Perhaps he should have been more trusting in the flammability of oil, but when the flames closed up the ring around them he still let out a terse breath of relief.
“We should stay as still as possible,” he murmured, taking Kassandra’s hands and hastily dropping to the ground. As she edged closer to him, he fastened his arms securely about her, loath to let go even though it would likely make no difference as the monster bore down on them.

Ten seconds away now… Perhaps five now… no more than 3…

But just as it seemed it would rush straight through them, its mass parted around the ring of fire, seeming to simply absorb the flames. For a few moments they could only see in dim tones of greenish blue, the light filtered through what looked more like incredibly dense water spray than anything else up close. However, as the creature moved on past them and Armeno began to think they might have got off, it drew to a gradual halt and reformed into its original shape, its bulk still churning sickeningly. The two whirlpool-eyes appeared once more, looking almost doleful as the monster peered down over them, bent almost double to get a closer look from its huge height.

For a few seconds, Armeno simply stared at it through slitted eyes, willing it not to notice them. Without any visible signs, however, a deep noise began to eminate from the beast. It was indescribable; somewhere between a roar, a moan, a bubbling gurgle. Whatever it was, it evoked a nigh-on irresistible urge to flee the beast. Somehow, that didn’t seem like a plausible plan. Their flames might be extinguished now, but perhaps the ring where they had burnt would still give some protection. Locking his muscles stiffly, he kept a tight grip on Kassandra, praying that she wouldn’t make a break for it. She was hardly cowardly or stupid, but somehow he didn’t think this noise was just that.

As they were covered by the greeny blue light of the monster… demon… thing, and the flames surrounding the pair of them, Kassandra was sorely tempted to put up a shield of her own, but as Armeno had said before, better to not draw too much attention to themselves. The fact that all their frantic hard work with the fish oil had disappeared in such a short flash was worrying though, and she couldn’t help but think that it wasn’t quite right.

It seemed her trepidation did actually have a grounding as the monster slowly came to a halt above them, its swirling eyes completely alien, and to her, angry. They certainly didn’t look happy, or accepting of them. Backed up by the sudden growling roar it gave, this assumption was definitely backed up. Kassandra shuddered at the noise, slowly shifting her head across to look up at it. The thought to try and make a run for it did cross her mind, but they had seen how easily it had crossed the water, and quickly too, and she knew such an act would be of only stupidity. And, she was not going to run from some monster. Especially not in front of Armeno.

When it seemed to bend closer over them, Kassandra couldn’t bear it any more, and she flicked up a shield over the pair of them, green shimmering in a wide arc and fitting inside the edges of the previous fire-line. Thankfully it required little more than the twist of her hand to put it up, then there was that comforting feeling of having a thick wall of near unbreakable electricity between her, Armeno, and whatever monster this was.

Well, it was normally unbreakable. Nothing was stupid enough to electrocute themselves so thoroughly that they’d break through.

As he lay in the shadow of the monster, arms rigid around Kassandra, Armeno could scarcely bring himself to breathe for concern of attracting the thing’s suspicions. Not that they hadn’t already done that, unfortunately. Whatever it was it seemed indecisive, its form swaying from side to side, sinuous despite its bulk. After a few seconds it seemed to loom ever closer and scrutinise them from no more than a metre away, before slowly straightening again.

The elf began to breathe a sigh of relief as the creature’s searching eyes drew away from them- and then the shield of electricity flickered over his head, turning his view of the world into hazy shadows through a bright green screen. For a few moments he felt deeply reassured at an extra layer of protection, safe enough to shift and drop a light kiss on Kassandra’s lips.

Then his green vision became darker, what light reached them from outside obscured as their tormentor bent over them once more. A string of elvish curses rolled from Armeno’s lips as he tensed, no idea of what he could do to help them. What happened, he couldn’t say; but Kassandra’s shield seemed to dissipate without force, as if siphoned from the air. Swords and knives weren’t going to do a thing here, he knew; the time to protect themselves was past. All they could do now was hope that luck would pay out for them.

Armeno had always thought he would look his death in the face when it came for him. But in the end, death wasn’t the face he wanted to see, whether or not it had chosen this moment to take him. As Kassandra’s shield vanished completely, all her energy used in sustaining it, the sea demon moved on over them, leeching all the energy it could find as it passed. Perhaps he should have cared more about what was going to happen to them, but as the world faded around him Armeno found that he was content enough just to be close to the one he loved.
