| Cathriona Menderil (Cath for short) Human Herbalist and Healing Practioner
Age: 43 Family: - two sons (Farrow and Kyllian) - one daughter (Lark) - six grand-children (Lark has 4, Farrow has 2)
Relations/Clans: - Sand City and surroundings
Appearance: Being a woman of a certain age already who has borne a few children, she has grown love handles and her face has kept a hint of roundness to it as well. Make no mistake however, she is a tough cookie, no matter how soft her exterior might have come to look over the years. Her flaming red hair has streaks of silver beginning to show all over, having lost a little of its colour but none of its vitality. Her grey eyes see a lot more than most people would like them to see.
She always wears a belt with various small pouches strapped to it, most of them containing a number of herbs used to brew tea or tea-like potions to cure simple ailments such as stomach ache, head ache, aching joints, sore throat, light infections, runny noses.. And her preferred clothing is comfortable. She doesn't mind colours or styles as long as it's comfortable.
The Character: Cathriona earns a living as the local herb practitioner as it works in tandem with a magical tendency she has towards healing light scratches, easing bruises and anything else that is surface damage. She cannot knit back together bones or make infections disappear with the touch of a hand. Some say that herbs work miracles in her hands. But that is nonsense. They would work the same in anyone else's hands. Cathriona isn't entirely sure what exactly her magic all entails but she is happy it can be used for the good of the people. She was once gifted a very useful book on potion mixing, some of which she's brewing on a daily basis for normal ailments after a long day of work such as back pain, sore muscles or headaches as they're more reminiscent of tea rather than actual potions. Mostly everything works on an herbal basis and Cathriona is always scouring the stalls on market day to buy up any useful ingredients.
Her husband, Narmin, used to work as a fisherman before he recently lost his life at sea after a particularly heavy storm surprised him and several other fishermen. Most of them died that day, only a handful lucky enough to have been washed up on shore a few hours later, barely breathing but still alive. They married young and they've been together even longer before that, so the loss weighs on her a lot of the time, having lost her partner in crime, but she tries not to let it show too much, not wanting her family to worry about her. And private matters are not good to discuss in public - the gossip mongers thrive on it!
Farrow and Kyllian learned the ways of fishing from Narmin while Lark took up net repairs with her skilled hands. Farrow has now taken over the family fishing business after Narmin's untimely demise and is sometimes struggling with all of it as he had not expected to be handed the reins so soon. Kyllian was supposed to be his partner in crime but unfortunately he was lost six years ago in what the family assumed to have been an accident, but nobody really knows, and none of them like talking about it. Lark is doing net repairs not only for Farrow but for neighbouring fishermen as well, a job she enjoys, painstaking as it is, through the simple fact that she can do it at home and keep an eye on her children when they aren't off badgering their grandmother.
Cathriona sometimes has a bit of a temper but has the patience of an angel when dealing with someone who has a serious issue or illness. When nobody requires anything of her, she prefers to keep to herself these days, taking care of her house, her children though they mostly don't want to be coddled anymore seeing they have children of their own, so Cathriona also spends a decent amount of time with her grand-children, watching them, teaching them.
She likes order however, so sometimes that makes the lessons a little difficult. Her herbs and other ingredients are all sorted and in a specific order on how frequent they're all needed to prepare various teas, potions, poultices, and so forth. She knows where everything is by force of habit and muscle memory, and when the grand-children do not put things away properly, she gets snippy. They're getting better at it though, slowly coming to understand that it is pretty handy when everything stays in the same place. It helps them memorise ingredients and make less mistakes. Cathriona is teaching herbalism to one boy (Bal) and one girl (Lily), the others having either no interest or no skill for the profession. But there's always something that needs doing to keep them occupied.
Because of Cathriona's involvement in most people's lives by means of her profession, they talk to her a lot, speak of their worries, their doubts, their hopes and of course, the gossip mill never rests! She slowly was established as one of the most important people in the village as somehow she always seemed to know everything (well, if everyone tells her everything...) and some day, they just began turning to her for advice on practically any conceivable subject until it was an established fact that she was one of the leaders of the village. Not a job she ever applied for but sensing it would be a bad idea to refuse the trust the villagers put in her, she accepted.
Nowadays, she's one of the people organising market day and sometimes she helps hash out the details of their deals with the various dragon families in the area.
