| “No, no,” Jaden assured Soneya airily. “No side effects at all. Well, I suppose if I use too much magic it takes a bit of a toll on my energy, but not for a trifling little thing like this.” He gave a slight laugh of immodesty as he said this, beaming at the mage. “Don’t let me keep you, my dear, do go and keep yourself busy.”
Finally, the camp was set up around him and the others gradually came to join him around the fire. Jaden kept up a cheerful conversation almost single handedly- no particular ordeal- until Soneya finally settled next to him. Veces was right there as well, of course, but the man didn’t seem to be particularly talkative. Doubtless it had to do with the rhyming. “Why, of course, as a scholar they are of significant interest-” He didn’t get to finish before a flicker, a ripple in fate distracted his attention. His train of thought broken, he ran through the new possibilities which had just opened up- before Veces suddenly leapt to his feet and dashed away from the circle. The dragon dithered a moment, reluctant to leave his mat, before following the others. He arrived just as this bizarre person fully emerged from the sand they had been buried in for who knew how long. Perhaps just for that day, but from their words he doubted it. “I am delighted to tell you, my dear, that our entire expedition’s purpose is to find the Dragon Temples. I am sure you would be welcome to join us if you too are headed that way. Were they by any chance your destination when your, ah… unfortunate fate befell you?”

| Soneya was a bit surprised when the cup was suddenly yanked from her hands, but she didn’t react to the motion in any way, figuring it was a good sign that the woman – yes, definitely a woman, this person – was strong enough to actually take the cup and drink herself. It was good enough for the mage at least to know that they wouldn’t have to play the doctors for this person. Her knowledge of tending to wounds was minimal, though she wasn’t quite sure about the others.
When Jaden replied to the newcomer’s question, Soneya suppressed a chuckle but couldn't hide the twinkle in her eyes. ‘Unfortunate fate’… now there is one way of putting it. “Yes,” the mage took up the dragon’s line of thinking, “what happened to you? You appeared completely out of the blue. To us, it looked like there was an explosion, but surely that wasn’t your intention, was it?”
Getting back onto her feet, Soneya motioned for Veces to help the woman up out of her delicate position while she herself took the cup she had been handed back to her waterskin left at the fire in order to refill it once more. After all, the newcomer’s lips were cracked, she had been buried in sand and she had barely been able to speak now, even after gulping down the whole cup. She was definitely going to need more water. However, if there weren’t any supplies buried somewhere close by in the sand that the woman had brought along with her after her spell – that was the most logical explanation to Soneya – then she would have to find a water source soon. Sighing, Soneya hoped that this would not occur too soon, if only so she could rest a little before using up the bit of energy she had managed to rebuild again.

| Pulling the new woman to her feet, Veces nodded to the small group and stepped away, catching one of the laborers gawking at the scene and gave him a series of commands, all hidden in a long and infuriating riddle. The man stood puzzled for a minute, lips pursed in thought, and took no action until the reaper pointed towards one of the tents set up with a huff. That he understood and, with a little work, a tent was quickly reared for the newcomer. Thankfully, expeditions such as this always brought some extra supplies, though this was not exactly their intended purpose.
He sat down once more at the fire, ushering the three to join him. A seat was set for the new woman, and a slab of bland worm meat was set nearby should she hunger. A small crowd gathered, as well, curious to hear the tale that this person would tell. Perhaps not the best environment for someone recovering from shock, but it would be quite a task to usher them away. He was curious of her abilities as well, and it would be much less frustrating to have others ask his questions.

| In the distance only audible by the breeze across the desert wisps of a voice can be heard, but only ever the one, it sounded eerie over the breeze, ethereal almost as the voice said sentences, as though arguing with another who wasn't there "Dont know ... complaining!!!". "Easily ate ... as much as i did ... more!!!". The voice drifted in and out with the breeze yet always seemed to be coming closer, until, a figure no bigger than a pin head could be seen on a distant sand dune, silhouetted by the sun that was now setting behind him. This figure seemed to just stand there observing, with a rippling motion as the wind whipped around him from up here, the figure then collapsed, tumbling down the dune and disappeared behind a mass of other dunes and a shrill screech could be heard just after as another wall of blown air headed for the party. Followed by nothing more than silence. |

| There had hardly been time to sit down the new woman by the fire, Jaden settling comfortably back onto his mat all ready to quiz her, before voices drifted across the desert. Briefly, he wondered if he was having some kind of hallucination- they were common enough in the desert, after all- until he noticed the other members of the group also looking around curiously. Somehow the voice sounded far off and indistinct; yet surely they could see far enough that anybody close enough to be audible would also be visible?
Eventually, though, one of the gathered men exclaimed and pointed to the horizon. Sure enough, a figure had appeared over the top of a sand dune and stood there, apparently motionless. Murmurs arose from the group as they all puzzled over what this person could be doing; was he lost? Perhaps some kind of malevolent spirit, forever wandering the desert? Well, they would never find out from just sitting there. It was curiosity more than good sense which prompted Jaden to sit up and shout across the sands to the stranger. "Excuse me?" he bellowed. "Might you be a fellow traveller?"

| Malakath lay unconscious in the sand at the bottom of the dune, his dragon Purpurapilum was well aware of the calling human and barrelled off in the direction of the noise, being a shade runner she excelled at the long distance even though she hated gettin sand in her coat she ran on to the camp and made sure she had retraceable steps behind her, she arrived shortly after setting off and looked at the crowd unsure of wether they were friendly to dragons, she exclaimed "Please, my master, needs help, water, dying" Through huffed breaths and fearful glances before turning back and seeing about bringing her unconscious master back to the camp straddled across her back, as she re-arrived he fell from her back and tumbled down another dune to finish his journey at the edge of the camp, covered in clothes that in turn were coated in dust, his hood being pulled from his head revealing his waist length white hair and his eyes closed over as if he fainted from dehydration. His dragon sat atop the dune asking people the same question "Please help him?, I beg you" |

| The amount of random people suddenly popping out at them was incredible and Soneya was growing a little annoyed. A moment of respite would be nice. They had been travelling all day as well. Of course, she wasn’t going to refuse to help them if she could, and as a water mage it would probably fall to her to take care of them, but come on already!
Chaos once again erupted for as the newcomer was brought into camp and Soneya, instead of fussing around with finding out who it was this time, quite simply set to prepare a larger bowl of water for the dragon and another smaller one for the master, whoever that may be. The shaderunner had been anxious, out of breath and certainly dehydrated, so the master would not be far off from that condition.
If the newly arrived woman was any hint to go by, then these would be even worse off. One bowl she left sitting next to the woman, just in case she might still be a little thirsty or needed to get rid of some sand from between her teeth, the other two she picked up to rejoin the others.
“I assume you’re fit enough?” she silently asked the dragon as she set the big bowl down before it. She then stepped to the man’s side, shooing away some of the other people from the caravan so she had some room. Upon seeing the man’s condition and his pale skin, she instantly started barking orders, ignoring the fact that she wasn’t actually in charge here. But anyone who could be in charge was either not close enough to act rapidly or speaking in rhymes, and let’s face it, while Veces could come up with the most beautiful rhymes from time to time – though she would obviously not admit that to his face – there was a bit of a problem with issuing orders that way.
“Get me a tent over here! Now!” Looking at the man’s dragon, she asked harshly: “How could you even have let him out into this sun? This kind of direct sunlight could kill a man of his disposition!” Soneya was by no means a doctor nor was she very experienced but she had heard of people with this sort of skin trouble, and she had never heard anything good about it. Better to be precautious rather than sorry.

| The dragon was bewildered by this woman's tone and she was lapping her water thirstily whilst registering and making a note of where the tents went and what should. She looked up at the woman when she said the word condition "My master is different, he doesnt have any sort of condition that makes him less of a person than you. Besides, i dont tell him where to go, i only follow, he was the one who wanted to come out here, hell if i know".
She was still looking around and making mental notes of the people at the camp, the reaper, the woman who had spoken to her angrily and the sandy woman laying there took her interest as most of the others looked simply boring. She grew concerned with the commotion around her Master which then subsided as they moved away and had him under a tent, out of the sun. She lay there after not quite finishing her water but she managed to grip the bowl with her teeth and lob the remaining water over her fur to dampen and cool her down. She wandered foreward her damp feet padding leaving footprints in the sand and stuck one of her tails in the tent, then proceeded to shake it, coating Malakath in flecks of water.
He bolted awake straight upright, catching a mouthful of his dragon's fur, which was damp, instead of spluttering like a normal person he sucked at the tail until it was pulled away, he then took a while to register his dragon barking "That insufferable imbecile ..."
It then trailed off unable to hear through the ruffling of the tent and the wind, he looked around inside and found the bowl of water which he proceeded to guzzle thirstily before letting out a sigh of relief. He was relieved simply because he wasn't dead. After replacing his scarf and hood he poked his head out to find his dragon, wondering how and where she got a tent from. Only to be greeted by a bustling caravan with some different looking people, a man carrying a scythe, a dusty looking woman and another woman, he yelped and hid back inside the tent.
He sighed and sat by the fire, avoiding many of the people. Drinking from his bowl where his dragon went and sat next to him, he smiled under his scarf at the sight of her steaming fur but then said "Thanks Purr" and sat staring into the fire.He then got up and approached this woman rather nervously, tapping the ends of his fingers together like a child and said raspily "Umm th-thank you for your service and y'know, not leaving me to die in the desert". Still twiddling his thumbs he looked around at the caravan of men, the ones that looked back gasped when they saw his now open eyes and he looked down muttering to himself "Always the same". But felt rudeness toward the woman who saved his life would be a little inconsiderate, so he turned away from them and looked directly at her through the narrow slit his eyes can be seen. |

| Nope. Veces didn't bother getting up to try and aide the man or his dragon, seeing as by the time they were seen by the caravan every available hand was bustling to be useful. His input would likely be lost among the sea of voices and aides, so he instead opted to stay at the fire and keep the new woman company. Could she even be considered new anymore? Did semantics even matter in a desert caravan? Was he going to be able to rest tonight with all of this activity? By now the sun was definitely setting, the sky painted in warm reds and stark violets.
Well, he might as well try to make acquaintances with the white-haired woman. Doubtless she's even more confused about all of this than most of the people here.
"It seems you've arrived at a rotten time, but it seems like all should be fine. Tell me, if you will, how you found our band? It's not as if the ruins are close at hand. Is it us you seek or was it chance That brought you here in the desert's expanse?"

| “You silly dragon,” Soneya muttered as she glanced between the man and his protective companion. For being his companion, she knew fairly little about what such extreme white skin in combination with the sun could do to the man. Maybe there was something else at play as well. Maybe he didn’t start going up into flames – so to speak – when he was exposed for too long, but Soneya wasn’t about to either demand an explanation or apologise for her behaviour.
“Ignore them, half of them have never gotten out of their village,” Soneya muttered, “and the other half are starting to be a little puzzled by the many random additions the caravan is getting. In the middle of the desert no less.” The mage looked at the man, her own eyes pulled together into slits against the slowly disappearing sun.
“What on earth did you think you were doing? In the middle of nowhere? In a desert? You could have died under that sun!” Not that she cared, but she wasn’t one for passing up an opportunity to give someone a piece of her mind. Plus, the man just came handy and that way, she wasn’t yelling at Veces for a change. Who, by the way, was still comfortably sitting down, chatting up their other newcomer. Honestly, men!
After a moment of consideration while she focused on refilling both their bowls with water, using up almost the last of her strength, Soneya looked back at the man with tired eyes. “Don’t mention it. I don’t like leaving people to die if I can help it. Though people better stop making this a habit,” she added with a grunt before leaving the tent again to check up on the woman Veces was keeping an eye on. Her hands worked quickly but she couldn't hide the exhaustion from her step, which almost made her tumble into the sand. She had worked too much magic in a short span of time and she was out. If there were any more new people deciding to appear on the brink of death, she wasn't sure how much good she would be able to do them anymore.

| He looked concerned at her current state visibly noticing she was tired, he smiled a little and said to her about the previous incident "Please do not get angry at Purr, she knew full well that the sun would do a man of my predicament no good yet she cannot stop her own father with force, I admit it was foolish for me to enter the desert at all but the fact remains that I have a curiosity about this temple in the desert, word travels fast around these parts and so does my dragon, hence why I guess we came upon one another by happenstance."
The dragon was not as kind however at how the woman reacted to her but still was not about to be rude to her fathers saviour as she took the water she had been given back to the woman and lay it down next to her, pushing it toward the woman with her snout saying shortly after "I understand it was foolish for me to carry a man of his nature through a desert but he goes where he pleases, I simply try to get him through it as fast as possible". Following this they both walked and sat by the fire as he looked at the other members around it, his eyes fallin on a man with a scythe, he was addled by this weapon he had and his unique looks and said simply "hello?" |

| The woman seemed a bit dazed, preoccupied with her own thoughts and unquestionable echaustion. He could see that Soneya, as well, was being pushed past her limit, but she was hard at work keeping the new arrivals from keeling over themselves. Her stumble, however, was the last straw, leading him to stand up and offer a steadying hand, keeping her in place.
"Perhaps now is the time that you Take your rest, as others do. You've done your part, now don't make a peep, Leave the rest to me, and go to sleep."
With his lines said, in a calm voice, he guided the seated mage to stand, gesturing for Soneya to follow as he set the woman into a spare tent. She fell asleep quickly, though a bit fitfully, but it was well enough sleep that they should have no need to worry about her. With her done with, Veces motioned for Soneya to come near, muttering to her in hushed tones.
"what do you think of these new additions, Are you worried that they may hurt our mission? Spare hands are useful, to be sure, But some of these souls need more than simple cures. Our band may have no need for such a large load Of dragons mages, and... questionable rogues."
That isn't to say that all rogues are questionable. In fact, he could think of one Rogue in particular who was very admirable. And powerful. And her band of followers were no pushovers, either. He would hate being under her command, though, that was certain. Now the Elder, that was the person he wanted to follow.

| From all the people taking part in their excursion, she hadn’t thought that Veces would be the one to get up and offer her a helping hand. She had a right mind to tell him to get away from her, but at the same time, she also knew that she really didn’t have much of a choice if she didn’t want to fall down right there and then and in front of everyone. She did have a bit of dignity and she intended to preserve thereof what she could.
“Thank you,” she muttered, oddly touched by his concern. Though she didn’t particularly like being told what to do, even less so by someone like the white reaper, but it couldn’t be helped. He was right. She did need her rest and she most definitely needed to replenish some of her magical strength, otherwise they were going to be done for if they didn’t find a proper water source along the way the next day.
With the other woman sleeping off her own exhaustion, Soneya turned to Veces as the man spoke for her ears only. “I’m not too sure, to be honest. There are just too many all at once for this to still be counted as coincidence but maybe it really is? They seem so very different that it seems impossible they are in on it together. Helping hands are useful indeed, you are very right. And with creatures such as these beasts popping up out of the sand all of a sudden, any fighter will be needed. But I can’t help but wonder if it’s a good idea to leave them unobserved. Maybe we should post a couple of guards? Not just for the outside dangers but for possible dangers from within our own ranks now. What do you think? Do you trust them? All of them? We can’t really tell them to go away again though, can we?” The thought hadn’t crossed her mind before, but it was an interesting one, and one she wouldn’t mind taking herself up on if Veces agreed. Not that she was all too fond of him, but she knew where she had him, approximately.
Sighing, she added. “We simply can’t be sure they’re not intending to rob or harm us! Will you, please take care of setting up patrols?” Her words were slurred for the most part as exhaustion got the better of her, and she couldn’t even be sure if Veces had even heard them so low had her voice been. “I should get some rest.” Placing a hand lightly on his arm in thanks, Soneya bade the man goodnight and moved towards her tent to get some well-deserved hours of sleep.

| He nodded in agreement with Sonya's opinions, offering a quick wave as she moved off before going to a group of workers, gathered around one of the fires. He said a few quick, garbled lines of poetry to them, complimented with copious amounts of hand gestures, in an attempt to tell them his wishes. It took a few tries and multiple different version of the same orders, with much internal deliberation before the group finally understood the reaper's intent. In a flash, the men ushered all of the other people into their respective tents, then threw lots to determine working hours. There were mixed exclamations of joy and annoyance as they self-assigned their patrols. Those not awake would lay by the fires, to be in reach should they be needed, with the one or two men awake keeping an eye out for any sign of danger, and tending to the fires as need be.
Veces, however, had not been there to find his hours. Not that he was shirking duty, far from it, he was just far more content to just stay awake all night, as years of traveling and work had let him cultivate stamina much greater than most other people. A sleepless night was of little worry for him, and he would still have plenty of energy for the following day. So he sat alone, in the dark, ears open and senses alert, his eyes staring deep into the blade of his scythe, the dim light shining from the crystal boring deep into him. Would he find it here?
~~
The night passed uneventfully, with the entire party waking as the sun was still coming up from the horizon, dismantling all of the tents and preparing the beasts for travel. The spare meat, of which there was plenty, was loaded into sealed jars for it to keep. The caravan was ready to go before the sun had even made it a fourth of the way through the sky, and before they knew it they were off.
The pace was slower than it had been when the expidition was first started, the loss of mounts meaning that some people, Veces included, were forced to walk and ride in shifts. But trouble wasn't encountered for the rest of the trip, though dark shadows occasionally blotted out the sky, and worms smaller than the one seen previously could be observed breaching the sand in the distance, presumably as they went after prey that were fewer in number. It would not be long until they reached the temples, their guide assured.

| The night had helped Soneya to regain some of her energy but she was still feeling pretty weak from the previous day’s exertions and she decided against using her magic for personal comfort on that day. The hood of her skyblue coat was pulled deeply in her face to keep it as much as possible in shadows so she did not accidentally get a sunburn.
Despite the reassurances of the guide, the ride felt like it took ages before they reached their destination. Of course, the duration was not aided by the fact that they had to alternate. They did find one of the mounts running around erratically as it had completely lost itself in the masses of sands – obviously – but it was in no condition to be ridden at the time being.
The structure which finally rose out of the sands before them was impressive to say the least. Many spires reached into the skies and there were quite a few more pieces than Soneya had imagined still standing completely intact. The temples were, for lack of a better word, breathtaking in their overbearing presence. The sun lighted the shadows between various spires and statues but there was a lingering fog staying behind, something that recalled tales of old and warned any trespassers away from dabbling with history.
Several entrances into the temples were visible into chambers above and below ground, though they couldn’t be too sure how secure these entrances were and if the chambers into which they lead wouldn’t risk crumbling into pieces as soon as someone dared to enter. It would be part of the challenge, or so Soneya assumed, but she did hope that this expedition did not end in the ruin of the Dragon Temples. She would have to remember to caution them to some sort of prudence. It would be too much of a shame to have them crumple completely into dust.
It was odd, but the ruins, as far removed from everything they seemed to be, looked suspiciously as though a couple of huge dragons had thoroughly enjoyed themselves in those ruins. Why, she could not quite fathom however – they were in the middle of nowhere! The mage shook her head to try and rid herself of the thoughts or the visuals she was getting about whatever it was these dragons had done but she couldn’t ignore the fact that some parts of the ruins were far more ruined than they likely should have been, despite old age and weather conditions. A few bones were scattered here and there as well.
“A little creepy, if you ask me,” she muttered as she caught up to Veces, standing beside the white reaper as they eyed what was left of the great Dragon Temples. “I mean, they look amazing, but I can’t shake away the shivers running down my spine. Can you?”
The rest of the caravan began spreading around the premises a little, already taking care of their duties such as rebuilding the tents, taking care of the mounts they had left and generally preparing the camp. The guide was just staring at the ruins in fascination, completely lost to the world.
“What do you reckon we should do first?”

| Riding alongside the main horses was Malakath upon his dragon, he looked at the Temple and smiled as inside there would be some shade at last, he was hot under his hood and scarf and still received odd looks from the regular workers he turned to the pair that had helped him and aided him and said simply "I assume this is where our course was for, it doesn't really seem like much at the moment but appearances can be deceiving".
Purr turned her head, her astute hearing picking up some rumbling from around them, it sounded like it came from inside the temple, or beneath it, as if something was moving around inside the halls she said cautiously to her master but loud enough that everyone else could hear "This feels wrong master, there are ... Movements in the depths"
He nodded at Purr and dismounted, moving to stand in the shade as he looked into the rather contrasting darkness of the interior, he turned to the rest of the party and said "I know it doesnt need saying, but we really need to be careful down here" |

| Eventful as the night had been, Jaden was pleased when they were all finally able to get to sleep. Stretched out comfortably on his mat, he slept soundly and woke in a leisurely manner as everyone else was beginning to pack up the camp. He nibbled briefly on some leftover meat, watched the humans bustling around, and got in the way a good few times before they were finally ready to set off. As they left, he watched the newer arrivals with some interest; this party was varied, to be sure. He had heard of them, but he had never seen a human with that man’s odd, colourless feature’s before. It was rather unsettling, to say the least, when his pinkish-red eyes turned on Jaden. While he had managed to bring back most of their lizards the night before, a good few had slipped through Jaden’s magic, and the humans grumbled amongst themselves occasionally as they trudged along at an agonisingly slow pace. That wasn’t to stay Jaden was a fast dragon; no, no, he didn’t like to move above a dignified trot. But the people’s feet sank easily into the loose, dry sand, apparently making walking a massive effort for them. Personally, he couldn’t see the appeal in riding another creature- how on earth were you supposed to stop it from going the wrong way if it got a whim into its head?- but each to their own, he supposed.
When they finally arrived at the temples, their hazy silhouette appearing tantalisingly on the horizon and slowly solidifying as the expedition drew closer, Jaden could scarcely contain his excitement. His eyes were wide as he slowly raked his gaze over the buildings, taking in their magnificence. “Oh, exquisite,” he breathed, approaching a stray lump of rock which lay carelessly on the ground nearby. “The carvings here… Imagine all that we could learn from this!” Leaning close but not daring to touch or even breathe for fear of harming this artifact, he examined the shapes. Pictures were mingled with simple patterns and twisted lines which might have been writing, though it was difficult to make out. If this exposed block had fared so well, he held high hopes for the preservation of whatever might be found within the temples. Parts of it seemed oddly more damaged than others- freak storms, perhaps? He couldn’t imagine any other cause- but all the same, plenty of it was in good enough condition that there was likely to be a fountain of knowledge concealed within. It had been forgotten for years, centuries indeed- but now he was here, to uncover its secrets and spread them to the world! With a contented sigh, Jaden looked to the other members of the expedition, finally tuning in to their conversation. “It doesn’t look like much?” he squawked indignantly at once. “These buildings may not be perfectly preserved, it’s true, but within lies knowledge from the era of the Arch Mage himself! Just imagine what wonders we might uncover here, lore of magic or snippets of Dragons Cove’s history- the possibilities are endless!” Culturally blind as the man might be, he did however have a point with the second thing he said; Jaden tutted to himself for a moment longer as he listened before replying. “Indeed,” he agreed gravely. “It would be all too easy to destroy parts of this precious heirloom in a moment of clumsiness. We must take great care to touch as little as possible… and, I suppose, the buildings may be unstable. We would do well to check before venturing down any of the more damaged passages; I will be able to use my powers to predict most unfortunate occurrences, but it would be wise to be prudent all the same.”

| Soneya was right, the ruins were very unsettling, if not majestic. The towers which stretched into the sky were much more impressive than what was seen across most of the continent and, Veces would wager, would have outshone even the most extravagent buildings in Didienne, if not for time taking its toll from the old husk. What must have been extravagant depictions and artistic masterpieces that enveloped the entirety of the temple were now no more than feint grooves riddling the surfaces of the temple, save for those which were lucky enough to be blocked from the wind by the rest of the structure. And though breaking and failing were to be expected, some of it did not look quite so right. Large holes, smashed into the building with no real rhyme or reason, looked as if they had been punched in with brute force, an idea bolstered by the fact that bricks and the broken remnants thereof were still above the sands grip, poking out as if for their last breaths. The sands were already staking their claims on the building, as the open doors allowed sand to accumulate inside, inches deep.
Though he was interested in taking a closer look, as others were, there was work to be done; camp would need to be set before the first trip in, and there was much to do. And this time, it wasn't just sleeping tents; Large, weatherproof canopies were being raised, with solid floors to boot, filled to burst with various stations for examinations and testing. An actual kitchen was being set, as the group grew tired of the same old worm jerky and food needed to be stretched out. A medical ward, small but efficient, was raised as well in case of emergency. Those who wanted them got their own sleeping quarters, and the bonfire for this camp was large and centralized, unlike the small, scattered fire pits they used before. There was a pen for the animals put in place. and large candles lit which could deter pesky flies, though some might argue that the smell wasn't quite worth it.
Despite hours of labour, the camp was finished with many hours of daylight to spare, and the weather had been gracious enough to not blow away any tents while they were being pitched. A large barrel of water was crowded around, at the behest of the expedition's true leaders; the scholars whom had been here before. They did not seem quite accustomed to this weather; though strong enough to pull their own weight, they could do little else, and their magic skills were not suited for most hard labour. Three of the group were rather thin, though the last of them was a rather portly man, whom many of the workers identified as 'The Bottomless Pit.' They were all pale folk, three humans and an elf, all with skin bright red from the heat and sweating up a storm, though cheery and full of energy nonetheless. They spoke with clear diction and buzzing anticipation of their plans;
“Now, I’m sure we’re all very excited to get in the-“ “Very excited, yes.” “Yes, thank you. Now, we must be sure to be careful, you never know what might be important.” “Stones with writing on the bottom, preserved cloth or wood, anything!” “Be very delicate with what you find, and be carful. Though the stonework may seem sturdy, I highly doubt any wood has stood the test of time, and bricks can crumble!” “Try to not spend too much time in there all at once, be sure to rest and record your findings, don’t let anything slip through!”
This, of course, was directed at the whole entourage. Nobody gathered wanted to miss out on seeing for themselves what was inside. And really, who could blame them? Nobody had seen the interior of this building for as long as recorded history had been on the continent.

| “Mr Grimm and his dragon are right,” Soneya piped up. At least they all agreed on that particular bit. “We should be careful with every step we take inside those ruins. Not just because we don’t know how well they’re going to hold up considering their age but also because we don’t know what might be awaiting us inside. I wouldn’t be surprised if there were some traps or other surprises.”
When they were about ready to finally go inside the ruins, the mage cocked her head to the side, looking at the card dragon. “Any immediate danger you’re sensing? Or will it be safe to enter this first level of the temples?” The camp had taken fantastic form in the meantime and it looked like a veritable small city, especially in comparison to what they had been setting up so far on their voyage. But of course, this time they were planning on sticking around for more than just one night. This was where they had been headed, where they had wanted to come, and seeing the determination on some of the scholars’ faces, she was sure they weren’t about to leave any time soon either.
No matter what her opinion on this expedition had been in the first place, not to mention the fact that she was paid less than she should be for her help in providing water and protection with her abilities, Soneya had to admit that the place was rather fascinating and she didn’t regret coming along.
“If everyone is ready?” She motioned for a handful of guards - or what counted as guards on this expedition - to enter first, followed by the more skilled archaeologists before she let the scholars enter. They knew what to do, having been on such hunts more often than most of the others. The place would have to be a little secured as well. “Then everybody knows what they have to do! And try not to fight over who gets to examine things first.” The second part was muttered solely for the ears of Veces, next to whom she was standing, but so nobody else could hear. Looking at the white reaper, she wondered when it had happened that they seemed to be on the same page rather than trying to oppose each other.

| It seemed that Jaden was on the same wavelength as these other scholars; as they stood in a loose group around the water barrel, he nodded along approvingly to the instructions. While most members of the expedition seemed rather well educated, there were a couple of people who did make him question their presence. He wouldn’t put it past them to destroy some priceless artifact through sheer ignorance and clumsiness. He was glad that somebody else had seen the need to instruct the group on the importance of preserving the temples.
It took a great deal more faffing about from all the humans before they were ready to enter the temples- really, they’d taken a ridiculously long amount of time to raise the camp, though he did have to admit they’d done a good job of it. Finally, though, they had all gathered their journals and pens and gathered in a cluster before the first temple they were to enter, the rather talented little mage girl taking it upon herself to shunt the different groups about into position. When she turned to consult him, he moved forwards and cleared his throat rather self-importantly, delving into his mind and working his way through the layers of probability, examining all their possible futures. This was one of the easiest things to do with his powers, to predict his own immediate future, and it was clear to see all the different potential outcomes. Apart from one fantastically unlikely occurrence where an earthquake caused the entire temple to collapse, they should be safe for the time being; beyond that, there were too many different passages they might choose within the temple for him to be able to make any worthwhile predictions.
With him having given the all-clear, the group finally began to enter the temples. He felt a shade of annoyance that one of the largely uneducated louts would be the first to enter, but there was a need for security. They would all be able to see the wonders of the temples for themselves in good time.
The entrance was an archway, its stone engraved with similar marks to those he had already observed. It gave out into a modest stairway, largely unembellished and all made of the same stone. Set into the walls, however, were alcoves containing all array of fascinating relics- from small statuettes to some kind of dish which put Jaden in mind of an incense burner. Ahead, he was aware of the guards moving out into a chamber, but he lingered to examine the objects with wide eyes, unaware that he was blocking the passage for those behind him. Just to think how long these items had been here, undiscovered by human or dragon! Once again, he was filled with hope that he might find some kind of ancient text or inscription on the subject of magic. Preferably fate magic.
