Setting: New Racksom, Palace
Time: 7th of July, 2709, 7pm, a warm and pleasant evening.

The life of royal Surahnians is never dull; between the organisation of masses, theatrical slaying of enemies and leading a nation of people to victory...Zartear finds himself this time with an unexpected and slightly more interesting form of company, and from the enemy no less.
Skeloph Yeriss, she-wolf of the Didienne High Council, is not a stranger to games of power or acting the part as a means to the ends. But the outcome of this meeting, is down to fate to say the least.

Private Board.

Zartear did not often find himself with a "free" evening, not when every day with the unfurling of his plans he needed to pay the utmost attention to them. It was only the weak and unfit royalty of other countries that allowed their great leaders to live in luxury and never know the force of will, to never let it show in their works. That was not to say Zartear did not have a taste for the finer things in life; very much the opposite as he now sat amongst some of the finest warriors of Surahnia, entertained by the cleverest of fools and with the fairest of women, dainty ornaments to the occasion and yet more testimonies to his greatness.
Still, for all of that, it was tedious and dreadfully dull. There was not a person here in this room, even as he sat at the centre of an arc of some of his greatest men with the fire on the other side of the room, he could not make to do the most absurd of things with only a gesture of his fingertips. Even throw themselves into the fire for his sake; because they were as foolish and simple minded as the actor before them now. Nobody here was an equal to his mind – as he did prefer it, such equals were dangerous – but it also made him long for something more substantial, for something to test his teeth on.

He took another drink from his goblet, his eyes glazed over, even as those amongst him laughed.
Completely and utterly bored.
Yet when he did not laugh, they looked to him, still smiling, hoping that the King found amusing what they did too. Surely then the King would see how much he could relate with them, how fondly he thought of them…all the favours he would give to them.

Instead he began to look about the room, dark though it was, it was alight with torches and candles all around, splendid wine-red rugs covering the stone floors. It was not big; a room assumed for the use of only a few to host and a few to be guests. None of the public chaff to be allowed here, that much was obvious by the presence of Zartear’s personal guards standing, stoic as ever, by the doors to the room.

The journey to Racksom had been less than comfortable; days spent on the back of a horse dragon as they flew relentlessly towards the city, with disgusting dried food and always the concern in the back of her mind that the Guardians would send somebody to pursue her. The commons may have been fooled by her charade of illness as she left the meeting, but not one of her fellow councillors would have been, and none of that would have matter once she had vanished- it wasn’t like anyone was going to kidnap her now they’d tried to take away her authority, was it? But all they could do was try; Skeloph had worked far too hard to give up that easily.

Despite some difficulties along the way, however, she had made it to Racksom. Finding accommodation hadn’t been difficult; the steward of the Council housing in Racksom might have been instructed not to allow the old High Councillors to stay there, that they were no longer in power- but when Skeloph turned up on the doorstep with two dragons, a maid and several large cases in tow, somehow he hadn’t been inclined to turn her away. She just had that effect on people.

Now, she had established herself sufficiently in Racksom, having racked up a good number of guards and maids who were as loyal as possible after two days, and she was ready to present herself to Zartear. She didn’t know exactly how much he knew of Dragons Cove’s ruling system, but it had to be a fair amount, based on the reports from her scrolls- that was the best thing about being in Racksom, how swiftly information on the Surahnians was delivered to her these days- and so it seemed prudent to take the safest approach. She was dressed in her usual finery, a sweepingly excessive gown in her house colours, adorned with enough jewellery to buy a small village’s food for a year, and sitting primly in a carriage adorned with the Council’s arms as it drew up before Racksom Palace, halted by a squad of grim-looking Surahnian guards.

The next fifteen minutes were passed in a mixture of threatening, bribing, lying and plain insisting her way to the palace itself. Formidable the Surahnians may have been, but they were apparently unprepared for quite how stubborn Skeloph was prepared to be. Eventually, they conceded that they would consult some higher power on whether or not Skeloph was important enough for an audience with the king. Her reputation preceded her. It wasn’t too much longer before she was led to an antechamber from where she forced an unfortunate attendant to carry a message in to Zartear. Eventually, at long last, the guards swung open the doors to the hall and allowed her to pass.

“Lord Straten,” she called in her best Surahnian over the murmur of the assembled men, making her way down the aisle grandly with little regard for the maids who scurried to keep up as they held her skirts. “It is a pleasure to make your acquaintance at last. I am the Lady Skeloph Shyvmore Yeriss; no doubt you will know of me.” The rest of the room had fallen strangely silent, staring at this woman who had interrupted their evening without warning. She ignored them, simply smiling up at the man who was obviously Zartear, as she continued across the room towards him. Her grasp of this new language was far from secure, but she was confident that she had rehearsed that speech enough times that she would not make an embarrassment of herself with it.

Zartear's interest had been stirred suddenly when he heard the sound of a firm knock and a murmur of a voice beyond the doors, a guard then leaving through the doors to speak outside for a small while.
After that time, he returned inside, addressing Zartear directly with the usual formality, a hand to his shoulder and a pronounced bow.
"Great King, a Lady of the name Skeloph Shyvmore Yeriss seeks an audience with you. The Lady would appear to be a High Councillor from the DDC capital of Didienne." The guard was hesitant to speak too boldly with such words in his mouth, it was extremely rude for anyone to come to address the King without being expected, and his eyes from behind his helm looking to the King, waiting for his disapproving snarl.

"Very well." Zartear nodded, "Welcome her in, unannounced or not, it is not gracious to keep a Lady of such stature waiting, is it?" Something of interest had now been found; he only need determine whether she was as she proclaimed to be, or simply a phoney sort and it would soon be painfully obvious. Indeed, how often was it that one of such status would come to him without prompt? It was brave too, all things considered.

As the woman entered the room, yet he noted too some of what could only be called her entourage were held back, he looked her over, his eyes gleaming with curiosity. He would not rise for her, however, although he did slightly shift in his chair so he straightened up as he opened his palm in invitation.
"A good evening to you Lady Yeriss." She had some knowledge of Surahnian, yet her accent was not that thick and common one of Racksom. It was pitched and quite unique, from another place. Didienne allegedly. "Forgive me for the lack of suitable preparations, we did not expect one as yourself to be visiting. It is a, bold and honest thing to do. An action that demands great steel. We welcome you now." Zartear spoke, his voice relaxed and quite warm, though he noted how splendid in appearance she was; adorned from head to toe in the most lavish of decor, she was very clearly amongst the richest. Fit to be a ruler, perhaps. Though Zartear would not believe words and appearances alone, his usual suspicions snaking about the room, as he watched her every movement.
If she wanted to arrive in such a way and demand his attention, she could have all of it, including his vicious scrutiny.

Fortunately, Zartear greeted her as befitted one of her rank- well, he did her some discourtesy by not standing in her presence, but then foreigners could hardly be expected to behave perfectly. Certainly he seemed to be quite the diplomat, switching to the Common tongue at just the right point so as not to dismiss her attempt at his own language but also not embarrassing her by speaking more of it than she could understand. Her guards had been walking in close formation behind her, but she now dismissed them with a wave of her hand, sending them to stand tensely against the wall.
“Please, don’t worry yourself unduly,” she replied graciously as she finally came to a halt a little way from his throne. “I neglected to alert you of my coming; a breach of courtesy for which I apologise. I thank you for your compliments; I have always prided myself on my composition.” These last words were accompanied with a wide, friendly smile. It was quite the accomplishment that the less genuine one of Skeloph’s smiles actually was, the more heartfelt it appeared. “Your welcome is most generous, Lord Straten.”

She paused in her speech for a moment as a servant ran up bearing an ornate chair, followed closely by her personal maid Anakaria, whom she had dispatched to find a seat. Now, as it was set next to Zartear’s place as the table, Skeloph seated herself with much rustling and rearranging of skirts.
“Much as I am sure I would have enjoyed it, this visit was not made simply for pleasure,” she continued once she was seated to her satisfaction. “I am sure it will not surprise you to hear this. I represent the current government of Dragons Cove; my position within the High Council specialises in all relations with other nations, such as the City State of Kaionar, and so I am fortunate enough to be able to treat with you on behalf of the entire island. I am sure neither of us wish to move straight onto matters of business, however; please, Lord Straten, I would be fascinated to hear a little about your people and your origins. Dragons Cove has certainly never encountered any of your race in our recorded history of some two thousand years.

Zartear, although not ready to ‘worry himself unduly’ was very much aware of how unusual this was, but for now, he let it carry on. She behaved like those in power, and for now, that was enough. The fact that she had arrived at such a time was only natural; the DDC had been dragging their feet something so slovenly, he was half expecting their leaders to have already been amongst the ranks of New-Surahnian forces.

He seemed facile toward her, giving her time to speak her piece as he nodded slowly, returning her smile in kind with his own, noting her apparent lack of inhibition or anger. Quite something when one’s own nation was being devoured.
“I would not have expected it to be, Lady Skeloph.” He said measuredly, as he watched her sit down, making herself comfortable…”Much can be said for my people, but there is little to understand beyond what you see. Everything that composes my people is a show of what Is believed, followed and understood down to each person, in their families and themselves.” He paused, finding the words briefly. “There is nothing to learn, but discipline; it makes us strong. Respect to the crown, as they give in return for my service, and honour to the Willow Mother, our great goddess.”

He did not feel like divulging a great many details to a strange guest, so he smiled again, with obvious pride.
“Virtuous priorities, in my people. And what of your own people Lady Skeloph? In my time here it is hard to speak much for them, they do not seem of one identity.” No, they all scattered in panic. However much others might have thought of the comment innocently, to his people…hearing such a thing would have been no less than a barefaced insult to the training of said people.
“Indeed already, I have seen there are many. Perhaps they reflect for their many rulers?” And he wondered, what a people following with this ‘Lady Skeloph’s” attributes would be at all like.

It was impossible to miss Zartear’s gaze as he assessed her, clearly judging her from the outset. Well, she understood as well as anyone; she had had to deal with more than a few time wasters in the past. It didn’t take long before she had become able to see from a glance whether or not a petitioner was actually worth talking to. What he said of his people fit in with the information she had gleaned; it was intriguing to hear it from his mouth, though, rather than piecing ideas together from the reports of her scrolls.
“Interesting,” she murmured, folding her hands in her laps and scrutinising Zartear. “Indeed, your people all seem to be of the same mold; Dragons Cove is, on the other hand, greatly diverse. I find the majority of the High Council to be depressing similar- corrupt and lazy old men who have no other wish than to line their own pockets- but I think the variation in the land itself causes such differences amongst our people. The stones are a major cause of this, exaggerating certain elements in the different regions… though I suppose you must know some of this, given that the earth stone is held here in Racksom.” She wondered, even as she spoke, how much the Surahnians really did understand about the stones. Skeloph was no great expert, of course, knowing little of magic, but surely they would be even more clueless. Besides- any existing information on the stones could be rendered useless in the face of the lightning stone’s apparent destruction. Certainly all who lived on Dragons Cove would have to consider the impact of such an event; she had already dispatched some mages to investigate.

“It must be a rather different experience as a leader, to have such an obedient kingdom; the people of Dragons Cove are great believers in freedom, as I am sure you have noted by now. Not to mention the majority of our population are not at all warlike… whereas Surahnians, I believe, train every man or woman who is able to fight?” Certainly she could see the advantages to such a scheme, but it seemed more than likely to result in mutiny, she thought. At least, it would be guaranteed on Dragons Cove, where most of the commoners had hatred for the High Council ingrained into their minds.

Upon hearing her speak he was surprised to hear her turn within what she spoke. He anticipated her to boast of their diversity and culture as he had learnt they so often leaned upon, but no, she openly berated it. Her as a part of the nation, too. It was extremely unusual and Zartear raised his brows, his look of quiet surprise there, shuffling in his seat to become more comfortable, drawn in by the odd way of speaking. Who said such things? Why? And then talk of corruption.

"High Councillor Yeriss, such corruption is surely a blight upon any nation. One we know the power of; and so we do away with it at all signs of its occurrence..." He began, at least making it clear he was not open to any corruption himself. Corruption was a weakness within the nation, it fostered the worse kind of trait in his subjects; disloyalty. Disloyalty was death.
"But if I may, I find it odd that you would speak of such a...raw and tender topic of your own nation to I." The enemy. Why would she say this? Zartear thought on it still as he spoke further. "And so suddenly, without invite. Lady Skeloph, what brings you here? Nevermind of your other comments, flattering though they may be to a Leader like I," Greater though I am. "But it is quite unheard of."

For a moment after Zartear spoke, Skeloph simply held his gaze, lifting her chin a fraction in response to his raised eyebrows. Once she felt she had made her point- without being rude, of course- she replied, smoothing down her skirts as she did so.
“It is most interesting that you should say this, Lord Straten… For you touch upon the very issue I came to discuss. You speak truly; Dragons Cove is hampered by its rule, an ineffective system which I have been gradually improving ever since I came to power. Unfortunately, our ancient knowledge and rich tradition comes with the price of tradition being exceptionally hard to break here. And so, you being a leader like I-” she could hardly let that comment go without reacting, could she- “I am sure that you will appreciate the coming of your people brings change to our island. This is an opportunity which I will not let go to waste. This war is detrimental to both our people; no doubt you will dismiss the power of Dragons Cove following your victory here, but given your people’s attitude to magic, I am sure you do not underappreciate what it may do to those who are unprepared.” She didn’t know for sure, but she suspected that the Surahnians had experienced magic before, if differently to how it was used on Dragons Cove; the fear and revulsion it caused in them had to have more cause than simply being the unknown. “If we bring peace… well, I am certain we could find an arrangement which would be advantageous to all.”

Lady Skeloph was bold, extremely so, even behind her level voice. She was not too loud, spoke with clarity and seemed calm, yet was not quiet either.
However, her suggestion was probably the most colourful thing in the room. He had intended to mention of the stones, but now she mentioned peace.
"You are correct. Traditions endurance must be used for a nation, the correct things instilled and the useless discarded...indeed, this island I see needs that, and it will find that, dear Lady. I will provide that for the people." He spoke as if being handed over the residents of Dragons' Cove, not a single mention of one of countless skirmishes, many battles or outright assaults.
"Surahnians know what is worth learning, we know that your Island is different, we will learn what is necessary, but do not take this as a sign of dilution of our own pride. Your people need not ask for peace from us, peace is inevitable. It is what will invariably follow in wake of my grand plans."
Indeed, who was there to wage war with, when they would all be united under his standard? "Then we will be strengthened by the absorption of such people. Of course, we have not intended this to distress." If only they did not resist, the fools. He could already see now however, that Lady Yeriss was angling for something rather contrary to what he wanted.

Despite Zartear’s initial agreement, Skeloph remained suspicious- and he had barely finished his sentence before she was proved right to be wary. It was unfortunate; she had truly thought that Zartear’s intelligence might approach her own, at least enough to be able to hold an interesting conversation. But no; already, she could see him falling in amongst the myriad powerful young men who had thought that all she needed was a little bit of charming and she would simply fall into their arms, bringing her power and wealth with her. None of them had maintained that belief for long when presented with her icy indifference. Of course, Zartear wasn’t intending to marry her, simply to take over her island; but the principle was the same. Always, men underestimated her based simply on her gender. That could be an issue, at times… but at others, she was more than able to play it to her advantage.

“I entirely believe that your pride is undiluted,” she replied dryly, one shaped eyebrow raising ever so slightly. Whether it was intentional or simply the result of outlandish arrogance, he had been rude to her, and she wasn’t at all shy to respond in kind. “I am glad you have at least picked up on the fact that Dragons Cove is not your homeland. I am afraid that you cannot simply learn how to deal with an entirely unfamiliar environment… if that was the case, then no doubt scholars would have overtaken us all by now.” The thought of Apollo- if not the most boring scholar she had met then certainly one of the most wearing to talk to- ruling Dragons Cove amused her for a brief moment. “Perhaps in a land where you rule your people like livestock, it is not such an issue, but I think you will find that not all will comply with your grand plans, whether or not you force them to submit to your rule.” Leaning back in her chair, she regarded him with a detatched sort of interest and the supreme confidence of somebody unused to being argued with.

What he did not expect, was for this woman to come back to him immediately with...disgruntlement? This was not the grovelling of a nation that knew it was to be destroyed if not swallowed whole. He was not one to let such words pass him, not in the company of others too, questioning his pride of all things! Implying fallibility in how he ruled...

"I am right to be proud however, Lady Skeloph, whatever you might see my people as, they are a strong people. They share in my pride, and we share in our victory together. Our triumph over new lands." Over weak ways, you are the one that needs teaching most. "Your people are soft and malleable. Whatever you might say of their spirits, do not fear, as I do not think that is a truth. They have been searching for guidance and not finding it, we will give that to them, and the better life, and they in return will give us their loyalty. All will become the best it can be, in the end, my Lady."
Zartear was almost erudite in how he spoke, respectful and so gracious in his soft and open handed gestures, even though his words were barely more than a hand wave to her suggestions.
She had gall, to approach him, and tell him to worry on a problem that had not presented itself, not even with the collapse of an entire part of the isle. What right did a weak nation have to tell him how to rule, when it was nothing more than rabbles of farmers at the front? Zartear would not let himself appear at all slighted by her words, he continued in his relaxed openness to her instead. Let her say more, and undo herself.

Casually dismissive, Skeloph flicked her fingers vaguely.
“Strong, perhaps. If you think that all natives of Dragons Cove are ‘soft and malleable’, however, it would be my delight to teach you the error of your thinking.” She’d been called many things, and few of them pleasant, but soft and malleable were not among them. Idiot man. All the same, if she was going to form some kind of alliance with him, then she needed to adjust her angle; much as she detested being insulted like this, she couldn’t retaliate to every one of his insufferable remarks.
“However… I am intrigued by your belief that all will turn out well. Simple faith, I suppose… Well, I do not know how much you understand of magic, Lord Straten, but Dragons Cove has recently become very unstable with the destruction of the lightning stone. Tell me, are there many strong mages among your people?”
She leaned forwards now, her eyes narrowing slightly as she waited for his answer. It would be very interesting to see how much he knew of the magic of the island; did he even realise how much danger there was now that the stone was gone? Skeloph had had one of her mages explain the potential consequences to her; this was an area in which she had the definite upper hand and, whether or not he realised it, Zartear needed the help of the natives. Unless they were hidden away in dungeons somewhere, Skeloph knew that there were next to no magic users amongst the Surahnians, let alone any mage who would even be able to contribute to replacing the lightning stone. Of course, nobody living today could match up to the Arch Mage either, but the people of Dragons Cove certainly came a lot closer to it than these foreigners. Her face a mask of polite concern, she scrutinised Zartear’s face for any hints as to his thoughts.

This woman had nerve, arriving here unannounced and within minutes claiming he had lessons to be learnt. She was completely brazen, in his eyes. Yet, if there was truly information to be gathered, he would hardly refuse it. He just also would not lower his own position to get it. Zartear tilted his head back the slightest when she asked of their mages. Such an answer did not belong to an enemy, and yet here she was, approaching as if a friend.

"Why would you tell us this? You then ask to know of capability. Forgive me Lady Skeloph, but you come to me as a foe, but you are behaving as a friend." An informant, but also a spy. Zartear would not be fooled so easily, or bluffed and forced to decide anything within only a night. Surahnians acted quickly, not rashly. "Such information to you would be a gift, for you to know more of our people, and pardon my offence to you Lady, but why might I trust you at all?" He still retained his eloquence even though the challenge was very direct. But then, snakes slithered and wound themselves uncomfortably to get away from direct attack. He could not compromise and he would not indulge the woman in games, or so he thought at the time.
"And now you speak of the consequences of the lightning stones destruction..."

Skeloph adjusted her posture slightly, moving to a more casual position, but she still stared intently at Zartear as she spread one hand, replying,
“Why should I not tell you of it? It is common knowledge; I hardly have anything to gain from being secretive about it. Naturally, leaders such as us cannot afford to be rash about our decisions… but that is not to say that we cannot have some degree of cooperation. It does not have to come with unrestricted trust. I take no offence from you, but I would not like to present myself as a foe; our peoples may fight, but here we are, conversing politely and respectfully.” To an extent, anyway. “No, I would much rather come as a potential ally… for that is how I see you, Lord Zartear. The Surahnian people certainly have the potential to enrich Dragons Cove; what remains to be seen is whether that potential will be squandered in war or fulfilled in an alliance.” She left a slight pause as she steepled her fingers, sweeping her gaze briefly across the table and wondering why he hadn’t yet offered her refreshment. Perhaps that wasn’t social protocol for the Surahnians… or perhaps he simply wanted her to leave as soon as possible. Well, he’d be disappointed if that was the case.

“But of course,” she continued after a moment, “whichever you choose, the lightning stone is an issue which must be addressed. I feel I could provide you with substantial aid in that respect; if you would rather that our factions remained separate, however, then that is naturally your decision.” Smiling graciously, she continued to watch his face, interlacing her fingers and resting her chin against her hands.

That made Zartear smile. The Lady was very well composed and spoke in an effortlessly diplomatic way. If he were perhaps less the man he was, he would have relaxed himself and enjoyed her company. Zartear was not one for giving 'trust', however, sometimes it was useful.
"A potential ally." He recited, following her eyes to the table to the cups there. No, he did not intend to let her drink just yet, she wasn't damn well moving in here of her own volition, or taking any slices of his territory through an "alliance".

He mulled it over visibly, looking up blankly as his mind chewed over the idea. "What of the lightning stone?" He asked, then knowing he should have been perhaps a little more diplomatic, he corrected himself. "That is...what is it that you offer, in regards to the lightning stone, Lady Yeriss? The best alliance is one born through equal giving and taking. I would like to know of what it is you are offering New Surahnia. As you might have noticed, I am not one for games." A true lie. "I hope you will also take no offence in my keenness for understanding. I will surely give you answers just as readily. It is after all, in both our interests to be fair with one another."
Else your nation will not be taken, but annihilated. He did not yet know of the fall of the council, but it is hard to say whether it would have changed his mind at all or not.
"Please continue Lady Yeriss, this may be the first sensible proposition I have heard since the beginning of this skirmish with your nation."

Without allowing her smile to falter, Skeloph simply regarded Zartear for a moment longer after he had finished speaking. Untruths dropped from this man’s lips without hesitation; no doubt he lied and exaggerated so routinely that he scarcely noticed it anymore. Equality and straight talking without games was, no doubt, the exact opposite of what this man might want from an alliance with her. She was in no place to go looking down on him for this, though; it was hardly as if she was much different herself, though she tended to speak the letter of the truth if not the spirit of it.
“Yes,” she said simply after a beat had passed in silence, broken only by the discussions of the others in the hall. “It would indeed be prudent for us to talk openly. Certainly I am glad to hear that you will answer my questions ‘readily’. But I digress; the lightning stone. Shall I take it that you know nothing of the magic on the island? It will make explaining simpler.

“These stones limit the huge natural magic of Dragons Cove, restraining it so that it does not cause chaos and damage to the island. With the destruction of a stone…” She shrugged elegantly, spreading one long-fingered hand and throwing bits of light across the room as her rings reflected the light. “They have been in place since living memory. The consequences would be catastrophic. No being currently living on the island is capable of withstanding that level of magical power.” From what she had heard of the Surahnians, unrestrained and unpredictable magical chaos ought to be their worst nightmare.

OOC: Let me know if she's saying anything about the stones etc which wouldn't be known to a highly educated mage Smile

OOC| Oh you know me Artel, why would you ever need to ask? Razz

IC| Admitting weaknesses openly was not something a wise ruler should do when faced with his enemy. In fact, it was blatantly stupid. Yet the lack of prowess Surahnians had amongst their people was hardly a secret to the natives in their brief and violent contacts. Even if they were so magically inclined, how could they know of the stones, unique to such an island?
"I would prefer that you assume such a thing, for the purpose of explaining." As ambiguous as possible. Even if magical implements were minimal in the ranks for now...who said they need stay that way? He knew Surahnians were a difficult breed however, and making them come around to the prospect of using what they currently held as superstition would be no small task, if he saw its benefits.
"Tell me of everything you know, if the consequences are so catastrophic. I would be...a poor sort of man to not wish to know these things and how they happen. And how you believe you might be able to help me so." He breathed a light sigh, briefly wandering off to his thoughts as he looked away from her, then back to her, his eyes caught by the opulence she wore. "The results are one thing...averting others and dealing with what is at hand is another entirely. I would hope you can shed some light. Lady Yeriss, I would be much obliged if you were to do so."
Playing games in fact, was his specialty.

At Zartear’s attempt to skate over the fact that he knew next to nothing of magic, Skeloph felt a small wave of satisfaction. There was no denying that he had the upper hand in terms of military power- not that she would ever admit it as plain as that, least of all to him- but she held the advantage where magic was concerned, and that gave her an edge. After all, swords and spears existed both in Surahnia and Dragons Cove, but in Surahnia magic seemed to be taboo if it was present at all. She could not imagine a society without magic- what was to be done if the ruler fell sick to something which could not be treated by mundane methods? Money and power were all well and good, but if you could not use them to secure your position… well, it had to make things different.
At this thought, the idea of simply eliminating Zartear crossed her mind, one which she had dismissed as impractical previously. Naturally he would have tasters for all his food, but perhaps a slow-acting poison which would not be noticed at first… any noble in Dragons Cove would be able to call a healer upon noticing symptoms, but Zartear may not have access to such effective cures as magic. And there were many other ways to magically dispose of somebody…

Well, she didn’t need to resort to such methods just yet. Hopefully she would be able to bring the man around to an alliance. She interlaced her fingers, leaning back in her chair once more with a serene smile which betrayed none of her thoughts.
“If you are so keen to hear what I have to say… Well, it is difficult to predict exactly what would happen. Naturally in the past, the governors of Dragons Cove have managed to prevent a disaster of this scale occurring.” She very much doubted the High Council would have been able to stop it even if they had still held power over the Racksom region- after all, they hadn’t even known Maledictus Eice’s intentions until it was too late- but the fact remained that almost as soon as the Surahnians had taken over, this had happened. Hopeless.

“Magic will become unpredictable, difficult to use; that much is a certainly. Moreover my mages suspect that simply abstaining from using magic will not be a solution; it is unfortunately likely that the lack of stones could cause unpredictable outbursts of magic from any and all magic users, not to mention odd natural occurrences. I do not know if you have discovered any of them yet, but there are many naturally magical sites on Dragons Cove, which could certainly be strangely affected. And this does not begin to touch on all the magic which is already in place… there is no telling, for example, what might happen to a building whose structure has been magically strengthened. Undoubtedly the destruction of the stone will lead to calamity of the worst kind; totally unpredictable. As for how I can be of aid… well, great magical strength is needed to create new stones, which would be the only permanent remedy. And in the meantime, there are certain precautions which can be taken by those well-educated in the theory of magic. Precautions which I have, of course, already taken where possible.”

Somewhat regrettably, the woman made a convincing argument. It was true that his nation was ignorant to magic, many feared it, and he himself was skeptical of it. But there was no denying that they would have to face and use it at some point, or be destroyed by it. Unfortunately, this Lady seemed to know that and was happy enough to make it clear to him too. But, whatever else was on her mind evaded Zartear and that was possibly the worst part.

"That is very wise of you, it is a shame then that no other precautions were taken on this island." He paused to take a sip from his near drink, a bright and amused smile coming quickly to him, his eyes creased pleasantly. "I would not imply that to be your fault. Though I thank whomever neglected anything in the way of security; it has made way for us to improve it now. Just as you might improve our own knowledge, as you claim."
So magical precautions were one thing, but what good was that when all else of the infrastructure was pathetic?
He knew he would have to be cautious, for all his cheerful jest over a matter that had torn apart every inhabitant's life since his arrival, magic was an unknown quantity to him. The true danger he faced; gods knew there was nothing else to fear.
It spoke volumes when the best effort the land could give in return was a mob of dragons razing a village, and not even dragons from the main nation of the island. Only rogues.

"You know, honoured Lady, that trust is a difficult thing to build, and a fast thing to lose. You make a very convincing few points, but I have to now ask myself, how can I really know any of this without a true demonstration of your benevolent intent? I would expect the same of myself to you, to my Officials, my people, to anyone."

“It certainly is a shame,” Skeloph agreed with a charming smile to match Zartear’s, her earrings flashing as they caught the light with the slight movement of her head. “Would that the Guardians had not failed in their task; I fear they will be of small aid to us in restoring the stones now. Instead, I believe that task shall fall to us, Lord Straten. I am sure that we will be able to build a stronger nation for the future in the aftermath of these current events.”

She took a moment to ponder his next questions, her eyes tracking absently around the room and noting the sideways glances many of the Surahnians threw in their direction. No doubt they were curious as to what their king had to discuss so earnestly with a native woman; well, let them wonder.
“I would think you a fool to trust a stranger at once, naturally,” she said, her eyes lingering a moment on those few natives she could see seated among the invaders. “But I certainly hope we can build a strong and dependable relationship over time; I feel it would be most beneficial to both our causes. You bring up a very good point; I would be delighted to give you a gift, a token of my good intentions.” She had considered presenting the man with protective material from the Charkoras Isles, but given how she was still toying with the idea of having him assassinated, she didn’t think it sensible to go giving him a means of protecting himself. Besides, she had no intention of telling him that such a thing existed before a firm alliance had been worked out; giving away all your bargaining material before the barter had been struck was plainly unwise.

“There is a most skilled mage in my service who lives in Racksom,” she now explained. “Providing your armies have not killed him since his last report to me- which I think most unlikely given his talents- I should be more than glad for him to train a man of your choosing in the arcane arts. I would suggest that you choose a small selection of trusted candidates- well trusted, hard working and scholarly men- and allow him to choose from among them based on whichever one shows the greatest aptitude for working magic, but naturally the decision is up to you. I feel this would be an ideal way for us to begin sharing knowledge with your people; what do you say?” Naturally the Surahnian candidate would be trained with a select set of useful but non-threatening skills- hopefully none of the men Zartear chose would be particularly talented, but if any were she could simply instruct her mage to select one of more mediocre talents. It would have to be carefully handled, but Zartear would be unable to deny the value of this gift. The only question which remained was that of what he would offer her in return.

Zartear spoke openly, and for once, clearly with what was on his mind.
"I have never heard anyone speak so candidly. And on such a matter as this." Alliances and bonds were slow processes that became strong gradually, or were rushed and frail things. Apparently she wanted to offer everything and with certainty.
She humoured his request, a good action on her part, he thought. Anything less and he would have grown bored of her in an instant, tired of her tattle and ready to throw her out. Instead she continued to amuse him for a while, so he allowed her to stay in his presence, despite whatever odd thoughts others in the room might have. If nothing else, he had to maintain his act to prevent them spreading words and imaginative speculation on what Skeloph offered and how he himself responded.

"A welcome token indeed, Lady Yeriss." He nodded slowly and politely. Zartear would not be rearranging his plans for this woman, and he was far from won over by what she said. The time to test her would come naturally, no hastiness to put her to it required. If she was a fraud, it would fast be known and she would then be killed unceremoniously. Unfortunately, it was not the diplomatic thing to reiterate this to her, but then, she should have known anyway before making such a bold trespass into his 'lair'.
For as long as she was in the palace, or even in the land of New Surahnia, she was under his thumb.

"I can only wonder on the things that are to be learnt. This knowledge is a rarity amongst our people, but it need not remain that way. Even beyond the mage you speak of, it seems you yourself have just as much worth in your words." He cocked his head to one side, briefly pursing his lips in thought. "Lady, I hope that you staying here will not disturb your plans too much." And he spoke the words in such a benevolent manner, it was almost as if he had not just ordered her to be fixed in the palace, Zartear having no intention of letting her wander away at her own leisure. Not until he knew more than he did now. She gave him some spools of knowledge, but the rest was a mystery...one he was inquisitive about and the more she had spoken the less he felt he understood.
"My gift to you, is hospitality only I can afford to give others." He smiled pleasantly, with a gentle lilt about his palm as he waved it to the number of people about him, his eyes remaining fixed on Lady Yeriss. "There is nothing like Surahnian hospitality; you find yourself in good hands on that count. Your staying arrangements will be made,” And he turned his gaze then, more seriously, to one of the servants. That look alone was enough to tell them what needed to be done, and following this they were quick to leave and make preparations. “And then let us see if during this time we can share a few more words. I feel as if you have very, very much to say that would interest me.”
Or perhaps, just enough words to give him the rationale to make an example of her in the execution square.

Skeloph shrugged elegantly, folding slim hands in her lap.
“I see nothing to be gained from attempting to shy away from this matter. If we do not confront this issue, there is no denying that it will be the death of us all.” For once, Skeloph was speaking the truth; ignoring the issue of the stone would not benefit anyone.

Zartear seemed to take her offer well, all things considered; perhaps there was hope for them to work together after all. His own ‘gift’ was rather less than she had hoped for, given that she could perfectly well have stayed in the High Council’s building a while longer, though she would have assumed housing another noble when asked to was something to be taken for granted. Then again, she had heard that this man was no more than a self-proclaimed king; a commoner in truth. He could hardly be expected to have the refined manners of a born noble. Either way, staying in the palace would certainly have its advantages- where better to educate herself on these Surahnians than at the heart of their court?
“I certainly hope that we will be able to share much knowledge between our peoples,” she said with insincere warmth. “On the contrary, I had half expected to stay here, given what I have heard about how hospitable your kind people are. I thank you most warmly.” A flick of her fingers summoned one of the young girls who stood uneasily behind her chair to scurry forwards; a murmured sentence later, she had run off to dispatch the carriage and fetch Skeloph’s possessions. If Zartear had expressed such a forceful wish for her to stay, then stay she would.

“Naturally I trust that all the necessities will be provided for me; I do not mean to insult your hospitality, you understand, I merely have gowns and other such personal possessions which I will have need of.” Smiling prettily at him once again, she silently dared him to give her any other than the best chambers. Such an insult could not be borne lightly, for even an uneducated pretender of a king would have to realise that guests of such a high standing had to be treated with respect. In fact, she wondered that he still had not offered her refreshment- she had experienced greater snubs in her time, of course, but never from any more than merchants or other such commonfolk. She was beginning to seriously question how this man had ever become king- how could anyone so uncultured garner enough respect to be deferred to as ruler?

Once again, all he could do was agree with a nod on what she spoke, which was an unusual feeling for him, to easily agree with anybody. At least there didn't need to be deception in everything that was said as the few grains of truth slipped through here and there. Frankly he wasn't sure if it made him comfortable or not, so used to spending his time with the liars of the society of loyalists.
"Good." He said, his manner short but pleased, with a decisiveness in how he then flatly rested his right palm on the armrest of the chair. That was her sorted for a while. "If I see that we both speak together fairly and honestly in days or further to come, and I hope you would not be insulted to hear such hesitance from me, then I will withhold no luxury for the sake of a pleasurable stay for you." He smiled then more apparently, his eyes creasing again as he did so...or perhaps they narrowed in suspicion. Whoever she was, she was prepared and capable enough, even if only as an actress.
"It is a good thing you knew you might be staying, Lady Yeriss. It would make me a poor host to have my guests feel closer to captives, even if they do come from my enemy. Your intentions are benevolent however, so we can look beyond that."

He then spoke his further orders, now with a clear conviction in his mind.
"Show Lady Yeriss her room, and find a meal befitting of myself for her for this evening, late though it may be. I trust such a distance to travel would make any weary. Time and fortune allowing, I should also like to have one prepared for us too in the next week, when I will find time briefly away from my duties. Do not bore the Lady with prattle in the mean time. For unless I see any reason otherwise, she is an esteemed guest in Surahnia and must be entertained and cared for as such."

He then rose from the comfort of his chair.
"...Provided Lady Yeriss does not object to such propositions?" He said, his voice as gentle and diplomatic as it might ever be for a man with such an intimidating reputation and extravagant appearance as his.

”I certainly hope that we can have many more such discussions,” Skeloph agreed, her smile stretching ever wider, showing a brief glimpse of teeth. “And I can assure that I will not at all feel myself to be a prisoner in your home. After all… I do not come as your enemy, but rather as an equal who fosters a heartfelt desire to become an ally.” Remaining demurely silent as Zartear turned to speak to a servant, she flashed a warm look of thanks at the man as he bowed and made ready to leave, before returning her gaze to Zartear. “How could I object to such generosity? No, I thank you; a rest would indeed be welcome after my travels; we moved swiftly to reach you as soon as we were able.” Let him think her weak and tired, vulnerable, if he was foolish enough to do so.

For a moment, she pondered asking Zartear for a Surahnian maid. Certainly it would be beneficial to learn of their customs from such a girl, and it would be easy enough to feed Zartear any false information she desired through ‘private’ conversations overheard… but no, there was too much risk to her real privacy. She planned no conspiracy- or at least, she planned it only as a backup plan- but all the same, it was best if those closest to her were loyal only to her. These Surahnians presented a front of being loyal to a fault, but she didn’t doubt for a moment that she would be able to find some disgruntled and slighted serving girl to attend to her and teach her more of the Surahnian language and culture. The officials here seemed to go through as many women as any other men in power; there must be more than a few girls about whose dreams of being consort to a king or general had come tantalisingly close to reality before being shattered as their lover grew bored of them and moved on. If she could become fluent in Surahnian without Zartear’s knowledge, so much the better- feigning ignorance and using a translator was a small price to pay for the possibility of overhearing discussions the Surahnians believed she could not understand.

“Please,” she now said, feigning a dainty yawn which was covered by a raised hand. “Do show me to my chambers. Girls… if you could be so kind as to ensure my luggage is brought to me when it arrives from the Council house, and find somebody to draw bath water for me?” Baffled by Skeloph’s newfound spirit of kindness, her young maids bobbed curtseys and scampered away to do her bidding, leaving Skeloph to bid farewell to Zartear and depart with the Surahnian servant and Anakaria, her personal maid.
