Didienne. The crowned jewel of Dragon's Cove. The center of art and music, where intelligence and clearness of mind are the norm... and they're having a parade. Týphon could hardly hold back his disgust as he forced fake smiles at the people around him, who were either cheering the arrival of the Guardian Dragons or for the magnificent floats that glided down the wide streets of the city. Were these people really unaware of the war that was going on around them!? When he tried to speak to a few random people in the crowd, inquiring as to the purpous of this parade, not one of them made answers that matched the others. On top of the ignorance of the raids that are currently going on, they don't even know what they're celebrating? It's amazing what the Council could achieve on such short notice.

Týphon, Feronia and Silverwing had landed in the square roughly an hour ago, all three bearing the bad news of war, and sent word immediately for the Council to come and discuss the war with them. A parade was not what they had expected to greet them. But they could at least tolerate the frivolity, Týphon torrn between staring daggers into the floats and marchers and showing a begrudging respect of the ingenuity of their design. One float in particular caught his eyes, statues with the likeness of the five guardian dragons, himself included, standing in a circle with heads held high, magic being used to make the pseudo-dragons seem alive and breathing, the chests heaving with breath and the heads occasionally dipping down to nod at the crowd. If anything else, they should be able to get a number of competent mages, if they weren't too afraid of battle to arm themselves for the fight.

But finally the yellow guardian lost his patience, and he stomped his foot heavily, but the action went mostly unnoticed. He turned to Feronia and shook his head, trying in vain to express his displeasure. "How could they all be so unaware, sister?" He asked, trying to keep his voice as low as possible. Though he wished dearly to shout out the horrors that were going on, respect for the Council’s authority made him bite his tongue. "Surely there has been some news of this atrocity that has made it this far."

Well, color her impressed. She was aware that the magicians of Dragons Cove were top notch and superb, but this was just over the top. Of course, the fast mobilization of all the artisans in the city to put together a parade like this brought a question to her mind: if they could be this organized for such a frivolous function, then why couldn't they mobilize when their country was being attacked? It set her blood to boiling, but she did it quietly. Unlike Typhon, however, she didn't bother pretending to be pleased by this all. She simply held her head high and surveyed the goings on below cooly. When greeted she would dip her head regally and leave it at that, in no mood to fake a smile.

When Typhon spoke, Feronia leaned her head to listen, but didn't look directly at him, still observing the crowd. "This whole charade is perhaps one of the most impressive things that I've ever seen. From the way that they're carrying on in such a manner, I would think that they have heard nothing of the war that brews in the south." Just then, mage fire exploded overhead, painting the noon sky in a dazzling array of colors as the fireworks burst and formed various shapes in the sky, mostly dragons the flew away from the point of impact. Some of them dipped low over the crowd, bringing up cheers and clapping. Somewhere in the back a song had started, the lyrics and rhythm not quite recognizable yet, but was growing in loudness rapidly. "I should like to see the Council after this little display and thoroughly question their judgement." She mumbled to herself, though definitely loud enough for the others to hear her.

An hour. They had been here an hour already and things weren’t showing any signs of moving along anytime soon. People had been prancing around like they had just won a war, never mind one had just broken out not too far away. Did they even know the Everbridge was in shambles and an even greater army was growing stronger by the minute? And what were they doing? They were standing around looking pretty while people buzzed around them like bees in a daffodil field. Silverwing wasn’t one for being impatient, but after what had happened in the last few weeks, he couldn’t risk taking things lightly anymore. No one could.
But he was tolerating it all nonetheless. Even though he had half a mind to question everyone as to why they were being so ignorant. Okay, he had to admit it was a breath of fresh air to see so many people in one place so happy. It might even be the last time they are in such a wonderful atmosphere. But right now, he just wasn’t feeling it. Not at all.

He curled his long tail around his body and flicked it impatiently. So far, he had avoided pretty much all eye-contact with the beings below him. He wasn’t happy and he wasn’t about to pretend he was.
As he stood there, he recalled moments from the battle, and how he had come close to death. In fact, his large, right wing was hiding that of a dreadful scar running a few metres across; much larger than any of the people here. He wanted to just unfold his wings and show them all, show them all that guardians weren’t indestructible, and that just because they were here didn’t mean they were safe. No one was safe. Maybe if they understood that guardians could fall just like the rest of them, then maybe they would realise that there was nothing to sing and dance about.
But still, he had to keep his cool.

And then the fireworks went off.
He lost it.
He spun his head round to face Feronia and Typhon, eyes practically blazing. “The Council better turn up soon before I make them turn up.”

Of all days to be lost for time! Farios was known for his impeccable manners and time keeping, but today of all days, delayed by council formality, he was late. However, there was a thrill in his blood. His standard position was as a "treasurer of sorts" for the High Council, a step below them, the twin ruling of the Guardian Dragons. Though today, Council Member Santreuse had to step down and so Farios was nominated for the honour of a stand in. His judgment today would be just as powerful as the other nine council members...well...
That was food for thought. Who of them would show their faces? Farios did not understand why this meeting was so dire, but apparently it was three-guardian-dragons dire. Or was it? Many of the council did not think it worth their time to appear before them.

He collected himself and steadily landed at the top of the grandiose steps to the Council Palace, overlooking the grand square, there amongst the swirl of admiring people, bedazzled to see the dragons of legend, were the Guardians themselves. Farios preened his feathers into place, he was far smaller than them and felt intimidated, they were clearly not here to mince words. Swallowing his uncertainty he took flight again and glided down toward them, with an air of gracefulness that only a true dragon of the upper-capital could muster.

"Hail Guardian Dragons!" He greeted, then landing to dip his head and forelegs respectfully to them. "My calling is Farios, and today, I stand before you as the voice for Council Member Santreuse; he wishes for you all to know he is bed ridden with sickness and regrettably, cannot speak with you today."
Farios hated lying, Council member Santreuse was likely counting his gold or arranging his silverware.

"What a fine honour it is to see you, welcome home." He kept a fully courteous manner, if only to help curb their palpable anger.

Theodonys de Grysebrume heard Farios’ words from the corridor and grinned. How predictable from Santreuse… The old man too was wondering who would dare to show up. He was late himself but had no intention of walking faster. He cast a glance towards his son, who was heavily leaning on his arm. Both men couldn’t look more different. In fact, it was nearly impossible to tell that they were related. While Theodonys was tall and strong, with fierce blue eyes set in a resolute face and flyaway white hair, his son was a frail creature. He was very thin, had straight black hair shot with white strands. His delicate features made him look almost like a ghost and his dark red eyes were just adding to the strange picture. Even though he was half his father’s age, it looked like he was weaker than the old Count.
It had indeed been a tiring day for Jeremy Erôn, who was showing obvious signs of exhaustion. He was even paler than usual and seemed to be more on the brink of collapse with every passing second.

“You should have stayed home and rest,” grumbled Theodonys. “This masquerade might turn ugly and you won’t be able to defend yourself.”
“How kind of you to believe that I usually can defend myself,” smiled Jeremy. “No Father, I couldn’t let you face them alone. I know you too well. You need me at your side, today more than ever.”

Both men reached the entrance of the Council Palace and walked out, taking sight of Farios standing majestically, before seeing the crowd gathered in the square, along with the three impressive guardian dragons. Theodonys and Jeremy Erôn had missed the parade and the fireworks on purpose, pretending that Jeremy was in no shape to attend, which was true, of course. Thus the perfect excuse…

“How could you caution something like this?” whispered the younger man.
His father grunted and kept silent.
“They will hate us, if they don’t do it already,” continued Jeremy, in his even and mellifluous tone.
“Well, Son, we shall soon know for sure, won’t we?”
“They don’t look very happy, Father. If they are indeed the messengers of a tragedy, I can only imagine the effect of the…”
“Enough!” shouted the Count, before he lowered his voice again. “We have welcomed them as… as heroes. Cheer them up, show confidence. Imagine the effect on the population if all they could hear was a funeral march?!”
Jeremy gently patted the old man’s arm:
“I know, Father, that is precisely why I didn’t vote against the decision. I just wanted to make sure that you would stick to your argument, should they question your decision…”

Theodonys sighed, thinking that he could only blame himself for having turned his beloved son into such a clever diplomat.

“But Sir, they are waiting for you,” the servant dared to offer, his eyes firmly on the ground while he kept his head bowed as low as it would go without his back giving way and making him topple over.
“I do not care.” Innace sighed loudly, desperately. “How many times do I have to tell you? I knew before this that you were stupid but are you deaf as well? The Guardians can go to hell for all I care!”
“Yes, Sir,” the servant whispered before backing away out of his master’s sleeping chambers.

It might already be well past midday but for Innace, it was still too early to properly start the day, especially after the late, quite rough and very exhausting night he had had. Plus, his day was fully scheduled for far more important things like counting his gold coins, etching more notches into his bedpost, and reminiscing over the fact that he might have finally gotten rid of the prince.

Ever since he had left Racksom – minutes after Atleon had specifically told him to send help after the prince to make sure everything was alright in Quinsilla – he had felt rather satisfied with himself. He had no idea what had happened to Atleon but he sincerely hoped he had been eaten by a vicious dragon or something. There were not many others anymore who could boss him around in the human area and as far as the Guardians were concerned, he really did not give a rat’s ass about them. What had they ever done for him? Not a single coin had they ever offered him for his loyal services on the council. Not a single fantastic meal as a thank you. Nor an exhausting and lovely nightly adventure as a reward. He had gotten nothing from them, thus they were nothing to him, and he sure as hell was not going to bend his ways merely to make an appearance at yet another boring meeting he was going to yawn his way through anyway. He might just as well stay in bed in that case.

Innace was just on the brink of falling back asleep after turning away from the area his rather annoying servant could reappear if he dared, when the fireworks suddenly started up and he cursed loudly as he grabbed his chest, his heart jumping up and down madly.

“That was Theodonys’ stupid idea, I’m sure,” he growled as he threw away the covers of his bed. Why had he even been sleeping with a cover? It was stupidly hot and the sweat was running down his rather large body in streams. “I will kill him for almost giving me a heart attack.” The threat would of course not be followed through. Not just yet at least. Theodonys still proved to be useful from time to time so Innace allowed him to stick around for a bit. Plus, someone had to take care of that pathetic son of his.

“Ramon!!” His voice boomed through his room and vibrating in the wooden door, making the servant hastily step into the room, merely seconds after the master had called. “Prepare me. I am woken up by this circus outside, I may as well get out of bed.”

“Does my master wish to go to the council meeting after all?” Ramon asked, carefully avoiding Innace’s eyes.
The latter glared at his servant, wondering why on earth he was still putting up with this loudmouthed and insolent brute. “Yes, I shall grace them with a short appearance.”

At Silverwing's outburst, Typhon turned to him and leaned in close, holding his gaze. "I understand you impatience, but now is not the time for violence, brother. Let us save our energy for the upcoming battles or, at the very least, the council meetings we will have to endure." In fact, they may need all the energy they have just to influence the council into taking some sort of action, heaven knows that... Farios?

What was this dragon doing here? Not to be rude to him, but they needed a bit more power than that. "Hail, Farios." Typhon said anyways , dipping his head in his direction, then turning to face him. Must at least retain a little bit of courtesy. "And a very warm welcome it is. Tell me, what is the meaning for this celebration? A holiday, birthday? Or perhaps" Typhon leaned in close and muttered low, so as not to alert the people. "... We have just won a war?"

"He nonchalantly pulled his head back and smiled, an ironic twist at the edges of his mouth showing more distaste than anything else. Sick in bed indeed. He knew very well that Councilman Santreuse was most likely squirreled away in his room, feeding his ever-present sloth and greed. Actually, Typhon was rather glad that that man didn't show up, he detested working in that man's presence. However, as the circumstances stood they probably needed him at the moment, a war like this required as much power as they could muster, and even the lowest snake had a bite to be reckoned with.

She almost grinned at Silverwing's outburst and did not seek to restrain him like Typhon did. She too was feeling that there would most likely be a great deal of death threats if this council meeting was going to be going the way that it had started. Greeted by a parade and no council members? Ridiculous. Upon leaving the Peak she had expected to meet resistance. She had not come to visit the Council herself in many a year, but talking with the last set of the Grand 10 had left her with something of a bitter taste in her mouth. She was prepared for a fight. In fact, she almost hoped that the Council members would be unruly and outright disrespectful. It would give her an excuse when the lower officials questioned the reason for biting off their heads.

Not that she actually would. Maybe.

Farios fluttering down was something of a surprise to her, however. Sick at home? Small children made that excuse, not fully grown government officials! Outwardly she simply grumbled, but inwardly she fiercely hoped that the man was deathly ill with the pox or the plague. That would only make her feel slightly better if it were the reality. "Don't be silly, Typhon. How could we have won a war? Obviously, Dragons Cove is at peace, just like it has been for centuries. Obviously, this celebration is because the Council is so pleased to have all three of us in the capitol that they simply could not help but throw a parade in our honor." Her voice was bordering dangerously between anger and sarcasm, but did not care. She was in no mood to play political games, even if Farios was just a scapegoat in this situation. "As lovely as our homecoming is, I am unfortunately in no mood for such levity. Please, let us continue in to the Grand Council Room. I will send someone to give my thanks to the organizing staff once our business is concluded." Maybe. If the staff hadn't fled after what they had to say.

*~*~*~*~*

For fifty years Kadland had worked in the Council. It had taken a lot of time to work his way into one of the ten seats, but he had done it. In those fifty years of servitude, never had he imagined that three Guardians would show up on their doorstep at the same time, demanding a Council session. The thought of those three legendary dragons in the halls of the capitol set him on edge, which was not at all good for his heart, but was a condition he couldn't prevent, unfortunately. What were they doing here? What did they want? Surely, the minor little squabbles in the South were not worth all this trouble. Perhaps they were angry about the Prince? Doubtful. The boy was a broken wreck anyway since losing his dragon. Atleon's disappearance was more of a boon than anything. It left the King's seat the much more vulnerable. Besides, were dragons really capable of understanding such complex things as what a disruption in the line of succession would mean for the Council? Probably not.

At the moment, Kadland was being taken to the Council Room, a frown on his face as the young lad behind him dutifully filled him in on events throughout the kingdom that might have been of value in the upcoming talks. At the age of seventy five, Kadland was showing all of his years from his bald head covered in liver spots to the neatly trimmed beard that was white as a cloud. His skin was loose and wrinkled with hooded eyes and a disappointed scowl that was very nearly his permanent expression. He was in a wheeled chair, an invention of his own devising that allowed him mobility even as his legs began to give up on supporting the long life that he was somehow holding onto. The chair itself reflected his station as council member, with metal wheels and intricate carvings of dragons and wizards and landscapes on every inch of the polished surface of the chair. The seat was padded with fine velvet and stuffed to make it a comfortable seat that he could stand to be in for the longest of meetings. He was almost to the Council Room when his attendant finally finished his account of events. Good. Time to meet the Guardians.

Perhaps others would disagree, but Skeloph Yeriss viewed her seat on the Council as mostly her own work. True, she had been boosted by her father’s ego- naming his child after himself even though she had been female seemed something of a case of self-advertising- but it had been her work which had put her in this chair.

Stroking one finger absently along the rich purple velvet which covered her seat, she gazed around the vast chamber. She was lounging on a horseshoe-shaped platform which circled the area designated for guardian dragons to stand when they came to visit. Like that was ever going to happen. They didn’t do a thing in Didienne- but that was how she liked it. More power to her, and power was the very thing she wanted. For a woman born without some sort of godly magic, the only way to glory was usually marrying some rich lord, but Skeloph had aspired higher, and now there were very few limits on what she could do. With a luxurious stretch she stood, smoothing down her elaborately styled chestnut hair and straightening her dress before gliding along the curve of the platform towards the window.

“Ma’am!” A small voice, full of relief, echoed across to her from the vast doors on the other side of the door. Whirling with a scowl of annoyance, Skeloph regarded the girl who stood there. One of her maids. The name escaped her, but she remembered that irritating little face.
“What do you want?” she snapped, causing the child to cringe and pale. All the same, she continued with delivering her message. Well, at least she was made of stronger stuff than some of the others.
“A message for you, my lady. Three of the guardian dragons await the attendance of the Council outside.”
“Whose idea was this? What an idiotic idea of a joke. You truly expect me to-“ A particularly loud spray of fireworks outside interrupted her, and she spun back around to face the window again, stalking over to it with her shoes clacking loudly on the floor. It was hardly possible to miss the three hulking shapes, scales glittering and heads turned together as they conversed. One of the dragons shifted, granting her a glimpse of Farios behind them. So Santreuse was shirking his duties again. What a surprise. Skeloph had to take a moment to compose herself, the blood drained from her face, before she was able to turn back to the maid and issue her commands.

“I need all my maids in my room at once. Why wasn’t I informed of this earlier?” She held up her skirts higher than was strictly ladylike as she whisked off the platform, half-running to the door. “Don’t just stand there, do something! You think we have time to waste?”
“My lady, we have been searching for you… The council meeting was not yet due to begin, I-“
“You think I want your excuses?” She stormed into the dressing chamber which they had reached and tugged insistently at a bell pull on the wall. The maid who was with her immediately began to pull open drawers of the large table, taking pastes and powders from them and applying them to Skeloph’s face. It was only a couple of minutes before her personal maid arrived, breathless from running to the room.
“My corset,” she ordered without moving her eyes from her reflection.

A minute or two later, the two women sedately moved through the corridors of the Council Palace, the maid a few paces behind her mistress and shadowing her movements. The two boys who had now stationed themselves at the doors to the council room began to heave them open as soon as they saw her, but her attention was diverted by the sounds of voices behind her. Kadland was being wheeled to the council room, the old geezer too weak to move himself anymore.
“Good afternoon to you,” she said politely to him, nodding before turning and continuing in to the chamber with her head held high and swelled with her sense of importance.

Silverwing flicked his tail away from Typhon as he muttered to him. Normally the golden guardian was the moody one, but today he had competition. He merely grunted to show he had acknowledged his reply. Just as the red guardian went to utter something as well, his attention was diverted to whatever the hell had just landed on top of the steps heading to the Council Palace.
Santreuse was sick? Was this a joke? The three of them had just flown however many miles from the Guardians Peak to get here bearing the word of war. Not to mention Silverwing himself had been a part of it but still, he had somehow managed to drag himself over to speak to them. And he was sick?
I hope that sorry ass is drawing his terminal breath.

Had it been any other day, he would have laughed at Typhon and Feronia’s blatantly sarcastic conversation in front of this new dragon, but today wasn’t a normal day. He narrowed his eyes at the beast but said nothing, waiting as patiently as he could and forcing himself to take a deep, but silent breath so as to not murder the next thing that moved.

Okay. He was calm.
“Tell me, where are the other council members?”
His tone didn’t come across likewise. His manners were slowly disintegrating.

Farios felt himself shrink away inside from the presence of the Guardians, or more specifically, their bubbling anger so barely contained.
"Yes...The fireworks! We must celebrate your return to Didienne. It is quite the event one worthy of celebration whatever the news...The people rejoice to see their Guardians." He smiled, offering them a look of pride. Unrequited.
"However...This is no place to talk about such things." He nodded respectfully to Silverwing, grasping for the welcome change of conversation. It would only last a few minutes. The true measure of his nerves was imminent, behind the colossal doors of the Council Meeting hall.
"This way please, Great Guardians."
Farios was a practical minded dragon and one that was well aware of the business in the day to day running of a Kingdom. He was not an easy one to intimidate but if it weren't for his innate social grace and respect, he might have shown himself to be weak on the outside as much as he was addled on the inside by the coarse and alarming greeting.
Those mentions of war, he could not tell. Were the dragons sharing humour amongst themselves?
War?
What was that? War belonged firmly in fiction and belonged to playwrights. Dragons Cove did not have these impossible problems.

Farios lead the way back up the steps. The palace was breathtaking and yet had never been changed but only been maintained. The meeting hall was the central and largest room in the palace; it had to accomodate the huge guardians and the council members. He made eye contact with Theodonys, to signal their appearance in the Meeting Hall was nigh. Why that sickly boy was still straggling along beside him at a time like this was beyond his comprehension.

The hall dominated the eyes utterly, though it was not fierce in appearance. The entire hall was marble, gold, silver and even dressed up with precious stones...Then adorned with fine sculptures of the guardian dragons, embedded into the marble walls as well as the original 10 council members of old. There were regal paintings placed all around the room, to the end of the line was the present family. Atleon was there.

The centerpieces though, those were the platforms. A horse-shoe arrangment of them for the Guardians to stand upon; each square and with only a slight rise given to their height, one human high.
Finally, there was an opposing horseshoe marble table that appeared to rise from the floor itself; an immovable structure. There, 10 elegant yet steadfast seats around it, also seemingly having risen up from the marble floor themselves, with softest silk placed over them for the most tender of rumps. And how fickle and soft they all were.

Farios took his place standing behind the third chair; he was much too large to sit in place of a human. But he would make sure to send out a good voice to the Guardians. It wasn't his own sensibility he feared though, it was what they had to say.
At least some other council members had decided to not embarrass them by actually showing up.
"Greetings, Skeloph, Kadland." He nodded curtly,

Every time he entered in council room he felt the same breathtaking emotion. The beauty of the place, its importance, its meaning... it seemed as if the atmosphere itself was calling for some major decision to be taken.

Theodonys smiled as he walked into the room, but when he saw that Yeriss was already there, he had to retain a sigh. Some people had a way to ruin his day with their presence... He still graced her with a polite nod, and gently escorted his son to their seats. As a senior member, he was sitting next to Kadland, another senior, a wise man who was clearly an asset to the assembly. Considering the tension he could feel coming from the guardians, it was good to know that a man like him was around. Just in case…

He looked at his son and a concerned shadow crossed his face. This was an important session. He needed Jeremy Erôn’s skills. Should the discussions turn into heated arguments, then he would speak and get people to listen to each other. He rarely debated himself; he simply had a way to bring a topic back on civilised tracks. They would listen to him. Unfortunately, he seemed completely absent-minded at the moment and the old man knew pretty well why. As they were walking towards the council room, Theodonys had caught a well-known shadow in the hall.
“Yes, she is here,” had whispered Jeremy with a smile and relief in his voice.
Of course she was. And they were probably engaged in some sort of telepathic dialogue, as they used to.

“Seriously, Jeremy, this is simply crazy! You’re a wreck. Why didn’t you rest a little more?”
The voice in his head was almost angry. Altea was not just his dragon. She was caring, supportive… and she always told the truth. Jeremy didn’t reply to the outburst. She was concerned, he could sense it.
“You know, one day, you’ll simply drop dead. You hear me? Dead. Couldn’t you have a little more consideration for me? What am I going to do once you’re gone?”
A smile blossomed on the albino’s lips and he finally sent her a thought.
“Can we postpone this little domestic until after the meeting? I need to know what the rumour says.”
Silence. And then:
“Words of terrible things happening. The guardians are very angry, Jeremy. You need to be very careful, and more important, you need to keep everyone from aggravating them. I’m worried about what they might say.”
Jeremy Erôn had an idea about what they were about to say. Or at least he hoped so. He felt a hand on his arm and realised he had closed his eyes. He turned and met his father’s glance.
“Son, you better focus now,” he whispered. “I have a very bad vibe. And considering this one is here as well…”
He pointed at Yeriss, leaving the words hanging in the air.

Innace was not at all pleased with the current turn of events, not in the least!
Ramon was anxiously observing his master pace his quarters from one side to the other and back again, all the way muttering profanities and ignoring Ramon, who was waiting for his cue to remind his master that it was really about time that he left. However, the servant was reluctant to say anything yet but time really was pressing and the meeting would soon start. He knew that his master did not care in the least, but one of the reasons why Innace had kept Ramon around for so long was the fact that the servant managed to keep him a little straight and managed to avoid his master missing too many important meetings or doing too many stupid things at once.

“Alright, alright!” Innace growled with an accusing glare at his servant. “I’m going!” With a respectful nod – more to hide his grin than really out of respect – Ramon opened the door to Innace’s quarters and the council member stepped out into the hall with a haughty air about him, striding away in a bored pace.

Not long after, he entered the council hall through a side door and immediately felt his mood drop even lower. Not only was the cause of his almost heart-attack present with his sorry excuse of a son, but Kadland had let himself be wheeled in. That this old man, covered with the ugliest liver spots Innace had ever seen, had still not fallen dead out of his wheelchair was ridiculous. One more nuisance he had to content himself with. And if those three had not been enough already, Skeloph, that powerhungry snake, had deemed her presence necessary as well. Farios was completely off his radar, the silly antler dragon was only good for one thing: decoration.

Shaking his head in frustration, Innace went to his usual chair and planted himself in it with an air of resolute arrogance. He may not be the youngest anymore, but he knew that he would outlive the others. One way or another. If anyone had any claim in this hall, it would be him. Sooner or later. He had his means.
It was only when he was firmly seated and playing his act when he noticed the Guardians. Now, that was an unexpected surprise. Not only had it been centuries since a Guardian dragon had last shown its face to the High Council but to top it all off, there were now three of them waiting for the meeting to start, with visible impatience.

“Three Guardians?” he grunted arrogantly, trying to hide his surprise. “What? Have they sent a huge committee now to try and make up for the years of hiding away in some hole or other?” Innace was not one for diplomatic speeches, he generally preferred to utter his thoughts the way they popped up, but maybe he should really rethink his strategy for today’s meeting. Of course, now the words were said and there was no taking them back anymore.

So Farios was skilled in the art of kissing up. An easy enough way to become at most, say, an aide, however he would have to grow his own spine before he would be able to climb any higher in the world of politics. The way he is now, Farios would most likely have no real opinion of his own, meaning shaking him from his original position would either be extremely easy, or impossibly hard. If only the true councilmen were as simple as that... Following Farios slowly, as to not accidentally tread on the little creature, Typhon slowly made his way into the palace, letting himself be led to the Council Hall.

Not that he needed to be led, in any case. Typhon could have found his way there completely blind, what with how many times he had gone there, all of the days spent in heated discussion for the betterment of the Cove. Funny, how all of those arguments seemed so petty now that there was a larger threat than crops or wild animals. Memories of these meetings and more rushed from the recesses of Typhon's mind as he walked into the Council Hall, seeing that all was still exactly how it had been, even from centuries ago. Ah, memories.

Moving to his favorite place in the arrangement of platforms, the center one, Typhon looked down at the human councilmen, assessing them for difficulty and personality. First off, there was Kadland; Typhon had an immense amount of respect for this man, he was extremely dedicated to his job, and one of the few to hold his position for as long as he has. His age and experience meant he knew the Cove better than all of the other councilmen, and thus would be most likely to know what to do in matters of defense. However, he could also be painfully stubborn, and he wasn't a good man to have as an enemy. Next was Skeloph, a proud woman with enough temerity to out-speak any person she comes across. She worked long and hard for her position, and thus she was one of the most powerful members of the council currently serving. She would be invaluable in rallying troops and funds, but should she oppose she would become a very tricky obstacle. Theodonys was a kind enough fellow, and the public seems to like him enough. Not much else could really be said about him, as Typhon had only met him a few times. And last, there was... Innace. Oh joy. Perhaps one of the more uselessly difficult councilmen, this man was just brimming with self-importance. His dreams of ruling the Cove were no big secret, and getting him to act would be no small feat. There were in for quite a day...

"Greetings, Councilmen." Typhon spoke, dipping his head gently in their direction. Maybe seeing himself being serious about this matter would make them think more on what the Guardians were about to say. Hopefully.

Kadland made some sort of noise of recognition when Skeloph shot a short greeting his way. That snake. Women had no place in seats of authority, especially not that one. But he was wiser than to let on about his prejudice agains the woman. As much authority he had as a senior member, there really wasn't anything he could do to keep Skeloph somewhere quiet and out of the way, so he did his best to tolerate her presence. Upon arriving in the massive council room the lad wheeling his chair handed him an elaborately carved ivory handled walking cane and Kadland got his old bones to his chair on the raised outer horseshoe. With his typically dour expression, he watched as Farios led in the Guardians, returning the nod of the white and green dragon and went to studying the three that came through the door. He'd seen plenty of the Guardians in his years as a councilor, but they still had an impact on him. The great dragons filled the room with their very presence, and it didn't take a genius to figure out that the three were perturbed. Whether it was the conversation to come that they were getting fussed over or Farios had managed to say the wrong thing he wasn't entirely certain. Perhaps a bit of both.

Looking around the room, Kadland was wary of just how empty the council seats were. Even if the Guardians were simply dragons, even he wasn't bold enough to turn down a direct request from them and simply not appear, much less when three made their appearance. The old councilor huffed to himself, his frown deepening. Disrespect, foolishness, idiocy? What had suddenly plagued the other council members? Not that he was particularly surprised, of course. If had been a long time since the Great Ten had officially met, and that was only because tradition dictated that they at least pretend to work together. All of the Councilors had their own things to do of course, but missing this meeting… He had no words for it. If half of the news from the south was true, then this meeting was going to be… interesting.

Once the Guardians had settled a bit, Kadland sat forward slightly in his chair, leaning his elbows against the polished marble and laced his fingers together, studying the three dragons before him with patience gained over fifty years of dealing with politics. "Greetings, Guardians." He replied to the yellow dragon on the center podium, his old voice carrying well in the large room. With one final look at the scant few of his fellows that had assembled in the council room he settled into business mode. "The message of your coming was… well, unexpected and a bit vague. Would you care to please enlighten us?"

Feronia stood next to Typhon when the yellow dragon took his place on the podium, observing the council as it sat before her. It took a bit of effort to not let on loudly just how disappointed she was with the turn out that they had received, but she managed. At Kodland's question, her jaws parted in a grimace, white teeth showing briefly. "The message that we have to give could not have been intrusted in the hands of a mere courier. As you all should be aware, the village of Quinsilla has been, for lack of a better word, completely ransacked." She stopped a moment to let the message sink in before taking a deep breath, looking at Silverwing. "The unfortunate news does not end there, however. Racksom has also been taken by the same army that took Quinsilla. Silverwing-" She brushed her wing gently against the blue guardian's "-witnessed the battle first hand."

Kadland hardly seemed pleased to see her. Well, the feeling was mutual; it didn’t bother Skeloph in the least. As she breezed past the old man struggling out of his chair, she permitted herself a small smile. There were some advantages she was always going to have over the seniors of the council. It was simply impossible to be imposing when you couldn’t even walk without the help of a stick. With a pleasantly neutral expression maintained, she skirted around the inside of the horseshoe until she reached her father’s old chair, near the centre of the platform. It was somewhat too big for her, built for the heavily muscled man where she had inherited her well-bred mother’s slimmer look. Yet even though it could dwarf and belittle her, she had been loath to have its frame altered at all. Instead she had had the padding in the cushions added to, which also served to make it more comfortable in the long and frequently dull meetings. Now she settled in a would-be casual positon, her legs crossed under her skirts and torso leant elegantly to one side as she leant on her elbow.

As Theodonys and his boy passed, Skeloph returned the nod. It was simply presumptuous, to her, for one family to hold two council seats at a time. They weren’t even separate branches, but simply father and son. Surely fairness dictated that one should wait for their parent to die before taking their seat? After a moment, she allowed another moment of small amusement. She may as well begin telling knock knock jokes as talk of fairness in the High Council.

She was careful to show no opinion of her fellow council members, but as she eyed them all in turn she noticed Theodonys gesture towards her. The younger one didn’t seem to be paying attention, his glazed look suggesting he had been indulging in some sort of drug before the meeting. Perhaps it was so, it would undoubtedly make some of them more bearable. Today, however, was a day to be vigilant. This was no minor dispute between citizens; Skeloph had no doubts over what this was about.

The entrance of Farios, tailed by the three glittering guardians, prompted her to her feet almost without thought. Despite the position she had elevated herself to, she was still very much a woman, and there were times when she needed to act as such- like meeting three guardians. Her skirts were of shot silk, plummy red and purple as her family colours, and she had donned the dress in a hurry in the snatched minutes before the meeting. The unusually extravagant cut made them difficult to manage, but hours of practice paid off as she swept an elaborate curtsey before dropping back to her seat. Typhon’s greeting irked her; it could hardly have been more obvious at that moment that there were more than just councilmen present. Sitting directly before the centrally-placed dragon, however, she couldn’t express any annoyance; instead she inclined her head gracefully before settling back to observe the others. Innace’s words made her wrinkle her nose slightly in distaste. Perhaps she didn’t care for the aims of the guardians herself, but it wasn’t the first time she’d seen one by far. They did do something, which was more than could be said for her fellow council members, if only a little more.

And in that moment, it was a pity that she could say it for Kadland too. She had to restrain herself from gritting her teeth as the worn-out mockery of an expired council member made an attempt to take charge. His voice was dry and cracked, his greeting at least as rude as it was polite. Did it really seem wise to him to insult how the guardians had been conveying information to the Council? True enough, if Skeloph did not have her own sources then she would be as clueless as a newborn, but that didn’t mean she wasn’t going to butter up the guardians as best she could. Who knew what a mess they’d manage to make of the war.

“I fear,” she continued smoothly, leaning forwards slightly and steepling her fingers as she let an artful crease of ‘anxiety’ appear on her brow. “That if the tidings we have been sent prove true, then whatever news and aid you can give to us in these troubled times will be vital and gratefully received. As, of course, is any visit from so many of you at once. We are honoured by your high regard for us.” Skeloph bowed her head gracefully in respect, brushing back a few loosely curled tendrils which hung around her face from her styled hair.

Greetings and passing looks of mild interest between all the members finally finished, Farios rather preferred to stay on the better side of the politics so he chose to ignore these, and so they began. Feronia then announced the news they carried with them.
The silence that followed seemed to echo far too long, nonplussed entirely.
Taking full advantage of the honour bestowed upon him to appear as a council stand in, Farios was first to speak.
"Guardian Feronia, I do not question your truth, but may I ask you of this army? There are no true armies on our Fair Land, we may learn the arts of fighting amongst the academy, there are those that form ranks to serve as law enforcers, but armies?" He seemed very perplexed by simply the thought of it, as if it wasn't a logical possibility in this world.

"Armies from where? Surely we must have been able to have caught sight of such a massing of numbers on our own good land." The thought that they may have been invaders, did not appear to cross Farios' mind. This world was all of the known world, and that was all that mattered. They were far away, safe from harm from the likes of strangers that would not even be able to find, let alone take, their island. It was known that there was perhaps a continent somewhere in the blue beyond, but, what relevance was it when one could not break from the island?

"I speak wholeheartedly when I say, this is strange news to me, and I now seek the attention of the Councillors whom I am sure will agree; we must find out more of this source."

There were times when Jeremy Erôn wondered about the whole purpose of the Council. Times like the present one. He had never really considered it an honour to be part of it – it was starting to become more like a burden, and yet he wouldn’t complain about it – and today was no exception. Never ending discussions were already painful, heated arguments were exhausting to hear, but plain stupidity was simply unbearable. Farios had just demonstrated his talent for silly speeches. Surprisingly enough, Jeremy had been pleased by Yeriss’ intervention. While Kadland had acted nothing more than his usual self – going straight to the point, as always – Skeloph had managed to smooth what could have been considered as rudeness coming from the old man. Of course, she was a master in manipulation, but she had managed to balance the talk and the young man gave her an appreciative glance. She was a clever woman and seemed decided to make good use of her intelligence during this meeting, or so he hoped. Alas, the same couldn’t be said about Farios. Quite on the contrary. Not only did he attempt to speak – again – for them all but he was clearly ready to aggravate the dragons’ mood by talking nonsense. Jeremy saw his father grin and realised that Theodonys was worried. Worse, the Count kept silent which was highly unusual and even disturbing. He was a passionate man, eager to share his point of view, clear and loud. Things were different today, because of the importance of the meeting. The albino took a deep breath and slowly stood. A furious voice in his head made him wince in pain:
“Don’t tell me you plan on addressing the Guardians? Do you really have a death wish?”

Altea was both infuriated and scared. Not the best combination to help him at the moment. Jeremy ignored the dragon’s angry thought and spoke in his quiet and usual peaceful tone:
“Those are indeed very disturbing news and I fully agree with councillor Skeloph. Your invaluable assistance is needed and it is clear to me that your very presence should convince us all about the truth of the tragedies you witnessed.”

A sudden wave of weakness washed through Jeremy’s body and he staggered even so slightly, trying to keep both his balance and his breath under control. When he managed to speak again, his voice was a little unsteady:
“Your testimony and warning should be our first concern and we should keep an open mind to everything you’re willing to share with us, be it a detailed account of what has happened or plans on how to deal with this threat. Only you can bring us to a full understanding of what is going on and we shouldn’t question what you say, but instead think of the consequences such revelations will bring to our people and ourselves.”

Exhausted by the effort, Jeremy Erôn sat back, grateful to his father who discreetly helped him. Altea’s voice reached the albino again, a soft whisper this time:
“Since when do you openly agree with Miss ‘I want to rule the Council’? Are you trying to get a date? You do of course realise that you have not the slightest chance of getting her attention, don’t you?”

The faintest of smiles blossomed on the young man’s lips. Altea was not only possessive, she could also be quite jealous on occasion…

Innace was sitting in his chair in the meeting hall and couldn’t help but be bored to no end. He barely managed to stifle a yawn as the respective pseudo important council members made their respective speeches in order to try and impress the Guardian dragons.
Those four-legged creatures did not seem to possess any major intelligence, unlike what has been proclaimed for many years. Then again, Innace had always been fairly certain that their greatness had been made up and blown completely out of proportion over the years. They were dragons after all.

However, once Farios began investigating on the provenance of the armies the dragons had mentioned, Innace decided that maybe for this particular meeting, he would do better to keep his generally rather forward – rarely nice – manner a little in check today. It would not do for the other council members to realise that he knew far more about this than he had let on until now, and he was intent on keeping it that way. Nobody in this room knew that he had been in Racksom when Quinsilla had been burnt to the ground, and nobody needed that piece of information anyways.

Thus, for the time being, Innace kept his peace and merely listened to the others with his typically mocking expression on the face, disregarding most of what the others said and considering them fools and cowards to regard the Guardians as such high beings.

While the celebrations were continuing throughout the streets of the capital, a small group of people were standing in front of the council hall and talking amongst them. None of them were convinced that a celebration was in order and all of them thought that the feasts were merely a distraction from something much larger at stake.
In their opinion, Dragon’s Cove was on the brink of something.
What this something was, they did not know, but they could imagine that the Guardian dragons would not simply show up, especially not in this mass and number, if there was not something important. And important in this case – that they were absolutely certain about – could not mean anything good.

“I say, we spread the word! Tell the people that the Guardians are bringing bad news! Tell the people that they have been fooled by our council members into believing that this was a joyous occasion! Tell them that something bad is brewing and that we need to act, that we need to do something about it! Tell them that we are not to be fooled by gifts and promises! Tell them that we have a right to know what is going on!”

No sooner said than done.
The speaker, a tall muscled man going by the nickname of The Butcher, was already rallying the other men in the group to spread the word. Didienne would soon be in uproar. If there was one thing The Butcher was good at, it was coercing people into doing what he wanted.
One way or another.
Though this way, he was sure, would not need much force or trickery.

(C2, Didienne) The Greatest 10; a Meeting with the High Council & Other Events (13th Board) Empty
PostSubject: Re: (C2, Didienne) The Greatest 10; a Meeting with the High Council & Other Events (13th Board)   (C2, Didienne) The Greatest 10; a Meeting with the High Council & Other Events (13th Board) Icon_minitimeWed Sep 26, 2012 12:01 am

It seemed as if the councilmen were still at odds with each other, but there was no surprise there. It had been a long time since the councilmen were close with each other, and over the years they've separated themselves more and more. From what he could tell, they didn't even keep in contact with each other all that much, preferring to one-up each other at every chance they got. That is, when they weren't too busy serving their own purposes. He knew full well Farios was hardly the first choice he would make for a councilman, and Innace was too self centered to care about anything but himself. He doubted that Innace would even care about the invasion, as long as he had a secret hole where he could slither off to to protect himself (which he most like did, Typhon was sure). The rest, well... if it wasn't to protect the land, then at the very least they would at least help to protect their lofty positions.

"I do admit we could have a bit more forward in our summons, Kadland." Typhon admitted. "However, I would think you all would at least have an idea of what was happening, as it is your duty to keep yourselves informed. We are not carrier pigeons." Not the most polite thing to say, bet there you go. He knew that they all had lines reaching out, it was their job to get whatever information they could. "Though I'm not as much as an expert on our enemy as some of me brethren are, I do know some of the basics. These intruders are called "Surahnians', and seem to have sailed from a far-off continent to here. It is unknown, however, if they purposefully sought this place out. It also seems that they are attracting supporters from our own lands. I believe they are making their way here, to the capital, growing in number using our own people for a hostile take-over."

But, of course, Farios made a point. There was no such thing as an 'army' of Dragon's cove, as there has never been a need for one. Small militias were the largest groups that DC had, and bringing them together would be no small task. And even then, that would only be a small number of average soldiers, the more skilled fighters tending to become mercenaries or the like. Oh well, at least they were taking this seriously, and even the little dragon was including himself rather well. But of course, the odd duckling Innace was scowling at everyone, as if he were nothing but a teen. How such a pitiful man could become anything more than a town drunk was beyond Typhon's imagination, but that's politics for you.

The Butcher's words were not lost on the crowd gathered around him; Many of the group sprang into action, telling people they knew, while the more courageous were running up to people in the streets, shouting their thoughts to the celebrating crowd. The music, which had been loud enough to combat the feverent cheering, slowly went into a shaky silence, as they were brought to a halt by the rabble that only grew in number. Soon the loud cheering became loud in a different sort of way, a confused, nervous sort of way. People were shouting at each other, as others gathered up their families, a tension quickly spreading through them. What was this? Bad news? How could anything be happening in Dragon's Cove? Weren't the Guardians there to prevent anything like this? It wouldn't be long before The Butcher could take center stage, and most, if not all, eyes would be on him.

This was flabbergasting, nobody had ever just sailed over to Dragons' Cove before, he found the idea hard to grasp in his head. Surahnians were they called? They sounded strange already and he wondered all ready what they could possibly want from here. Perhaps if they just gave them what they wanted they would leave...better than to lose countless lives more. A thought that didn't quite frame up in his mind, it was too surreal feeling. He hadn't even seen their faces.
It was clear to him nobody on the High Council respected him enough yet to speak for an absent Councillor, and he silently begrudged that...Farios genuinely wished to perform to his best for the sake of the noble DDC, but others seemed to think too lowly of him even at his high rank as the Council treasurer.
"Before they come to the capital then; what is it they want? Have we not already on some small scale tried to speak with them in an open and diplomatic way? I for one would be in favour of that, maybe we can give them as they need and let them sail on back to their lands." It didn't seem to strike Farios that they were moving in more permanently, or that Dragons' Cove could ever be "conquered".

Valx was captivated by the man's words. That man was a character all right; nobody doubted his honesty and with good reason. Whenever there was something to be known, "The Butcher" always knew it and would happily share it, he was something of a local hero you could say. Valx found himself amid a cluster of people slowly building in number before the enthused Butcher, the man had a talent for public speaking and was hard to ignore, but what he said was even more enthralling. A story that had not been heard anywhere before in Dragons' Cove, this was no mere injustice of the Capital or talk of Kaionar pressing on the councillors, but far larger...a more ambitious story. There he was now, on a platform of sorts; a stall, but making the most of every minute of it.

As people scurried about, spreading his message from the at first small group of his own through their circles, others were now raising arms and Valx was among them; chanting that man's alias between snippets of his speech
Butcher! Butcher!
What he said to some was threatening, and to others, exciting.
Valx was young; eighteen years old and filled with that very same sensation. He piped up, hands around his mouth as he shouted above the swelling of noise.
"Do they lie to us? What is the bad news Butcher?" He shouted, met with a rise of likeminded noise from others around him.

All was happening according to plan and the Butcher was quite pleased to see that more and more people turned towards him, listening to what he had to say.
Before he knew it, he was already standing on a makeshift podium with a small, but growing audience hanging by his lips.

Raising his hands to quieten down the chanting and the shouts for him to reveal the truth to them, the Butcher cleared his throat, meeting as many eyes in the crowd as possible before he started recounting his tale.

“As you know, my friends, trade isn’t always easy. And to top it all off, we constantly have council members breathing down our neck. They do help us, I mean just look at the plentiful gifts today! Food and drink in abundance, more than some of us could ever dream of!”
The Butcher paused briefly for effect before continuing.
“However! These gifts are tainted by guilt! Guilt for having taken from us one of the best trading possibilities we could have ever dreamed of! There are people not from this island and they offered to trade with us!”

Once again, he paused a little to await reactions as this would not go by unnoticed by quite a few of the people listening to him by now. Most of them were traders of some sort and they all knew how hard it was to haggle sometimes, especially if Kaionarians had their fingers in the pot.

“But what did the council members do? They sent them away! They chased them from here and told them to get lost. They even burned their merchandise! So these men are now asking for compensation! And who is going to have to pay for that? We will! So I say, my friends, let’s fight against this injustice, fight against the bad news the Guardians are now bringing of how much we are going to have to replace to rebuild their trade and materials, when it is the Council’s fault that we are even in this mess! The Council members are bribing us with this feast so we will not take it badly when they are going to tell us after their meeting how much we are going to suffer from their mistake!”
Taking a deep breath, satisfied with his speech, the Butcher shouted, raising his arm with vigour: “Tell the Guardians what the Council is really like! Fight for your rights as free traders! Make it known to everyone that the High Council are traitors to their own nation! Don’t let them take your freedom!”

Valx was immediately taken by this.
The bastards! The High Council are just as we know it! He thought, the injustice of it all was setting alight the crowd to a higher loudness once The Butcher had spoken his part. To think we must be forced to pay for their mistakes. Apparently the high council had already regretted antagonising the foreigners and was going to make the people work to reconstruct what they had ordered to be burned of the foreigners merchandise. Terrible! Just as everybody knew of them anyway!
They could not let the Guardians go unaware of the High Council's dabbling!

"Butcher Butcher!" They all called again, Valx adding his voice to the growing plethora of others. By now he had rallied a good part of that carnival away, many were joining him, others were looking more cautious. Though, Valx had no doubt in his mind of this man's truths. The foreigners were a big enough of a surprise, but for the council to then order them to be harmed...
"Truth to the Guardians! Truth to the Guardians!" Became the new song of the moment.

What a ruckus that lot were causing, it was not celebratory sounding at all and the parade had been wonderful and musical...So what was this fuss? Looking across the square, Madeline was growing intrigued by the swath of people drawn to a mere rowdy man on a stall, dangling by his every word. Curiosity was probably just as much the reason for their interest as his gusto, maybe she would have to see for herself.
Madeline did not know of this man; she was visiting the capital from her time as a well respected teacher in magic of the Northern Academy. She also was quite skeptical, the message had been spreading around quickly of the High Council doing this and that as per usual, why was this so exceptional?
Coming forward she made direct eye contact with him with her small and hardened eyes, scouring his face to determine his motives...
"You, who are you to know these things if we do not!" She shouted above the crowd, her voice sounding like a command more than a question. She fixed her wild ginger hair after she had spoken, standing firm and waiting for a direct answer to her and expecting nothing less. Even in a bun her wiry hair sprung from the tight coils, much like how her voice carried from her lips.

Reveling in the chanting and the fact that people had picked up on his speech so easily, the Butcher remained on the stall, looking over the crowd, but strictly keeping the smug expression off of his face. There would be time enough for that later on or some other day. For now, all that mattered were well-spoken words and above all, actions!

When suddenly a female voice pierced the chanting to address him, question him even, the Butcher searched for the owner until his eyes finally settled on the face of a woman who’s eyes were literally boring into him. Ignoring the fact that any wrong word might be dangerous at this junction, the Butcher replied calmly, aware of quite a few eyes bouncing back and forth between the two of them.

“My dear Lady, I trade with people all over this island, and I have now heard this from more than one person travelling all over Dragons Cove. I would not say these things if I doubted there was truth in these sayings. I do not believe in rumours created to harm others but this is concerning us, the people! And when have we ever been able to really count on the Council to do anything honourable or profitable for the people? Have we not always had to take matters into our own hands? I say, we do this again now! Fight for our own rights! And even if there is a possibility that maybe not everything these respectable traders have told me reflects the truth, do we not owe it to ourselves, to our community, to then at least hear what the Council and the Guardians have to say to this? But answer me this: would they do this of their own accord? Would they tell us of their own free will what we should be informed about if we did not force them to tell us?”

For the first time since he had spoken up today, the Butcher was not quite certain his words would be received the way he intended them to, but he was nevertheless convinced that people would still understand that he was fighting for them, for their rights. For the freedom of the people and the trade!
