Subject: Kat) Can YOU stand the Heat? (Teggers Fri May 04, 2012 8:20 pm

Setting: Volcane Belt. The largest volcano of the belt is rumbling and grumbling. However, it isn't always an active volcano you have to worry about in the belt. Humans beware as the volcano comes alive with dragons.

Plot: At the moment, we go popcorn style.

Volith grumbling as the other dragons stirred around him. The stupid female to his left was annoying as she tried to get his attention. He unfolded his large wings and growled deep in his throat. "Go away," he snarled. He was met with a hurt sound, but she left him alone. Finally he could have peace and quiet. Although... As soon as he curled himself back up in the warmth that surrounded him inside the volcano, he felt his stomach growl. He snarled and pushed himself up. He flapped his wings as he pushed himself up through the lava and away from the cove that all his breed slept on. His scales burned with fire as he pushed himself out into the air. His entire body on fire. He was a Volcane Longhorn, and being on fire didn't bother him at all.

Once in the air, Volith flapped his wings harder, rising out of the volcano's top. He parted his jaws and roared as loud as possible to the ground below. He felt like a king of his breed, and perhaps he could be, if they had any need of such a thing. He let lose a jet of blazing white fire from his parted jaw, letting it slide down the side of the volcano and then dove down the side of the mountain. In the sands nearby he would find his dinner. Assuming it was so late in the night. He honestly wasn't sure, it was always sunny here. Hardly ever a night to speak of. Or perhaps he just couldn't tell under the lava. His wings flared suddenly as something with pale skin caught his eye in the distance. "Softskins," he snarled. If there was one thing he hated more than anything, it was the pale softskins.

Llarria walked confidently between the smallest, constantly-smoking volcanoes of the belt, clutching a very long, fabric pouch between her teeth. Although she had cooled her skin as much as possible, so she looked like a dimly glowing rock rather than a creature of pure lava, the fabric was smouldering, ready to catch fire. Stopping suddenly, she tapped a nearby rock with her nose, and hooked one claw around a jagged corner in the side of a small, dead volcano. A slab of rock rolled back, revealing a dimly lit horde of glittering gold. Hers. She emptied the sack out carefully, making sure she didn’t touch the precious coins and melt them accidentally. A few more gold pieces rolled out of the long pouch (long to stop her melting those too) and joined the pile. She liked human money – it made her feel like a queen to stash so much of it. Finishing that last job (she’d had to dispose of a man that had annoyed another man – she didn’t really understand or care about the details) had left her one hundred pieces richer, so she was in a good mood.

She left the hollowed out rock, and rolled the stone back across the door, heating her skin up to melt the rock into a strong seal. Content, she set off through the volcanoes again, letting her skin glow and melt as it pleased now that she was back home. Overhead, she saw something move, and looked up. A shadow fell across the sky – huge even from where she stood on the ground. How interesting – she didn’t know there were any other dragons around here. She changed direction, hoping to get a better view when the dragon landed.

Volith growled as he headed in the softskin's direction. He could easily been seen as soon as he left the belt of volcanoes and entered into the sands below them. The head of the sun felt good on his back as his scales glittered. His eyes completely focused on the camp he was heading towards. Once he was close enough he shot out a jet of white flame that landed on the tents the softskins slept in. They erupted into flame, and the couple of softskins that stood outside them, with their backs towards the danger jumped and turned to look at the dragon that's wings flared as he landed in the soft sand. He drew his lips back in a growl, as well as a smirk. He found his dinner, and this was going to be more fun than hunting smaller game.

Volith really didn't give the stunned softskins much time to realize what was going on before he snaked his tail out and wrapped them in it. The tip on the end held out like a knife about to stab. There was a male and female, not much of a dinner for the huge dragon, but it would do for now. The female was crying, so he started with the male. His tail embedded into the male's chest, and for the female he slowly wrapped his tail tighter around her till she was crushed. He dropped the two mangled bodies then and went about setting the rest of their camp on fire before he settled down in the sand to eat. Which honestly wouldn't take all that long, except he was savoring their taste. Eating more slowly than he normally would. The burning softskin items around him.

The flying dragon was faster than Llarria, so she didn’t reach the place he had landed in until after he’d torched the whole place. She walked calmly into the devastated camp, letting her blistering skin turn the sand at her feet to glass. It lent her footprints an almost magical appearance in the sand, which she enjoyed. She cleared her throat loudly, looking at the dragon. Up close she recognised him as a volcane longhorn – impressive since there were so few of them around. “Nice barbeque you’ve got going here.” She commented, looking around. “Here, I haven’t seen you around here before – what’s your name?” she asked, completely ignoring the fact that he was busy eating as she settled down on the sand. The sand melted as she touched it, leaving a nice smooth, shiny hollow for her to lie in and observe. She only really needed to hunt once a week, and she had been out just yesterday, so she was quite happy to just let the other dragon finish his meal.

Volith didn't look up when the other dragon approached. If it had the guts enough to try and take his meal, it would be met with a very angry reception. Of course, the dragon only appeared to want to talk. Not uncommon being that Volith was a kind of rare breed. Still, he had no intention of interaction until he was done with his meal. So instead of figuring out who this visitor was, he merely sniffed, confirmed the dragon was indeed a dragon, and then finished eating. Once he was done, he snaked his tongue around his maw, and licked his clawed paw. Sure that he'd gotten all of his meal down, he picked his head up and twitched his tail that was curled around his one side.

The dragon in front of him was a Lava dragon. A breed that he didn't often run into, for he honestly wasn't out of the volcano much. To be honest, he didn't run into any dragons often, unless he was hunting for dinner, and only then did he care to search for company. To eat of course. Still, he was satisfied, and this dragon hadn't tried to steal from him. It also didn't look appetizing to him. Any dragon that could stand the fire like he could was a friend to him. Well, as much of a friend as Volith could consider another to be. "My name is Volith," he growled in as friendly a way as he could. Contact with other dragons not his own was rare, and he mostly ended up scaring them away. "We live in the Volcanos, and normally only come out when one of us is hungry. Being we can eat the contents of the volcano, it's more like if one of us wants variety, or to get away." He glanced briefly in the direction of his home and resettled his wings. "I've grown tired of them, and decided to get air." Volith returned his attention to the Lava dragon. "And who might you be? And why do you roam these lands and call them home?" he asked.

“Well, it’s nice to meet you then, Volith.” Llarria replied, bowing her head just a little as a respectful greeting. She listened with interest as he spoke, nodding occasionally as she realised that her own breed lived in much the same conditions, if a little closer to the ground. As he turned his attention back to her, however, she held her head up proudly and smiled.

“My name is Llarria, and with skin that can melt rock, we may as well live around volcanoes,” She laughed, “but I see what you mean about needing to get out into the air. It’s nice out here.” She was wary of admitting her reason for leaving the fiery Volcane Belt as often as she did, in case Volith’s dispassion for humans spread beyond those that had made up his dinner.

I’m surprised we haven’t crossed paths before, mind you. It’s not all that far to my cave, and I don’t exactly stay inside all day.” She smiled, showering little drops of molten rock and sand with a flick of her tail. She always liked being able to do that – it made up for the inconvenience of not being able to walk on certain kinds of rock. She wandered dimly what magic Volith had, as she knew that his must be at least similar to her own, but decided not to ask – not until they had gotten to know each other a little better anyway.

“So, what are your plans for the rest of the day anyway? Now that you’ve eaten, that is.” She added with a faint smirk. She would be fairly bored until her next job came in, so she had time to kill.

Volith huffed, and a stream of smoke came from his nostrils. "I'm not surprised at all that we haven't met. This isn't my home, the volcano is," he said with a slight smart-ass smirk. That was his way, being a sarcastic jackass. Perhaps that was why he didn't really get along with the others of his breed. That, or it was because he liked to eat humans, and they didn't give a crap either way. Guess it didn't matter anyways. Turning his unblinking black eyes from his paws, making sure he got all the remains off of them, back to the dragon known as Llarria. He supposed he should have made a comment about how it was nice to meet her, but that wasn't his style.

Although, Volith was surprised by her question. Why would this dragon want to know what he was doing for the rest of the day. Sitting up, Volith extended his two colored wings, and as he stretched, his scales glistened like there was molten lava moving underneath them. Like he himself was the side of a volcano that had just erupted. Honestly, on a side note, he had a way of loving to admire his own scales. "Why do you ask?" he finally answered with a question of his own. He blinked once, and refolded his wings for the third time against his sides neatly. His tail twisted from around his clawed front feet to elevated into the air behind him. The sharp pointed end twitching slightly.

Ah, so Volith was the sarcastic sort. Perfect. She didn’t like to stand on occasion, and as she wasn't exactly refined it was nice to know she could relax. “The belt is full of volcanoes, which I know well enough because I lair in one myself.” She pointed out with a grin. The other dragon seemed rather bust admiring himself for a moment, so she gave him a moment. She wasn’t impressed by his oh-so-shiny scales herself, since their beauty came from the likeness of lava that they held, and she grew sick of the sight of the glowing stuff after a while.

His question almost caught her by surprise, but not quite. “Why? Because I’m interested. I don’t know about you, but I prefer the company of those large enough for me not to step on. Besides, I’m bored.” She explained. Ugh, his constant fidgeting was just a little irritating. However, it did make her notice that he was a very angular dragon – all sharp points and shiny scales. Her own ponderous, heavy frame was probably a little sturdier, but she wasn't fond of her own blunt tail and fin-shaped horns and ridges. She did flick her own tail t mirror his, her mouth drawn into a half-smile as she watched for his response.

Volith sighed to himself. This was going to turn into a long drawn out conversation. Which to be honest was something that he wasn’t used to, and something he didn’t particularly care for. So, time for some more smart–assed remarks to fill his time. “If you must know,” he said as he picked up one claw to give it a more thorough look over, “I had planned to burn down the entire village nearby and to eat to my heart’s content. Then I was thinking of taking a bath in the closest river, and going for a lovely walk through the trees.” Putting his paw back down, he looked straight at Llarria. “You know, the usual,” he added in his gruff voice.

In his head, he was trying not to laugh. Volith hated humans, yes. So the first part was actually something he would do, if he felt like it. To be honest, he hadn’t actually had anything to do today besides eat and return home. Nothing really to do. What could he do about the scum of the world anyways? He could always think about how much fun it would be to destroy the humans for good, those rotten creatures that had taken over the island. Also, what fun to hear the last breath of those weak minded dragons that had sided with the humans. All those that were not free dragons-free from the soft side for humans anyways- deserved to be destroyed.

“Wow,” Llarria quirked an eyebrow, “sounds like a busy day. But burning down a whole village seems a bit pointless, doesn’t it? I don’t know, not my sort of thing at least. But then again, I don’t breathe fire.” She had burnt things to ash before, usually her marks, but it was difficult, and involved raising her skin temperature to boiling point. It wasn’t uncomfortable, but it took a lt of energy, and it was easier to simply sit on something to squash the life out of it than wait for her body to heat up sufficiently.

“So you’re non too fond of humans then?” Llarria asked, stating the obvious. An ever increasing number of dragons seemed to hate the two-legs now. She had come across followers of that odd new group – malicious ace or something was it? – during one or two of her latest jobs, but she wasn’t about so side with them. Dragons didn’t make gold coins, and she did love gold. It was so much less interesting as a molten puddle than those shiny disks were. Show her a dragon as skilled as a human coin-maker and she may reconsider.

Volith gave pause to her words. “Pointless?” he asked confused. He couldn’t see how getting rid of a village of those puny humans could be pointless at all. A lot of work, yes, but pointless? “Who said anything about fire anyways,” he asked amused. “Chomping them as they run screaming and then jumping on their little inferior homes is the best part about the whole thing. Then you can just use magma to finish off the remains.” He seemed very pleased with the whole idea, as well as the mental images he was playing in his head.

Her next words made the dragon laugh. It was deep and sounded a bit rusty. Volith hadn’t laughed in a long time. “Fond of humans... No, I can’t say that I am. They came to these lands, they set up their buildings, they hunt us, they use us for food. Be them not all like that or not, they do not belong on these lands. The only ones I can stand are the ones who only travel and do not interfere with those of us who live on this island. So long as they vanish when they’ve finished seeing the sights. As for those of our kind who side with them… they deserve the same thing.” As he spoke, his voice grew steadily darker, exposing a hint that he may have had a bad past with humans.

“And what of you? How do you view these two-legged intruders?” he asked. His eyes showed a glint of true interest. “I do understand not all of our kind view them as I do, and as I am rather content with this conversation, I do not plan harm upon you. A fight may be interesting, but it’s long and gets boring to fight someone who you’ve made pleasantries with.” His tail flicked to emphasis how boring that would be.

“There’s always fire, or there is for me anyway.” She smiled, ignoring the fact that the description of this violent rampage made her slightly uncomfortable. She didn’t necessarily like humans, but she didn’t like killing them unless she was paid either.

Volith’s response made Llarria kind of wish she hadn’t asked about humans at all. His voice sounded scary, and she had a feeling she may have struck a nerve there unintentionally. She had to give the right response to that, of course, or else she could end up in an uncomfortable position. Volith was about her size, so she wasn't intimidated as such, but she didn’t want to end up in a fight either. He said that wouldn’t happen, but she was pretty sure that could be changeable if she said totally the wrong thing.

“Well, I don’t hate them quite as much as you, apparently,” she said truthfully, “but no, I’m no fan. They’re funny when they shout.” That was all true actually, but she decided not to bring up the fact that she mostly worked for humans to stock her horde of gold. “I just prefer not to bother with them if I can help it.”
