| 20th March-----(Spring Equinox) Llomyra's Planting
- Spoiler:
Also known as: Festival of Planting, Festival of Spring
Purpose: Celebrate the beginning of spring and the first breaking of soil on the new year This is a Turichan festival and as such, is not observed by many in Dragons Cove beyond their home area. Some in Shayenne may have adopted similar festivity though. Deity: Llomyra, goddess of fertility, planting and the sun (Also Turichan)
Activities: The morning of the festival all the women gather in the town square then head out to the fields together to sing and dance in the early dawn of spring. The men are not permitted to leave their houses until the women, bearing the new flowers and recently bloomed buds of spring, knock on their doors and give the head of the household a sprig of greenery. Once this happens, the women head to the biggest house in the village (or two, if they can't all fit) and begin preparing a feast. The men are then given leave to head out to the field and begin ploughing. Before they break the first ground, the elder of the village will recite an ancient verse praising Llomyra and ask for the blessings of a good crop and fine weather for the season.
After giving a small token of blood to the goddess of the planting, the ploughing begins and lasts until evening. When the men come home from the fields, the women transform the village into a festival site with a large banquet table and home made candle lanterns that hang from every roof. The festival lasts until the wee hours of the morning and has much singing, drinking, eating, and dancing. A lot of native folk songs are played, and it is not uncommon for young couples to disappear from the festivities. Legend says that Llomyra is especially generous with her gifts of fertility during her festival and the couples that ask for children earnestly will have their wish granted.
23rd September-----(Fall Equinox) Feast of Arynimen (F)
- Spoiler:
Also known as: Harvest Festival, Festival of Fall, The Joining Harvest
Purpose: Celebrate the beginning of fall and the first day of harvesting. This is a Turichan festival and as such, is not observed by many in Dragons Cove beyond their home area. Some in Shayenne may have adopted similar festivity though. Deity (Turich): Arynimen, god of the harvest, moon, and virility
Activities (Turich): The festival of Arynimen doesn't start in earnest until the moon has risen and darkness falls on the land. On the morning of the harvest before the moon sets and the day begins, the village elder will go out into the field and thank Arynimen for the crops that are produced that year and ask favor for the next year as well. Once the sun rises, the able bodied men of the village go to work in the fields while the women, children and elderly prepare for a large feast as well as a number of games and activities that are based on strength, agility and speed.
Once the harvest is done, the men are secluded in their homes until darkness, preparing for the festival that evening. Once the stars have come out and the moon is in the sky, a bonfire is lit and the village elder will speak some ritual words in praise of Arynimen and will call the Champion of Games from the previous year to oversee the evening's events. Under the eye of Arynimen, the young marriageable men of the village participate in a number of games while the others watch on, eating, drinking, singing and dancing.
The goal of the games is to prove the men's abilities and therefore their suitability. Once the games are concluded, the previous Champion will declare the winner, who will receive a kiss from a virgin maiden and a barrel of dried food as his reward. Legend has it that if a man proposes to and marries a woman on the night of his victory, their marriage will be harmonious and prosperous. Many young couples are wed during the Feast of Arynimen for this reason.
1st December-----Surahnian Festival of Life
- Spoiler:
Also known as: Festival of Vitality, Celebration of Blessing
Purpose: Celebrating youth (typically for those up until the age of 20 or so), newborns over the course of the month and birthdays of those born in the month. As a Surahnian festival, it is very unlikely to be celebrated beyond Surahnian borders. Deity: Nowadays, no deities are involved, however traditional Surahnians may still pay respect to the Willow Mother.
Activities: The day is held as a celebration in blessing of the December month. The saying goes that those born within this month are blessed with vitality and strength, as they would have needed both to survive what was deemed in the former homeland, as the hardest month in the year. This festival as such, is particularly strong within the poorer portions of the Surahnian community. The events of the day typically involve a "showing off" for the youths. Common events are shooting, wrestling and swordplay contests (and any other combat focal discipline) Females are also encouraged to add to the atmosphere with upbeat dance and song. Groups of youths may also take their rather loud celebration to the streets, while still dancing/singing/marching, in search of freebies from their older folks. This is a time for the older people to celebrate their past, but also their children and others children too. In general, there is a far greater amount of overindulgence (where possible) so communal feasts are often set up, everybody must bring some food if they wish to attend and the younger ones that participate are expected to eat to their full content, drinks are often supplied to further envigorate. The festival has a reputation for being rowdy and warm, though at times dangerous. Marrying within this month allegedly promises a couple many sons.
It is often the case that repeats of this days activities are seen later in the month. In addition, youths will often choose to volunteer into the Surahnian Army toward the end of the month, this too is seen as another manifestation of strength.
