“We are uhm… under the Everplains. Somewhere,” corrected Rilos, although he did cringe away from Arasolra to say it. She didn’t look like she wanted to really know, rather just… well complain. He followed after her as she set out, his footsteps as light as possible to avoid drawing her notice- or breaking the ancient stone underfoot. It was too beautiful to accidentally destroy.
Of course, he didn’t like the lack of sky either, being very at home in the clouds. But, he had been ground-bound for a good week or more now, and he was unfortunately having to wave goodbye to having the skies at his command at any time of day; at least, unless he had a spotter to fly with him and point out all those awkward treetops that just happened to get in his way.

At least the Sunblaze wasn’t turning to taking out her irritation or dropping mood on him. From past experience, he didn’t put it past her to just suddenly lash out on a whim. Her emotions were so wild and unpredictable, it was difficult for him to work out which ones would give her that sort of urge- anger was a given, but were there other triggers too?
He pondered on it as they walked, twisting his head from side to side to look around at the buildings, and make sure he didn’t accidentally walk into any.
“Mountains are battered with wild weather. This place cannot be; perhaps it is why it is so intact?” ventured Rilos, sniffing at the side of a building as they passed. Was it an abandoned city? Surely there had to be a cause for it, if it was.
“Hello?” he called a little louder, listening for any response… or whether there would be silence.

She turned her gaze over her shoulder at Rilos, shooting him an acidic glare that promised murder for his corrections. Everplains-ish, Racksom-ish, what did it matter? They were in a hole in the ground and there seemed to be no way of getting out at this rate, and the walls on either side of her as she walked were making her more and more irritable the less it seemed that they were likely to disappear. The haunting echo of Rilos' call into the darkness instantly grated her nerves raw, however, and Arasolra visibly tensed, her whole body going still as she waited for something unnatural and unfortunate to crawl out of the stone work at the sound of Rilos' voice.

When the echoes had finally disappeared and remained unanswered, Arasolra chuckled under her breath. "Looks like no one's home." She snickered and kept walking, her claws making loud clacking noises on the stone underfoot which was turning less and less into plain cobbles, but more into giant slabs of marble. The change went mostly unnoticed by the mildly distraught Sunblaze, until the lines of light that illuminated their way all seemed to begin converging at a spot together up ahead. The glow created by the light was not glaringly bright as might be expected, but rather more like the brightness of a late afternoon sun on a mild day as opposed to the comparable twilight that they had been walking in before.

Picking up her pace a little, Arasolra headed toward the magical light, feeling relief that at least the square where the lights all converged was open enough to comfortably fit both herself and Rilos with their wings outstretched if they had a mind and then room to spare. It was obviously a crossroads with many of the city's bigger streets meeting at the huge round about like spokes on a wheel. At the center of the open circle was a fountain, but instead of trickling water down its sides, it trickled light. "Huh. That's a neat trick." Arasolra murmured and started forward to inspect the phenomenon when a distant echo returned from the blackness of the cavern.

She went still again, the faint murmur becoming louder and more distinct until she could finally hear the word repeated over and over again in a perfect imitation of Rilos' voice. "Hello?"

Rilos quite firmly shut up again at the look Arasolra gave him, shrinking a little in on himself, with wings tightly pressed to his sides. Ooh, he did not like that look from her. It reminded him of the look she had given him when she had lost him in the wreckage of Racksom… oh he had seen her rage then. It was not something he wanted to see again any time soon, if ever, please.

He couldn’t decide whether it was a good or bad thing that they were alone in the strange underground city. It meant that nothing terrifying would leap out of the ruins at them… unless it was silent. But it also meant that he was alone with Arasolra, and she was definitely terrifying enough for him. Another terrifying monster wasn’t really required for him to be scared already.
When marble coated the floor instead of cobbles, Rilos quietly put his muzzle down to feel it, bumping his nose and trailing it along the cool stone. It was soothing, and he might have laid down on it to cool his bruised sides if the sunblaze had stopped, but she seemed rather… self-absorbed. Much too much for him to ask, and he didn’t want to risk irritating her any further than he already had. The moment they stopped though, he put his nose, then his cheek onto the floor, rubbing it over the cool stone with a small hum in his throat. It felt soft, and cooled his itching scales. It wasn’t as if the strange angle covered his vision anyway, when he could look around just as well with his eye.
The sight in front of them was very strange, perhaps as strange as Rilos’ awkward angle… bright and almost seeming to gush down to the ground like water, pulsing a little, but only faintly.
“This must be magic; nothing else would-“ He spoke from the ground, but was halted mid-sentence and mid-rub by the ghostly voice that suddenly echoed back. It chilled him to the bone, his eyes wide and frightened as he straightened up again, heart suddenly beating fast.
Echoes didn’t work like that.

His spines slowly stood up on end, bristling as the noise grew louder, and louder still. Much more than how Rilos had called out earlier; a human would have put their hands over their ears, but dragons had no such luxury. Arasolra scared the Spined Shadow, but he found himself cowering close to her side, looking up and around at the city with growing fear, the voice booming back to them.
“I’m sorry, I didn’t think!” he squeaked.

At any other time, perhaps Arasolra would have mocked Rilos for his strange actions. A dragon rubbing his face on the ground such as the Spined Shadow had been wasn't a common sight, and certainly smacked of degrading. An amused bit of her mind that came out to play whenever annoying things struck her offensively offered that perhaps she really should burn his other eye and then give him a real reason to slink about on the ground. But that moment came and went very quickly.

Arasolra put her back to the fountain of light, facing the direction of the soft echoing call that was quickly becoming an unbearable howl. But no matter how she twisted her head side to side, she couldn't see the source of the sound. The lack of an enemy to burn combined with the deafening shout had her scales raised all along her hackles, the magical light in her blood reacting to her very potent fear. And she would not fool herself just now; she was very afraid.

Rilos' brush against her flank as he came to cower along side her nearly had her jumping out of her skin at the contact. She almost lashed out at him, her claws ready to take a chunk out of his hide for the offense when the shouting finally ceased. There was not silence, however, but a faint echo of "Hello?" as if from a hundred thousand throats, all gently calling the curious greeting and the darkness of the cave seemed to move, flowing up the streets toward the center spokes like ethereal mist.

Arasolra's blood ran icy at the ghostly whisper of the chant and put her claws away, backing fully against Rilos so that they stood shoulder to shoulder, her body trembling with fear. Fear! As if she had ever had cause to be afraid! But this darkness was unnatural, and despite the gentle glow of the fountain at their back and Arasolra's own contribution to the matter of lighting in the cavern, it could not be pierced.

The mist became a wall, slowing its movement and little chunks of black, about human-sized, began to flow forward from the wall of impenetrable blackness. The chunks became shapes and figures with gaping mouths and holes for eyes where white light like the glowing fountain behind them shone out through their darkness. Soon every street was filled with these shifting hunch-backed human-shaped shadows, fading into and out of each other in a constant shift of movement at the edge of the turnabout.

Arasolra was ready to scream at the blackness, the constant whisper of "Hello?" beginning to drive her mad as the shadows hovered expectantly with those hollow eyes at the edge of the light circle. She parted her jaws and what came out was the roar of a desperate dragon along with a beam of light.

She had seen buildings melt and forests become enshrouded in fire at the power of her magic. But this blackness was unyielding. Her beam of light shot through the first rank of shadows, illuminating briefly the long street that they gathered inside of and then quickly swallowed that light. Arasolra shut her mouth, panting heavily. If dragons could sweat, she would be slicking the floor right now. Those ghostly black figures simply stared back at her with their circular lit eyes. "Hello?" They chanted again and again.

"What are these things?!" Arasolra hissed in a whisper that cracked with fear, her claws trying to dig into the marble but found no purchase.

"What?" The shadows chorused together, then began chanting the question over and over again. "What? What? What?"

Rilos hated the fact that he could either see only Arasolra or the city around, but not both. He hated the fact that he didn’t know which he found more frightening either; that they had a strange being nearby, or beasts, or whatever it was that had stolen his voice, or that the sunblaze who had caused him so much damage was now pressed trembling to his side. He didn’t have many solid thoughts in his head, to be honest with himself. To light up his spines like Arasolra had done, or to dim down his colours so that he might not be noticed?
Well, he was always going to be noticed next to her, and it wasn’t as if she was going to let him run off and live. He lit up brightly too, his body tense to see the darkness creeping towards them.
Well, that wasn’t something that happened unless he willed it, and he certainly didn’t now. In fact, he willed quite the opposite, especially when he could feel the sunblaze’s terror next to him, worse for everything new that happened. One couldn’t think right when they were terrified, and although Rilos was fearful too, this was the dark. This was home, he was a spined shadow. If Arasolra could not, would not think, then he would have to be the one to.

Oh but that really was not something he wanted to face.
He pressed himself closely to Arasolra, shivering at the sight of so many blank faces appearing in the mist. Their eyes were the worst, wide and white and empty of every emotion. No pleasure or pain, just empty. The noise was awful too, worming its way inside his head until he couldn’t even work out whether he was now imagining it, or whether it was an actual noise he could hear.
He trembled through his whole body as Arasolra suddenly roared, lighting up the city with her fiery blast- even if it did nothing for the ghosts in front of them, and nothing for Rilos’ dark adjusted eyes. He saw sparkles and stars as he blinked to try and get rid of the startling white, but the ghosts seemed completely unperturbed. They didn’t attack or advance any further however, just reforming where Arasolra’s blast had disrupted them, and continuing as they were.
Strange, he would have thought such a thing would spark some sort of response, even if it were the worst; or the best, to leave them in peace and dissipate into the dark again. Doing nothing perhaps was the strangest thing of all.
That meant that they also, couldn’t do nothing. Otherwise they’d just be stuck at a stalemate for the rest of however long the ghost… beings were there, and Rilos couldn’t easily see Arasolra picking up her courage from the floor and testing them. The Spined Shadow wasn’t a particularly courageous dragon, but he wasn’t as terrified, and curiosity was under his fear when he removed it. He was good at controlling his emotions, and while he often found them strong, he also could ignore them well enough to assess the situation at hand in turn.

“I think…” Rilos was quiet with his words, much more so than he had been before, but the ghosts still managed to pick up on his words, repeating after him, “Well. Magic, perhaps?”
Magic, magic, magic, magic.
It was spookier when they imitated his own voice, rather than Arasolra’s; distracting, too. He had to try and concentrate however, looking around slowly from side to side and seeing more ghosts appear all around them as he turned his head. They did not yet come close, although they weren’t far away. Like a halo, a set distance in a circle, and stepping no closer to their light.
“A strange sort of magic.”

He stepped out a pace towards those in front of them, testing his paw slowly forwards, then shifting the rest of his body. Slowly, slowly… and they moved away, drifting back like flotsam on waves, keeping their distance. Rilos’ gaze raked around him, then he took another cautious step, a little in front of the terrified Arasolra, tense all over in case suddenly they moved against him. But for now, they were just spectres, senseless and soulless.

The switch from What to Magic in the voices of the shadows only managed to grate on Arasolra's already frayed nerves even more. She wanted to blast them to oblivion, but as her previous display had shown, her magic had no effect on the shadows. That, almost as much as the darkness, unsettled her. Never before in her life had she blasted something and had to continue facing it. Greater and lesser men and dragons both had died screaming to her attacks, but these insubstantial shadows that stood before her now casually ignored her power. Arasolra had never once felt helpless before in her life, but she was definitely feeling it now. It didn't help in the slightest when Rilos moved forward as if he were going to protect her.

"What are you doing?!" She hissed, nipping his shoulder. "Don't get close to those things! What if-" Her conjecture was abruptly halted when she saw the shadows slide quietly away from Rilos, keeping some distance between themselves and the shadow dragon. Her eyes went wide and she backed up toward the light fountain until her tail bumped against it, the cool wash of magic touching her scales briefly before she twitched her tail aside. "Did you make these things?" Her fear quickly turned into anger, and anger was something that Arasolra knew very well how to deal with.

Did you? Did you? Did you?

"Did you make these little shadows just to scare me?!" Her voice rose in pitch and volume at the same time, her rage quickly manifesting and bubbling just below the surface, ready for an explosive release. "You little rat! MAKE THEM GO AWAY, RIGHT NOW, OR I'LL BURN OUT YOUR OTHER EYE!" And she meant it, too. With every fiber of her beings, gods, did she mean it.

Relief washed over Rilos as the ghosts… spirits, spectres, whatever they were- didn’t attack. Moved back from him instead, curious. He didn’t understand what they were or why they moved as they did, but they certainly didn’t seem to want to harm him. Or Arasolra for that matter, even when she was terrified almost beside herself, it seemed.
So, that once again made her the most dangerous thing in the room. At least, unless these things had some hidden intent that hadn’t been taken account of.

He had to twist his head right around at the sunblaze’s complaint, drawing in towards himself as he saw how terrified she was. Almost to a silly extent, when they both knew as well as one another that these shadows wouldn’t hurt them now… hopefully. Then her accusation hit him, and he quickly shook his head.
“No, of course not! Why would I do—“
Oh, that was a fiery temper. Oh that was bad. Oh, that was something he really didn’t want to invite… he cowered more as her voice rose, the spectres making the din even worse and echoing around.
Now that was something terrifying.
“No, no, no I… I would not…” He took a step backwards, then another, then cringed as she yelled outright at him.

His other eye? He couldn’t lose his other eye! A decision unexpectedly struck him and he was suddenly running in the other direction, fleeing from the sunblaze before she could actually enact her words.
He didn’t want to be burnt, no no!
The ghosts parted in front of him like a wave as he raced through, colours dimming from bright glowing greens and pinks down to a dark teal in a matter of seconds, instinctively trying to hide as he raced away from the angry female. The spirits pulled closer to him as he let off less light, much closer to his paws as he dashed away madly.

Usually, running prey meant soon-to-be-dead prey in Arasolra's world. Rilos had just triggered a very powerful hunting instinct to catch and destroy by turning his back to her and fleeing (wisely) in the opposite direction as fast as he could. With a roar that was half rage and half frustration, she leapt after him, forgetting momentarily about the dark little shapes lingering just outside of the circle of light given off by the fountain. Her rage was in full swing, giving her convenient blinders as she snapped at Rilos' tail, almost catching it before he pulled away.

She was just about to take a deep inhale and breathe her devastating beam of destruction on Rilos when a chilling icy sensation abruptly spiked through her legs and worked its way up to her spine. Startled, she looked down to find the shadow figures crowding around her, reaching out with amoeba-like limbs to touch her scales, each arm of shadow inflicting that same icy sensation. Arasolra almost lost her mind, her scales flashing violently with light as she leapt back with a high pitched squealing scream of terror. Her wings snapped out, giving a powerful downward flap and launched into the air away from the grasping little shadows.

The sunblaze didn't get very far when the icy sting of the shadows touched the thin membranes of her wings, numbing them almost instantly with their coldness and her horrified shriek and she nearly tumbled straight out of the air. Her claws hit the stone floor with a crack as she half landed, half tumbled to the ground and scurried as fast as she could toward the water fountain of light, very nearly running through it in her desperation to be back to safety. The cool wash of the light magic slithered over her, easing some of the biting coldness in her wings and paws, but she was too frightened to notice the blaming effect.

"GO AWAY!" Arasolra screamed, opening her mouth wide and blasting a beam of light into the surrounding darkness in the general direction that Rilos had fled. She'd long ago lost sight of him, and started blasting random beams of light in every direction, roaring her frustration every time. But no matter how many of the stone buildings she melted through, the shadows did not go away, simply chanting "AWAY!" Over and over again at her in her own voice. Gasping for breath, well past the point of panicking, Arasolra finally shut her jaws, curling around the fountain of light and made a low keening noise in the back of her throat, spent.

Rilos simply ran as Arasolra bulled after him, too scared to shriek as he raced away, whipping his tail from side to side and beating his wings through the air to pull himself forwards quicker as she roared. Oh, it was a terrifying sound, and one he had never wanted to hear again, after the first time… it was the stuff of nightmares. She was a nightmare.

He ran as fast as he could through the buildings, leaving Arasolra far behind as he dashed madly this way and that, scraping his sides against the stone walls as he tried to squeeze through a gap slightly too small here, wriggling and leaving dents under his claws, gouges on the walls of another empty place as he scrabbled upwards, a trail of darkness following him where he tried to hide his tracks from her. It dissipated like mist after him, but there were still the dark spectres to take its place.
They pressed closer as he moved further from the fountain, his scales black and spines a dull turquoise , hiding away from the sunblaze. She couldn’t see him… wouldn’t find him. That didn’t stop her rage however, and he could hear it even from a distance away, her fire sharp and bright against the blackness of the rest of the city. It hurt his eyes and hurt his ears to hear her scream, cowering across a pair of rooftops and frantically, desperately wishing there was a way out.
The sound of her didn’t grow however- it seemed to tail off with a little time, mercifully, and he opened his eyes to find the little shapeless figures gathered around him, their eyes glittering gems amongst the backdrop. Stock-still and silent, he observed them as they gently waved back and forth, showing no dislike or threat to him.
Arasolra had been so terrified. There were plenty of them, indeed, but they were just spectres. They were strange, but there was no harm in strangeness.
A small puff of air from his nostrils dissipated one of the bigger ghosts in front of him, wafting it across the roof, before it reformed just as it topped off the edge of the building, sinking down like a dandelion seed in the wind. He crawled over to the edge of the roof and watched it fall, drifting further out where he had blown it to.

They were bizarre, but he didn’t mind, creeping down the building after the ghost and blowing it further back the way he had come, others wafting along too as he puffed and swished with his tail. Soon they moved like a wave in front of him, a strange ringmaster of these puppets that scared Arasolra so much.

PostSubject: Re: Rogue ]}-Shadow & Light-{[ Aero   Rogue ]}-Shadow & Light-{[ Aero - Page 2 Icon_minitimeTue Apr 22, 2014 5:39 pm

Trembling with fear and sobbing quietly. She had wrapped her tail around herself with her paws tucked against her belly and her face buried underneath so that she didn't have to see the dark shapes floating just outside of her little ring of light. The light of the fountain cascaded off of her scales like mist as she lay shaking underneath it, rolling off her in gentle waves.

After much sniffling, Arasolra finally mustered the strength to uncurl herself from her little ball of misery and look out at the darkness. She was startled to see that most of them had disappeared, vanished into the darkness. A few still lingered around the edges of the light with their creepy soulless glowing eyes, but it wasn't the wall of shadows that it had been before. What's more, these few had fallen silent, apparently having forgotten the last word that Arasolra had said in order to repeat it back endlessly.

Getting her her feet, Arasolra cautiously approached the edge of the light with her head lowered. The lingering shadows bobbed their bodies and floated silently over to her, extending pudgy little arms to try and touch her scales. She took a few steps back, the silent little shadows watching her move. Well, she couldn't very well stay here forever in this underground cave. Shadows or no shadows, she had to get out of here. Bunching her muscles, Arasolra took one running step before leaping over the line of shadows that had gathered to examine her and landed cleanly on the other side. She only got a few paces away however before more appeared, gaping at her sudden appearance into her realm and reached out to touch her.

Arasolra shied from the contact, scrambling backward and ran straight into the line that had been watching her before. A startled shriek escaped her lips when the coldness of their bodies washed over her, but she refused to run back to the center square. Shivering, Arasolra pressed on forward through a swath of the shadows. She had to get back to the entrance to this cavern. Maybe she could dig her way out through that sinkhole that they'd fallen into in the first place and escape.

As she walked though, she started to hear the scrape of something moving through the darkness. She stood stock still, the shadows wafting about her feet like icy black mist as she listened to the sound. Her hunter's instinct aroused, Arasolra followed her ears and crept silently toward the source of the noise. It was easy to recognize; the gentle scrape of scales on stone. But finding the source of the noise was harder. The shadows got steadily thicker the closer she got to the slight noise to the point where it was hard to see much of anything. A form that was just slightly more concrete than the shadows surrounding it caught her attention, and Arasolra's rage was instantly rekindled.

"YOU!" She screeched out of pure anger, setting off a cascade of the little shadows repeating the exclamation a thousand hundred times. Arasolra had found Rilos, and she was not pleased.

Unlike Arasolra, Rilos actually started to enjoy the dark after a little while. It was quiet, it was safe, and the little floating monsters didn’t seem to want to harm him. In fact, when they brushed against his scales, they were rather pleasant, cooling the itch of all the scars down one side. The night was his domain, and being in the dark only served to make him brighter; he was a nocturnal dragon, and although he appreciated the warmth and colour of the daytime, he loved the night a thousand times better. He was practically bouncing as he blew along the little spirits before him, looking up and around every so often to look around at the empty city, and of course, check that he wasn’t about to be attacked by a very angry Sunblaze.
Everything was calm and quiet however, thankfully and blissfully so. The spirits seemed to suck up all noise around; they were silent themselves, the only noises the fair-off yowls of Arasolra, and his own small clacks and scrapes of claws, scales, wings.
It made him bolder, to know that she was so afraid of these harmless creatures.

Busying himself about his work, he managed to work out quite the crowd before him as he slowly, slowly headed towards her. They seemed to accumulate from nowhere, rolling over one another like a wave of tumbling black bodies and glowing white eyes. When are few fell back to drift over his front paws, his scales matched their strange bodies in colour. Rilos started to think more about them as he walked, noting down their behaviour, calmed by the way they moved so…
Sunblaze!

He froze in terror as her bright form came into view, no longer beaten back by his new ‘friends’, but glowing with rage and unstoppable once again. His courage deflated like a badly made soufflé, his eyes wide and his whole body suddenly tensed mid-step. He knew his camouflage was perfect, she could never see him… don’t let her see him.
He howled back as she seemed to see him anyway, noticing the darker splodge that was him amongst the glowing eyes of the spectres. He bounced away in fear, spines raised and flashing with colour. A few sparks of lightning spat from his mouth as he backed away, his eyes wide and looking for an exit, but the waves of ghosts in front and around obscured any small places to hide, any crevices and nooks to cower in.

When his lightning touched the ghosts in front of them, all of a sudden they lit up with bright white light, buzzing with excitement and wheeling around, gaining lift and life of their own as they spiralled away. The others didn’t take much notice, those that touched them taking on a slight glow that faded away again after only a brief moment, but enough for them to shuffle and wobble against one another.
“I am sorry, no, please do not hurt me! I meant no harm!”

"Don't hurt you?" She hissed, creeping forward, her shoulders rolling like a predator stalking prey. "DON'T HURT YOU?!" She screeched, sticking her face close to Rilos', staying in view of his good eye so that he could see precisely just how terrifying that she could really be. As if he wasn't trembling hard enough. "You're lucky that I haven't burnt you to a smouldering CRISP!" Light glowed fromt he inside of her mouth as if she were about to shoot off another beam of incinerating light.

She opened her mouth, touching her teeth to the burned side of his nose without inflicting a bite. "But I can't get out of here, and the shadows are your friends." She moved her head back over to the good side of his vision, her lips hiding her sharp teeth once more. "Tell them to get us out of here." She growled, eyes narrow with irritation, her scales glowing slightly. "I've had enough. This isn't fun anymore."

Normally Rilos would have watched the little ghost-stars in awe, but all his attention was for the Sunblaze now. Oh, she was going to kill him. There was no doubt about that, no matter how eloquent or cowering he tried to be. He cowered as she screeched full-bodied at him, too scared to even close his eyes against her might. Her spines and scales stood up all over, making her look even more huge than she already was; as if she wasn't already terrifying. The ghosts showed no sense of fear at all.

His eyes did scrunch shut as he saw fire light up the inside of her mouth, fearing the worst and hoping that his eyelids would protect him, although from what she had done the first time... Please not let his last sight be this terrifying female. His belly was low to the ground, the ghosts that had been following underneath him squishing to either side to give themselves room to float around again, bouncing off his sides. When Arasolra's teeth scraped his cracked scales, he flinched, eyes opening again and searching blindly to see her. Not that it was any relief when she crept back into view on his good side again.
"Y-Y-Yes alpha," he stuttered as some way of thanks? Apology? to Arasolra, sliding away the tiniest of paces to avoid her foul face. "Er... Take us... to... a way out? P-please?" Sparks jumped from his mouth again in nervousness, the spirits they touched zooming off in a blaze of light and all-gusto. Well, it was a chance better than any others Rilos had just standing where he was...
"Shall we follow those ones?" he managed to choke out, all willingness to please and fear of being crisped alive... again.
