Other

History: Like Maivaisia, Talos grew up in a close-knit family and was raised on the importance of keeping their family bonds tight. After all, the only thing that their dirt-poor and unlucky family had was each other. The spring and the falls for the Estoen family were spent planting and harvesting, but during the summer and the winter Talos and his older brother Arthurlur would often go out with their father Yorin to bring in some extra food from the bounty of the woods. Talos' great-great-grandfather on his mother's side settled the avian clan in Turich, and as family lore holds, was a well-respected scholar from the Academy. If that was even true however, he certainly did not pass down his knowledge to future generations. Yorin's side of the family were hunters and gatherers, and he brought his knowledge of forestry to the table when he married into the Estoen clan. His children benefited from Yorin's woodland experience. Even if they couldn't afford meat, he could always find a way to put venison on the table. Talos inherited his father's skills, and has honed his archery as a means of survival. Like all his other siblings, he became used to a hard life of labor, but they managed.

While growing up, the Estoen clan and the Serenoa family had been deadlocked in a bitter rivalry for generations. He took the fight very seriously, and was very patriotic about the whole thing, often leading "raids" against the Serenoa compound. As he got older however, he became very restless and became one of the first Estoen children to leave their hometown of Turich to strike out on his own. His bowmanship became a central factor to his survival out on the road. Not only did he use it to hunt for food, but it became a means of defense if he were ever attacked by brigands and other low-lives. Out on the road, he developed skills that he never would have gotten back on the farm, but still returned to his family often to check up on them.

On one of his visits home he found Lena hurt in the woods and after getting her some medical attention, the two quickly became inseparable. After some misadventures and marauding, they became loves of a sort and returned to Turich. Upon arriving, however, the hostilities between the Estoens and Serenoas finally erupted and in a twist of fate it was revealed to Talos that he wasn't born an Estoen, but had been sired by one of the Serenoa family. Kol's father, Hyten, had maintained a brief affair with Talos' mother before being killed by Yorin once the betrayal had been found out, mistaking his wife's secret lover as a rapist. During this time, Arthulur was killed by Hyo, one of Kol's younger siblings, and Talos discovered his talent for hexing, accidentally using the newly discovered ability on his younger half-sister Mai and Kol, essentially forcing them to commit double suicide. Full details of their exploits can be found
>here<.

Once the messy business of his heritage had been settled, Talos and Lena settled near the coast in the Tarz region with their daughter Oriana. Upon a visit back to Turich, however, he was witness to the call for help from Rilos, a messenger of the Defenders of Dragons Cove after the sacking of Quinsilla. Leaving their daughter in his family's caring hands, Talos and Lena picked up their weapon and joined the fray in Racksom. They found the city to be nearly deserted, but those who had remained were determined to defend it. He spent two weeks trying to fortify the city, then lost spectacularly against Zartear's invading forces. Currently, he is at the Everbridge about to go on a mission for Atleon and the efforts of the DDC.

Quick Facts: Talos no longer has a horrendous hick accent, unlike the rest of his family. Traveling around a lot and being with Lena at pretty much all hours of the day has slowly but surely beaten the accent out of him. When listening to him, it is undeniable that he still carries his accent but it's not nearly as noticeable as the rest of his family. Carries a strange birthmark on his outer left thigh, very faded, but slightly visible. It’s about the size of the palm of his hand, and if one stares long enough, they can make out a pair of wings in a “yin-yang” type of fashion, a stylized feathered wing taking up the “yin” side, and a bat-like wing taking the place of “yang”. This birthmark was present on all people born of Serenoa blood before the legendary curse that their family was under was lifted by Talos. Members of the family that were born with this mark still bear it, but the curse that was associated with the mark is no longer applicable to the families.

Turichian Lore

The citizens of Turich are a simple folk who rely mainly on themselves to support their society. They are an extremely remote village, cut off almost entirely from the rest of the Cove by the natural geography that surrounds this tiny village. To the north are the frigid ice plains, populated only with unfathomable beasts and madmen, the steep cliffs and a wild sea to the east, a thick evergreen forest to the south, and mountains to the west so tall that they are covered in snow for the majority of the year. For all of it's remote nature, however, Turich does have some trade up and down the River Tarz to exchange goods with the slightly larger town of Tarz and the village of Harglen. Because of their remote society and nature as farmers and trappers, Turich has developed a belief system unique to the village, though some of their customs are shared with the distant town of Shayenne and the tribes of the Ice Plains.

Culture in Turich
The people of the Ice Plains and the native villagers of Turich have a long relationship of a sort that is mostly mutually beneficial to both parties. The residents of Turich are a strange mix of the "normal" culture from the south lands and the harsh living style of those from the Ice Plains. The result is that they have some highlander tendencies that are expressed through their festivals with events such as log-throwing and obstacle course running. Though Turich is mostly known for its farming, the village boasts a high percentage of hunters and gatherers as well. The people of the Ice Plains often visit during trading seasons, and when the two people mix together, the Ice Plainers often leave behind a number of bastards because they do not believe in marriage or marriage systems. The Ice Plains Tribespeople and the Turichians are on rather friendly terms, but no man from the Ice Plains Tribes would ever claim a Turichian bastard, as they consider their Turichian "cousins" (so to speak) to be too soft for their harsh climate, and by the time the children are old enough to train, they are used to their Southlander ways. Bastard children are so common in Turich that it is barely a social stigma anymore, and they are just another facet of society.

Deities of Turich
Ariold: God and Overseer of Just Rulership and Judgement. The village elders and law keepers are strongly allied to Ariold, and all criminal trials are processed under his watchful eye. In such a small remote and wild village, however, vigilante justice is not uncommon. It is said that Ariold will favor those in the right, but will abandon those that use his name for their own means and misfortune and injustice will visit them often as a consequence. The symbol of Ariold is often depicted as a hawk holding a sword and a scroll in its claws.

Llomyra: Goddess of fertility, planting and the Sun. The patron god of women, Llomyra is one of the heavenly triad who breathe life into the people and the earth of Turich. Her domain is over the soil, and the farmers will pray to her at planting time to ask favor for their crops to come in the following year. To please Llomyra and earn her favor, many songs are sung over the fields that are to be planted, and a small sacrifice of the blood of the farmer shows that just as Llomyra is dedicated to the soil, so too is the one tilling it. The symbol of Llomyra is depicted as a lily inside of a sun.

Arynimen: God of the Harvest, moon, and virility. The patron god of men, Arynimen is one of the heavenly triad who breathe life into the people and earth of Turich. His domain is over the crops and all fruit-bearing plants, and farmers will pray to him at the harvest and thank him for the bounty that sustains them over the winter and makes it possible to plant again the next year. To please Arynimen and earn his favor, a great festival is held under the harvest moon where the men of the village display their strengths and skills in Arynimen's honor. The symbol of Arynimen is depicted as a stag with a full moon between its horns.

Telai: Spirit of the hunt, twilight, wisdom and cunning. The last of the heavenly triad of Turich, Talai is the spirit of animals and hunters both. Talai is unique in Turich culture in that the spirit is not specifically defined as male or female. There are many tales and stories of how Talai tricked its prey, mortals, and other gods by assuming the guise of either gender or animals. Earning favor with Talai will grant a hunter with skills and success in their hunt, and earning the spirit's disfavor will leave the hunter hungry. To appease Talai, hunters that are successful thank the spirit for allowing the death of one of its creatures and offer some part of the animal to the forest as a token of replenishment. The symbol of Telai is depicted as a circle with a half moon on one side and the branches of an oak on the other.

Enrin: God of Death, pestilence and misfortune. Where Ariold and the Heavenly Trio do not exist, Enrin fills the void. At constant war with the other four deities, Enrin seeks to undo everything that the other gods stand for. When mortals end their lives, it is he who pulls them into the beyond and does not give them back, for the souls of the dead is the only thing that he has. When someone in Turich dies, they are burned on a pyre and then the ashes are scattered, releasing the soul into Enrin's realm where the soul is allowed to sleep for all eternity in the god's embrace. It is believed that those who lived justly in life are stolen by Telai from Enrin's clutches once they die, and become spirits of the forest. Those who are wicked are left to Enrin's cold embrace. The symbol of Enrin is depicted as an empty circle.

Folklore in Turich
The Pyres of Turich: There are tales of a time when the bodies of the dead were not burned, but buried in the cold arctic ground surrounding Turich in graveyards. The God of Death, Enrin, tried to claim the souls inside the unburned bodies, and so left his mark of pestilence and misfortune on them. However, because the souls were still trapped in their corpses, the dead rose from their icy graves and walked upon the land, searching for the warmth of the living to thaw their frigid bones. These corpse walkers spread diseases like the plague everywhere they went, leaving the mark of Enrin carved into the very ground upon which they stood. The curse of the corpse walkers grew dire, and soon there were only a handful of people were left alive. It seemed that there was no way to stop the corpse walkers until desperation forced one of the survivors to burn one of the corpses. After having been set aflame, the corpse's soul was finally released from the body and fled to Enrin's side gratefully with a whisper of thanks upon the wind. The plague of the corpse walkers was soon put to a rest, and to this day the people of Turich make sure to burn their dead, friend and foe alike to keep Enrin from putting his mark upon the corpses of the dead.
