| Smiling tiredly, Soneya agreed. “Sucks indeed.”
And of course then it all had to start sucking even worse when the shadow of not just one but three lawkeepers fell over the prone couple. Bracing for the inevitable drilling, Soneya closed her eyes and just tried to pretend they weren’t there.
Unfortunately, such a tactic did not work. At all. Ignoring the fact that both Lutis and Soneya looked exhausted and battered, their leader instantly started laying into them: “What the dragon are you doing here again? Isn’t it enough that you break out of a jail cell and wreak havoc across a whole town? That you brought murder to our doorsteps once? Nooo! You had to go out and bring wild dragons back here and kill our prime witness!!”
Turning towards his henchmen, he indicated the two on the ground. “You know where to bring them.”
At that, Soneya’s eyes snapped open. Oh heck no, they weren’t going to be thrown in jail yet again, were they?! And what was all this talk about killing their prime witness? That man was a bastard and a murderer!
“He wasn’t a witness,” she whispered savagely. “He was a cold-blooded murderer and tried to kill the Ebony Hunter we encountered. All the Volcano Longhorn did was avenge the pain he had caused his friend. Maybe the ...” Her voice gave out and Soneya had to content herself with staring angrily at the lawkeepers, who didn’t look the least bit intimidated by her stare. Instead, one of them picked her up and began carrying her away, Lutis suffering a similar fate.
Upside down in a fireman’s carry on the lawkeeper’s shoulder, Soneya felt every jarring movement of the man but luckily, she couldn’t feel much worse than she already did.
Before the lawkeepers could bring the two toward the jail however, some of the townspeople spoke up.

| "You know what?" Lutis' words were mostly directed at Soneya, ignoring the drivel coming out of the lawkeeper's mouth. "I think I'm just gon lay here a while. Paving slabs haven't never felt so good." He reeked, was pretty sure the warm patch under one shoulder was horse dung, felt like he'd been kicked in the head and wasn't sure if he wanted to eat his way through a bakery or throw up instead, but was quite content to stay put. He certainly didn't have any time for lawkeepers. Lutis barely registered what the man said, his mind elsewhere as his fingers idly traced down the back of Soneya's hand. Soft. How had she managed that through all this shit?
"Hey!" It was an entirely feeble complaint, but even the thought of mustering energy to complain properly was exhausting. Soneya did a little better, but now Lutis had laid down- been laid out flat- the past few days had all decided to catch up at once. When had he last stopped? It felt like aeons ago. His fingers tried to grip Soneya as she was pulled up and away, but even that felt like an effort. Why couldn't they just be left alone already?! He hung like a limp ragdoll between two lawkeepers, too heavy and tall to be hefted over one shoulder like Soneya. His feet slipped on the cobbles as he tried to keep himself from just being dragged, but he couldn't keep up. At least the mage couldn't hassle them from inside a dragon's stomach, and maybe he'd get a bit of peace inside a cell. Just a little time to sleep. That was all he wanted. Even now there was kerfuffle, then a clear voice cutting through the noise. "Methinks there's been 'nough justice done t'these two." Too right, he could agree with that. Lutis found his feet as the lawkeepers stopped, somewhat grateful that they still propped him upright. Not for long though, as a couple of villagers yelled their support, the lawkeepers overruled by the higher authority of an Elite and the masses. He swayed as he was left to fend for himself, not entirely sure what was going on now. He definitely knew that Elite though, all too well. "Soneyaaaa..." "Anyone offerin' these innocents shelter?"

| The urge to throw up was growing stronger by the second and Soneya had to concentrate really hard on not barfing up on the man’s clothes. It would certainly not endear her any further to the lawkeepers who already seemed to hate her and Lutis.
It took a long while for her head to clear enough that she registered angry voices speaking and it was only when the bumpy movement stopped that she understood what was being said, the words slowly trickling into her brain and making some sort of sense. There was a low rumble like the warning growl of a dragon but the mage couldn’t be sure she had heard right. It might as well have been her empty stomach. She desperately needed some water, and some food. And a shower.
Lifting her head a little, she saw Lutis being dragged like a potato sack and it stirred her anger into action again. She wanted to kick at the man holding her, but the arm he had tightened around her legs felt like a vice. All of a sudden, the grip loosened and Soneya felt herself being lowered to the floor. Not all too gently, mind, and when her feet hit the ground, the man instantly let go and stepped away from her, leaving her to sway on her feet. She rushed to Lutis’ side though it seemed to take her ages to cover the few steps separating them.
Vaguely she realised that she was resisting helping hands and that she was glaring at hands who were trying to help Lutis. Luckily the Elite –she had a nagging feeling that maybe she should know who it was – stepped in and took complete charge of the situation. The law enforcers were dismissed and some very helpful and nice people offered to provide the two poor souls with beds and food. But it all remained a complete blur in her head.
~~~~~~~~~~~~ When Soneya opened her eyes, she didn’t know where she was. She felt comfortable and warm but the ceiling above her head was completely unfamiliar as were the scents surrounding her. When she slowly sat up in bed, she let her eyes roam around the room and decided that she definitely did not know this place, but she did feel a lot better. Her head had stopped spinning and she felt a little revitalised. She couldn't remember showering before going to bed but she looked clean and she had on clean clothes – that were not hers.
As she flipped back the covers and just as she put her feet onto the floor, the door to the room opened ever so slowly and a blond head peeked in. “Oh, you’re awake!” the young girl squeaked and with a quick “I’ll let mum know”, the head disappeared again and the door fell into its lock.
Soneya frowned but then decided that the girl was probably not used to strangers and was a little cautious. Either way, there had been nothing scary or threatening, so the mage assumed that she wasn’t going to be thrown in jail in the next five minutes. She discovered the clothes she had last worn on a chair on the other side of the bed and she smiled broadly when she realised they had been washed. Oh, bliss!
Once dressed, Soneya exited the bedroom and followed the smell of freshly baked bread down the stairs and into a huge kitchen.
| Everything was so much of a blur, Lutis wasn't really sure how things panned out in the end. There were too many new faces and voices for his parched brain. Perhaps eventually he would put together the mixture of memories, but it didn't seem too important to take in what was going on at the time.
Everything refocused into a pleasanter view, where there was a blanket of soft round his head, rather than a fog of fatigue. It was happily he felt himself enclosed in sheets and out of danger, but he couldn't help his sudden start into proper consciousness after a moment or two- the past, however long it had actually been (probably barely a week), had been too dangerous to have anything close to normal sleep, and he was wired for more action. But her was pleasantly surprised by a lack of adventure. Just the patter of feet on stairs, and a chicken clucking somewhere off in the background. It was a little surreal, but Lutis wasn't going to complain about that. He stretched out and tried to remember the last day, what had brought him here to this point.
==X==
The small child that ran squeaking across the courtyard outside didn't make much sense, but she caught the attention of the dragon eyeing up the chickens, little tasty morsels they were. The child hadn't reacted like that to anything other than her- interesting new things to talk at- so the dragon assumed that something, somebody, new had appeared in the realms of where she had come from. Bidding the chickens goodbye, and a promise to return at a later time, she padded her way towards the kitchen to investigate. "Well 'ellooo!" Certainly the woman was looking a lot brighter than before, and cleaner too. A little fragile round the edges perhaps, although that was rather understandible, all things considered. The dragon pattered towards the table, claws clicking against the rough stone floor as she eyed up this now-conscious woman. She would be somewhat more unassuming if her clothes weren't quite so vibrant. "Howsit? Y'been out for a while. Not that it ain't been dull 'round here. Ooh, all sorts a'comin's 'n gaarns. There's half t'town lawkeepers been harkin' at t'door f'you both." It was a miracle none were waiting for Soneya on waking, the frequency of visits there had been. Not that any had been allowed inside to disturb the poor miscreants, but tensions hadn't eased any with time and silence.
| The woman of the house, a slim figure of energy and heart called Greta, bustled around the kitchen and warmly told Soneya to sit and that food would be on the table in just a moment. Greta had her hair up in a bun, but wild strands were peeking out here and there, some having come loose altogether. Within a few moments, she had heaped food for two onto a plate and set the still hot food in front of Soneya, accompanied by a glass of fresh milk and a pot of tea.
“Thank you,” the mage said, suddenly feeling shy and very inadequate. This woman didn’t know her at all, yet she was friendly and kind. “It’s nothing, dear. Now, eat up before it gets cold.” And Soneya did as she was bid. The food tasted delicious and she wolfed down a good portion of it, realising just how hungry she was.
“Excuse me, Greta? Where is Lutis?” she finally asked, having waited long enough for the man himself to make an appearance. Before Greta could reply, a dragon suddenly waltzed into the kitchen as if it were the most normal thing to do. Soneya couldn’t remember ever having seen the dragon before but the voice rang a bell. This must have been the Elite who had spoken up for her and Lutis.
“Lawkeepers? Really?” Soneya groaned, putting her fork back on the plate without having eaten the mouthful positioned on it. “Can they not just leave us in peace?” Exhaustion made a reappearance, and Soneya wanted nothing more than to go back upstairs and crawl back under those extremely comfortable covers.
“We had nothing to do with that dragon’s death.”
| "Mmhmm." The dragon nodded quickly, oblivious to the concern on Soneya's face. "Like every hour o' every day. In t'end I had to order 'em all away." She huffed laughter through her teeth, head fans trembling. Silly meddling humans, thought they could sort everything out by just questioning conked out victims. That didn't work at all.
She batted a wing in disagreement as Soneya continued, waving away those worries. "Oh no, they've given up on tha' one. Already know he did it, really. Did y'know that Lawkeepers are much happier t'blame a dead guy than a livin' scary one?" At least, that applied in this town. It was a rather concerning failing. Who was to say they wouldn't do it again and let another murderer go free? "'Cos then he cannae do anything t'them now, hear? Anywhos, them Lawkeepers were tryin' t'get you fer that mage's death. But I talked it through with them other dragons an' they cleared it all up good an' proper. Y'both all good t'gar." The dragon bared her teeth like she had seen humans do when they were pleased with something, although it came off a little feral. Soneya was still looking a little grey around the edges, more so than when the dragon had initially come in, and finally it twigged that perhaps this was a little too much in too little time. Oops. She took a step or two back, watching the woman for some sort of response, then retreated back to where she had come from. Probably better to terrorise the chickens again, rather than this fragile looking woman.
| Soneya was anxiously waiting to hear where Lutis was but it seemed as though Greta had momentarily absented herself from the kitchen without Soneya even realising it. Besides, the dragon was talking like a waterfall. But, it was good news. The more the lash dragon explained to her, the more relief Soneya felt until she could almost feel the corners of her lips tug upwards in a smile. Almost. A nagging sense of worry still prevailed but at least it seemed as though they had the lawkeepers off their backs. For the time being anyway.
“Thank you. Thank you so much! For everything you have done.” Soneya indeed was very grateful for what the dragon had done, though she eyed it a little wearily when it suddenly bared her teeth at her. The mage still wasn’t quite sure who exactly the dragon was but she seemed to carry quite a bit of influence. That was when the puzzle pieces in Soneya’s mind finally pieced themselves together and she realised that she wasn’t just talking to any other dragon but to an Elite. For a moment, her brain stopped all activity and her mind went completely blank.
Yet before she could say anything else or actually come to terms with what she had just realised, the lash dragon had already sauntered back outside to play with the chickens.
“She’s quite something, eh?” Greta asked with an amused lilt to her voice. “Often underestimated because she’s easily excited but she’s very good at what she does.”
Soneya merely nodded in response, still a little awestruck. She had just spoken to an elite. She. The woman who had been taught to hate dragons. And not only had she talked to an elite but, now that she actually thought about the whole adventure, she had done everything she could to stop an evil person from killing dragons, which she was supposed to consider a good idea, if she went by certain rules she had thrown out the window a while ago.
| Stretching turned out not to be a good idea, as Lutis felt his body squeal in discomfort. He groaned and slowly maneuvered himself upright. Eventually he'd have to find out what was waiting in store outside of this soft haven... and there was no point in putting it off. Might as well get it all over and done with, now he was awake. He dragged a shirt over his head, gently probing at the dark bruises on his side and wincing. Gentle noises from downstairs directed him the correct way to the kitchen, taking the staircase slowly. It seemed like it took an age before he got to the open, airy room. What a homely place, after days of wreck and ruin. Relief crept its way onto his face as he saw Soneya sitting comfortably in the middle of the room, too, looking a little worse for wear, but still in one piece.
"I think I'm broken," he croaked, shuffling over to the table to find himself a seat. "People aren't supposed to look like a sunset."
| “Sounds like someone is up,” Greta said with a smile in her voice as she went back to bustling around the kitchen like a whirlwind and preparing yet another wonderfully arranged plate with a pile of eggs and bacon, freshly baked bread and whatever other delicacies it was she put on there. Soneya wasn’t even sure she could name all the items on her plate. Not that it matter. Breakfast tasted divine and that was all she needed to know.
When Lutis emerged in the kitchen after his painfully slow descent of the stairs, Soneya gave him a tentative smile. What terms were they on? Friends? Enemies? Something in between? Something else? Lately they had come to appreciate each other somewhat but that had been in times of danger and all around extreme situations. Now that all of that had passed, they might just as well have reverted back to square one of not quite hating each other but definitely not liking each other.
At his words though, she grinned, but tried to hide it behind a cup of tea. “Well, you do look a little like death warmed over,” she admitted, figuring they'd be okay. “But don’t worry, I feel like it, so you aren’t alone in feeling like dragon dung.”
| Lutis slowly released a long breath, settling back into his chair. Days of running and now even the smallest exertions had him panting for air. There wouldn't be much more resistance from him for sure, as he just wasn't up for it any more. Soneya was looking a little better, although it also looked like she had been treated to quite the impressive breakfast, the size of the empty plate on the table. His face lit up when a similar sized plate suddenly winged its way on to the table in front of him. "Well, a little bit of me's a bit glad you're not feelin' too hot either." Lutis breathed in a long whiff of breakfast before picking up cutlery to dig in. He went to take a mouthful, then belatedly realised how that sounded. "What I mean is... erm... I'm not the only one that's been dragged through the dirt an' looks like it." His alterations didn't make it much better, and he sighed. The Soneya from a few days ago would have bitten his head off for a comment like that, and from more recently still snapped... he waited for the backlash this time around. "Ah, that's not right either. You're not too bust up are you? I'm a bit hazy on everything after those dragons dropped us right in it." He rubbed his arm across his forehead, filling his mouth to stop the stupidity pouring out again.
"Are they gonna let us go?" He changed tack, trying to cover his previous words with a change of subject. "I can't wait to get back to Kaionar. Any crazy shit that goes down there's not a patch on this..." He sighed.
| Soneya raised an eyebrow at Lutis’ struggles to find the correct expression and while her initial reaction had been to snap, she figured they could both use a break. What was the use anyway? There certainly would be time enough to snap at him later on.
Then again... would there be a later?
She shook her head to stop Lutis from trying even more catastrophic phrasings, and to rid herself of her previous thoughts. Then she shrugged. “I’m a little banged up, but apart from various cuts and bruises, I think I’m good. My feet are sore, and I still feel extremely dehydrated, but otherwise…”
Soneya shrugged again. “Nothing time won’t heal. I may not be going travelling any time soon though unless it’s an extraordinarily comfortable means of transport.”
Nursing yet another huge cup of tea from the seemingly bottomless pot in front of her, Soneya looked at Lutis. “Believe it or not, but yeah. The Elite, “she waved a hand in the direction of the backyard, “talked to the lawkeepers for us and basically made them back off after she straightened things out with the Volcano Longhorn and the…” Soneya paused and cocked her head. “I can’t remember anymore. Ebony Hunter! Anyway, she talked to those two and they all talked to the enforcers and basically, things are put right and the way they should be. We won’t be pestered again and are free to do as we please.”
She took another few sips, enjoying the feel of the liquid running down her throat. “So Kaionar, huh?” It seemed like months, weeks had passed since they had first bumped into each other. She had never really considered where he had from even though she was sure Lutis had mentioned Kaionar once or twice.
| "I'm pretty sure only Princes travel in comfort. Have you ever seen inside one of them carriages they use? Hoo, they're right fancy. No sore feet or arse for them." Lutis had had a poke around in one once, mostly looking for anything of value, but he had taken the time to appreciate the decor as well. "I don't think there's any way for poor folk to travel comfortably. I'm definitely not vouching for dragonback, riders are outta their minds..." He shook his head, thankful that Soneya had let his previous words drop, then pointed towards the pot in front of her. "Can I have some of that? I know what you mean about needing liquid..."
He helped himself as Soneya explained the situation during their time of rest. It certainly made things easier when dragons could sort themselves out without having humans meddle themselves up as well. Politics of the two species could be so different, and Lutis had to admit that their kind did complicate matters unneccessarily a lot of the time. Not bad though, all off the hook and sorted without having any more trouble. Not that they hadn't had enough already, of course.
Lutis nodded firmly. "Well, that's right good to hear. I'd kick up a fuss for something more, but I'm done with all that. I don't want nothing more from this town. Yeah, Kaionar. Bring me the desert. Lawkeepers there don't give you any jip, you know there's paving somewhere under the dirt of the streets, and it ain't full of all backward farmers. I was giving the whole adventuring lark a bit of a go, but screw this. It was supposed to be all 'seeing the world' and havin' fun and all that. Turned out to be a bit... different." That was one way of putting it. "I'm all run out of funds, anyway. Gotta head back and churn up a bit more cash. Re-coup. Been there? I'm not sure if I ever asked where you'd come from."
| “Money,” Soneya mused in a low voice. She hadn’t ever considered it to be important, but then she had always had a bit of a resource. Her parents hadn’t been the richest of people but they had made enough of a living to live comfortably and the mage herself had known how to make money with her craft.
Topping off her cup again, and Lutis’ as it had been considerably drained already, she replied: “No, I haven’t ever been to Kaionar, though I grew up not all too far from it.” She smiled briefly at Lutis. “I’m actually from Shayenne and I spent quite a few years in the Northern Academy. So basically just a stone’s throw away – for a dragon anyhow. Have you ever been to Shayenne?”
Was this the time to elaborate and tell him that she then ran off to live in the Amelle Forest? Nah, maybe it was better to let that part of her past rest. At least until it caught up with her, which it was bound to do at some point though she hoped that point would be far into the future when she might have an inkling on how to handle it.
Then another idea began to form in her mind though Soneya wasn’t at all sure it was a good idea. They both wanted to get out of there, he needed money, which she had, and she didn’t know where to go whereas he had a destination in mind. Maybe they could help each other out and then go their separate ways once in Kaionar. Nah….
And yet: “How long would it take to get to Kaionar?”
| "Shayenne, eh? Nah, I've never been there. Heard it's cold an' hilly." Soneya would probably find him a little naive, now they weren't purely running for their lives and getting into trouble. Lutis wasn't the most well travelled, and even Shayenne seemed a great distance away. Places outside of the desert- and even then, parts of the desert too- seemed like worlds away. "A stone's throw for a dragon, mebbe, but I dunno if you've noticed..." He pointed to himself, definitely not reptilian, spikey or huge.
"I always wanted to go to Nusfar. It sounded kinda great. But far. Like, real far." There was a joke waiting in there somewhere, but he couldn't quite think of one quick enough. His fingers tapped against the tabletop as he tried to think, but couldn't get there. Still tired, evidently. His eyes snapped back to the mage as something seemed to strike her fancy. "Kaionar? Well, it took me maybe... day an' a half to get out here? Wasn't really sure where I was aimin' either, so might be a bit less than that on the home straight. That won't be for a couple o' days for me though, 'cos I'm not gaarn to get there in this state. Ain't got money for board, ain't got puff to get outta here." He grimaced. Talk about a rock and a hard place. "What you thinking then? Kaionar's not a good waypoint back to Shayenne, you know that? Rough as it comes. I know you're no prissy but..."
| Well, she did have money enough for food and lodging for two, and then some. That last job had been fairly lucrative, no matter how annoying it had been. Silly people with no magic skills… But then she really shouldn’t even have such thoughts of the people who provided her with money. Besides, there was a time she actually enjoyed helping farmers out once in a while with true problems.
The money in her pouch of course did not come from one of the poorer members of the island’s community. No, it had come from a rich man who had indulged his mistress’ fancy about wanting some kind of miniature waterfall in her garden. It had been a fun endeavour, she had to admit, but the mistress had been an extraordinary pain in her butt.
“Yeah, Kaionar doesn’t really sound like the loveliest place one could possibly travel to,” Soneya agreed with an amused look on her face when Lutis once again fumbled for words. At least he didn’t consider her a prissy anymore. What a long way they had come in such a short time!
“And certainly not anytime soon, no, if it is such a long ways away,” Soneya added, thinking of her own abused feet. She kept nursing her cup of tea, regularly taking sips, as she stared into nothingness. Was it wise to stay here for a few more days? They both needed rest and healing, that was for certain, but there was the matter of those lawkeepers. The Elite might have warned them off and put everything straight, but Soneya felt a little fidgety. Then again, if they stayed out of sight and in this lovely kitchen with this lovely pot of tea, nobody would bother them.
“I just don’t know if…” The mage stopped talking, completely forgetting what she had wanted to say when it started to rain outside. It was only a little drizzle, but it was rain. A smile started spreading across her face and she put down her cup. “It’s raining!”
| Well, it was probably a good thing Soneya seemed to have decided against Kaionar. It wasn't a good place to be, for anyone really. Lutis, misguided as he was in his upbringing, had settled into fondness of the city, but he knew it was rooted more in the ease of certain parts of life, rather than quality of life the city offered.
He too, savoured the peace and quiet, being allowed to rest over steaming tea. What a luxury! Certainly not something that had happened recently, and he allowed his mind to wander as they sat. The last parts of his memory were a little fuzzy, and he wondered about putting them together into some logical order... But did it really matter? It was all a little unpleasant, and not something he wished to dwell on really.
At Soneya's exclaimation, he blinked and looked up from the spot he had been staring at in empty space, his eyes moving to her before out to the open door. The air felt thick with expectation, but he had to pay attention before he could see that it was actually raining. "Well, I won't be goin' outside now then," he said, leaning back in his chair as she seemed all ready to leap out the door and into the degenerating weather. "Friggin' rainforest, should have known it in the title really. Ain't got none o'this over in Kaionar." A shake of his head. "You goin' out in it? 'Cos sure looks like y'are."
| “What a question!” Soneya all but stuck her tongue out at Lutis. “Of course I’m going to go outside in this! It’s rain! Come on, you don’t know what you’re missing!”
And without another word, she jumped up, not even noticing her knife clattering to the floor, and ran outside, stretching her arms wide and turning her face up into the skies. It was more a drizzle than actual rain but it felt so, so nice and refreshing. Just what she needed. Actual rain. It was so much better than a bath.
It was the fastest and most natural way for her to replenish her magical energy, a much needed procedure after the previous days’ endeavours. Had it really only been a few days? It felt like they had been on the run and involved in this whole mess for months.
“Ah nevermind,” she muttered to herself as she slowly began turning in a circle, enjoying herself way too much considering it was only a few drops of water – that were nevertheless sufficient to start soaking through her clothes.
| Lutis huffed a laugh at the ridiculousness of it; nobody should get so excited over bad weather. He shook her head and followed at a more stately pace than the one she took though, bending to pick up her dropped knife from the floor and oof-ing at the pain of his ribs at the movement.
She was a strange one. Lutis leaned against the frame of the door as Soneya enjoyed herself, clear joy on her face as she turned up towards the grey skies. "You're a bit crazy, y'know that Soneya?" he called from his safe spot, nudging his foot towards a chicken as it tried to slip past him into the kitchen.
==X==
A week of recovery, and that was quite enough time in the sleepy little village for Lutis. He certainly couldn't afford to stick around for any longer, his money worn thin long ago, and the patience of those who doted on him not much better. Time to head back to Kaionar, for sure. The weather had been fairly atrocious (by his opinion) the past week too; the drizzle had turned into full out rain for days on end, drenching everything throughout the small known world. The dirt streets had turned to mud, the roof eaves dangerous to rely on for shelter, when rivulets of water poured through previously unknown gaps in the thatch. Soneya, of course, had been in her element. Lutis had quarantined himself to the indoors, unless he absolutely had to leave a building.
Thankfully the weather had finally broken to a weak sunlight, the clouds white now, rather than grey or black. Fine travelling weather, when he had to rely on his feet for transport. He clapped his hands together as he bid farewell to the family that had been putting them up for the week now, thanking them for their hospitality. Kaionarian he was, but he tried not to be too uncouth. That done, he turned to Soneya. "Well! Back to sunnier climes am I."
| The unavoidable moment of the rain letting up was upon them sooner than Soneya wanted. She had refilled her magical tank, so to speak, quite a bit, but she still felt like she was running on empty. Maybe it simply was an after-effect of overexerting herself and she would need to take it easy for another week or two. The fact that it could be something else entirely she pushed to the back of her mind. She did not really want to contemplate such notions.
The mud was a nasty side effect of rain unfortunately and she wasn’t very much looking forward to going out into it. Alas, there wasn’t much to be done about that. Things were what they were.
When the time came to take her leave of the incredibly generous family and of her partner in crime, Soneya felt her heart grow a little heavy – a somewhat new experience for her. She hadn’t felt like this in a while, usually being the one to break away from others for various reasons.
“Well,” Soneya said as Lutis turned to her to say goodbye, “I’ll be heading back to my cold and hilly place. I wish you all the best.” Impulsively, she stepped forward and hugged him briefly. They may not have started off as the bestest of friends, but she had grown kind of fond of Lutis, like one grew fond of various other annoying things in one’s daily life. “It has been... interesting,” she grinned, waving as they went their separate ways.
