Basically make it us as we go, this is for practising with those characters that you barely ever use/are new to you. Or of course your personal favourites.
There will be no posting order to keep a fast-ish pace. So 3, 2, 1...GO!

Rose pulled up her hood and walked outside, the day dark and sparsely spotted with sunlight. She trudged down the lane and looked at the local bookstore a small light coming to her golden gaze. "Maybe I should see if I can find that documentary." she mumbled to herself as she walked in. She browsed the new arrivals casually and with a small show of grace as she let her hood fall to her shoulders. She flipped a few pages and scanned the book before putting it back down and searching through another, continuously repeating the process through at least five books before meeting another person. "Hello." she greeted glancing up, albeit distracted.

When the little bell went, Starling stood up sharply. She was so bored working in the little bookshop, but the money was good. She’s be moving cities again soon anyway, so she didn’t have long to put up with. It just seemed a little ironic that she worked in a bookshop, while still being one of the few people around who couldn’t actually read.

She took one customer’s payment for one of the books form the middle shelf, and continued to watch everyone in the shop. She usually worked in taverns or bars when she visited cities, but here there had been a shortage of spaces, so she had resorted to the bookshop. In taverns, there was every sort of person imaginable, but in this store there was only one type: people who read for fun. She almost wanted to ask someone to read the little message on her bracelet for her, but she would feel daft if she had to. No, that was her own problem. She focused on the newcomer, who was flicking through books like a crazy person. Starling sighed. The sooner closing time came, the better.

Rose chose a book and walked over to pay for it. "You look like you'd rather be anywhere but here." she noted quietly getting out her money. "It's a rather dull day don't you think?" she asked, her voice soft and light. "My name is Axel, what's yours?" Her hair sort of hung down over her pointed ears and shielded her oddly colored eyes from most of the light in the room. The passing light from broken cloud cover sneaked a few rays in and made her skin glow its fluorescent sickly white color for a moment before the light would retreat again behind the clouds.

Starling took the money to put in the till, and nodded. As she did, the wings she had kept folded to tidily peeped out from behind her back – just the very tips, but enough to be seen. “Yeah, I must admit this isn’t my favourite line of work. I can’t say I have any interest in books.” She said, not wanting to admit that she couldn’t read. At home it was never a problem (she guessed that was why they never taught her), but out in the rest of the world it was tough. She hadn’t even considered her wings having any effect on the customers of the little store, so she did nothing to prevent the edges of those midnight dark, green-flecked feathers being seen.

Khonsu walks down the street she could feel the eyes of male males looking her over. But the watching did not even phase her as she pauses by a little book store. She looks through the glass at some of the titles that where displayed. Tucking a stray fall of her long hair behind her ear she decides to enter the quaint little shop. She glances at the little bell that rang as she enters, the feel of the room was calm and quiet to her, sometime she could get the feel of a place just by walking in. She looks at the other two within and gives an slight nod in greeting before stepping up the shelves.

Another person had walked in and she gave a nod holding her book before paying the small sum and going back to browsing the shelves. "You have a set of wings yes?" she asked looking back over to the counter. Some of the books were old and dusty, but those were usually the ones she enjoyed the most. She looked over at the new person and blinked. In so much time since she'd started her beloved career she'd never quite seen a woman like her. She was dark, like most elves she knew it seemed, but the tell-tale pointed ears were nowhere to be seen. So what in the name of her forefathers could this newcomer be? "My name is Axel, what's yours?" she asked looking at the new girl. She was hoping to get a name but glanced at the girl behind the counter again with a questioning look. "Who is she?" she mouthed silently.

Khonsu gave an slight bow as she was inquired of her name. "My name is Khonsu Nut Sokar, but most just call me Khonsu. It is a pleasure to make your acquaintance Axel." She looks over the female who introduced herself to her. She looked like a hunter of sorts by the way her cloths would match the woods. She took in the females eyes that almost that of a wolf. She did not know what to think of the pointed ears, for where she had come from there were no elves. Khonsu takes note of Starling's wings peeking from her back and gives a faint smile as the tattoo of wings gives a life like ripple on her back.

Anup tracks Khonsu by her sent trail and stops in front of the shop window and pants on the glass. The thick gold collar flashing in the over cast sun light.

She could tell the woman was confused, if that was the right word. "I. . .I take it you've never seen an elf before." she said quietly. "Are there none of my people where you come from?" she asked. "Certainly you must be from a very secluded country. . .You can find elves in every corner of the globe, or so I thought." Here she smiled and rubbed her neck. "Then again I've never seen anyone quite as unique as you, especially not in a town where you can see someone ten times in the same hour because the routines are always the same."

She shakes her head, "No I have not meet one of your kind before but I have heard stories of those who dwell within the forests." Khonsu tucks a long strand of gun metal hair behind her ear as she thinks back to the stories she heard. "Do you people live or travel into the desert? I would not think of many who would want to travel into the hot sands. Except those who earn their living by leading caravans." Anup gives a little yip of a bark to get Khonsu's attention. With a mile she shake of her head the little black jackal slowly lowers herself down and lays just below the window to wait. Once in a while she would give out an irritated yip for being stuck outside and not with her. Everything about Khonsu seems to speck of someone who came from a high class family and good breeding, just by the way she speaks, her manners, and the way she carries herself.

“I’m Starling, and I’m afraid I haven’t seen her before.” She answered, smiling politely. She nodded to the new customer politely from behind the counter, before staring off into space. After a few moments, that too seemed boring, and she resolved to studying her bracelet. Although she could not read, she could see that there was writing on it. The silver charm was tiny, and the writing even smaller, but it was the one thing that she owned that had some significance. It had been from her mother – that was all she knew – and until she could read what it said, she would never know anything about where she was from.

Khonsu looks down at the bracelet that Starling was looking at. "That is a beautiful bracelet, may I see?" Even from were she was she could see that there was writing on it. Tucking a strand of hair back behind her ear she leans a bit closer trying to decipher what it could be said. "Do you know what it says?" She could almost make out what was said but few words stand out to her. Anup pop her head back up in the window as if seeing if Khonsu was coming out yet. With a huff the jackal lays back down.

“Huh? Sorry there. Thanks.” Starling spluttered as the voice of a customer plucked her out of her daydreaming and –plunged her back into reality. “No, I have no idea, but don’t trouble yourself about it. It won’t be much, I’m sure.” She smiled, re-adjusting the position of her wings as they began to itch in the dusty shop. She was distantly counting the hours before she could close up, but as the sun burned high in the sky still she reckoned that it would be a long afternoon no matter what.

Looking out of the window, Starling decided that she would do a bit of people-watching. She found them fascinating, but in the bookshop there wasn’t much happening. Outside there were just a few people sloping around, but at least it was something. She kept one eye on them, while trying to appear interested in the shop itself. It wasn’t going well.

"Alright, but there was a name on it that I could decipher." Khonsu turns and heads to the door. She could not make people listen, she knew they will in their own time and way. Anup bounces up and down outside the window as he hears her come. His tongue sticking out as be bounces it was a surprise he hadn't bitten it yet. Opening the door the jackal greets her with barks and whines. "Alright, alright we are going." She looks over her shoulder at the girl one more time before closing the door behind her.

Turning left down the street she head toward the butchers to get the jackal something to eat.

Starling thought about just nodding to the comment, and letting Khonsu pass, but as her mind registered what she had said, she found herself in a bit of a panic. “Wait, miss!” she called, before vaulting over the wooden counter of the shop. She dashed outside, following the woman, and utterly disregarding the shop. She arrived nearby in a few minutes, panting desperately. “You said … that you … could see a name. What was it?” she asked, gasping for air and allowing her wings to blow in the wind. She had never really cared about the bracelet, but somehow the mention of it had unearthed some concern within her. And, in the midst of such a boring day, she wouldn’t have passed up the chance of something at least mildly interesting.

Khonsu glances over her shoulder and pretends not to hear her at first. When the other female catches up to her, she smiles. She had a feeling the bracelet was important. She pats Anups silky head as she turns. "I thought you didn't care what it said?" Maybe she would play a little bit with the other female but then looking on how concerned she way she decided not to. She opens her hand so she could look at the bracelet better. "I was just learning other languages when I was younger, though I know many. There are some that I haven't learned yet." Leaning closer to the bracelet she can make out other things. She reads, "...sorry...Jackdaww...find...other half." She looks up at Starling. "That is all I am able to make out. She could have guessed at some of them but she didn't want to chance saying the wrong thing. "I hope it helps you."

“O.K, maybe I do care a little.” She said softly. However, when Khonsu read the little line of text, she felt her heart flutter. Jackdaw – like the bird? Well, it was a start. “Thank you, miss. It’s a big help.” She smiled, nodding in a half-bow of politeness. Then, she remembered how she had left the shop. Damn, her boss was going to kill her. Leaping upright again, she smiled, thanking Khonsu again, before half running, half flying back to the bookshop, hoping that no one had stolen anything. She didn’t think they would have, but it was always a possibility, and if anything was missing she would be in deep trouble.

The bell on the door rang loudly as Starling exploded through the door and leapt over the counter again, causing an impossibly loud noise in the silent store. It seemed incredibly awkward, and she could only pray that the manager hadn’t heard. She went back to quietly watching the customers, but her heart and mind were racing, trying to piece together the tiny few words that she now knew were hidden on her bracelet.

Khonsu was glad to help the girl out, even Anup seemed to be happy. The black jackal was bouncing around. Then she realized it was miss placed joy the pup just wanted the large bone with bits of meat still on it. Sighing she pays for the bone and gives it to the jackal. Heading down the road with women s glares and men ogling her because of how she dressed Khonsu payed them no mind. She was very used to it, but it was how her people had dressed.

There certainly were some strange characters in this town, that was for sure. Zhenya stared with undisguised curiosity at a scantily clad woman walking down the street with some sort of doggy thing bouncing around her feet. Was there a brothel nearby or something? She couldn't think why the woman would want to advertise her body so if there weren't.
Come on, hurry up, a voice from afar told her.
Sorry, just enjoying the local sights, she replied teasingly to her best friend and the dragon she rode, Rhynna.
I'd hope that if you were male, you'd have told me by now. Zhenya laughed lightly, happy in the lone company of the antler dragon as she always was, and attracted some odd looks. Reacting to conversations no one else could hear with people that no one else could did tend to make her look a little odd- but no matter. She wouldn't be staying in town for long, anyway.

Reaching the bookshop, she pulled the door opened and stepped inside to an accompaniment of bells. She paid the girl behind the desk no attention, moving over to the shelves and beginning to search for the book she needed. After a few minutes of searching, however, she still hadn't located it. With a noise of irritation which was mirrored by Rhynna's thoughts, the girl strode over to the desk.
'Excuse me,' she said to the girl there. 'Do you have any books on-' Something caught her eyes, peeping out from behind the shopgirl's back. She instantly stepped backwards, a wave of emotions hitting her abruptly. They comprised largely of jealously and bitterness. The glossy feathers which he could see behind the girl- the other avian- reminded her of the thing she wanted to be reminded of least on a day which she had been enjoying like this one.

Ooc: I hope you don't mind me randomly joining, but character practice is something I definitely need with Rhynna and Zhenya.

“Excuse me?” Starling asked, “Books on what?” She had expected odd looks about her wings, but decided to just get on with it. It was only a temporary job, after all, so she could just about ignore all of the customers.

However, as she looked up from her bored place behind the counter, and was surprised to find an unusual look on the customer’s face. She didn’t look shocked but her wings, but rather… Starling wasn’t sure. The look on the girl’s face was like a cross between sorrow and contempt, and Starling wasn’t sure what to make of it. Instead, she looked downwards, and decided to ignore it. When it doubt, pretend nothing ever happened.

--

A bookshop. Great. Rhys had been meaning to look for a new book of magic tricks – his old ones were getting boring. He stopped just outside the little building and re-adjusted his eye patch. That day it was an emerald-green star, with short, stubby arms. Then, once he was satisfied, he walked inside, smiling as the little bell above the door jingled.

He made his way towards the back of the shop, looking for a book. However, he did nod and mumble to every other customer he passed – he was so trusting of people, and would instantly try to greet them, rather than take the lonelier route of only speaking to a select few. He found the shelf he was looking for, and crouched down, studying the low shelf for anything of interest.
(bringing Rhys in too, as I need to work with him a bit more)

After staring at the avian's folded wings for several more moments, a strange flicker crossed Zhenya's face and she drew in a long breath before letting it out again in a sigh.
You okay, Zhen? Rhynna asked anxiously. She ignored the dragon for a moment.
'Yeah, I need some books on acrobats, if you have any?' she said. She and the antler had decided to try and get some work as acrobats- their long experience with flying, both individually and together, and the girl's strong and flexible body made them ideal- but she didn't really know what they could do when demonstrating their talents. Hopefully if she could pick up some books on the subject then she'd be able to get a better idea. As she spoke, she couldn't help her eyes from drifting back to the feathers with sour jealousy. Did this avian appreciate her wings? Did she realise how lucky she was to have the capability to fly? And that human skulking in the back of the shop... He was lucky too. Lucky to not have once had that capability, and then have it ripped away from him, quite literally.
Not that you're bitter or anything, Rhynna couldn't help uncharacteristically saying. While the antler was generally boringly nice and inoffensive, they'd had this conversation before. Be grateful that you had the chance to fly at all- and that you still can, even if not with quite as much freedom. Zhenya made a face, momentarily forgetting the girl standing opposite her.
Not helping.

“Erm, acrobats? They’ll be over in that corner if they’re anywhere – we keep books on any sort of performance over there.” Starling replied, pointing to a shelf of books. She wasn’t exactly sure where they’d be, but it seemed like a good guess, and she was sure she remembered someone telling her that was where to point people.

She dimly registered the new customer, who seemed to be looking at a shelf near the one on performance, but her attention was still on the girl in front of her. She couldn’t understand what the looks she was giving her meant, and was desperately trying to figure it out. Any other day she would have asked upfront, but her mind was still ticking over the snippet of writing on her bracelet, and she didn’t want to risk upsetting the delicate hope inside her.

It was only then that she even noticed the dragon oputside. It shocked her that she hadn’t seen them, but she hadn’t been paying much attention after all. She was going to have to learn to be more attentive, or find herself a new job. This one really didn’t seem to be working. Just a couple of hours longer, she thought, until I can close up. Just a couple more hours.

'Thank you,' Zhenya nodded, giving the girl's wings one last bitter look before she moved away to the correct shelf. She flicked through the books available, glancing over at another customer next to her. In the end selected a volume which listed warm-ups and a few basic moves, as well as some famous acrobats and their signature moves. Most of the basic tricks she could already do, and the more advanced ones were nearly all beyond her, but it was the best the shop had and it might be useful. The warm-ups would be good, at least- they apparently improved flexibility and strength when performed regularly. As she moved back over to the avian to pay, she heard a few startled shouts out in the street and then a loud noise as something landed on the rooftops.
Zhen. Rhynna sounded insistent, entirely unwilling to let her rider skate over the issue of her wings.
What are you doing? The roof will cave in!
It's fine, I'm spread across several shops. Zhenya didn't entirely agree that it was fine, but she gave up on arguing for a moment and let the dragon talk at her, placing the book on the counter for the shopgirl.

... it's not going to do you any good, blocking it out. You have to talk about it, or something! The antler dragon was obviously concerned, but the avian had heard it all before and had no desire to again.
I'm fine, Rhynna. I can deal with it.
But... A scrabbling sound followed as her mental words trailed off, before a white and green striped head appeared in the shop's window, hanging upside down from the roof. I'm worried about you, she said, almost pleadingly. Zhenya shook her head with a small smile before delving into her pack for some money. They had a worryingly small amount left... She just hoped that they could find some work with the travelling circus which was due in town soon.

As the woman who had stopped nearby moved away, Rhys finally selected a book. It was about complex slight-of-hand tricks, and a little bit about showmanship, which would be helpful. He grabbed the book and headed to the till.

Placing it down silently on the counter, he waited for his turn, shifting his eye patch cautiously. He was still uncomfortable with it, and couldn’t get used to the feel of it against his skin. Maybe that would just come with time.

As he waited, he tried to think of where he would go from there. He had no real job (since performing on street corners and in bars didn’t really count), and was yet to find a place to stay, so he could only hope this little town would pose some sort of opportunity.

“Thank you for your custom. Feel free to drop in with any comments.” Starling said to the girl, feeling like that was all she ever said, working here. However, she was starting to get really uncomfortable about the looks this customer was giving her wings. She made an effort to hide them a little better, but that wasn’t going to do much good – they could only fold so far, really.

As the dragon’s face appeared in front of the window, however, Starling jumped in shock. She wasn’t sure how old the building was, and had no idea if it was strong enough to support a fully grown dragon. However, she didn’t protest – what was she going to do, throw books at them?

Turning her attention to the man, she put on her best smile and asked fro the money, checking the back of the book. Normally she would have asked how he was doing, or if he needed any help, but she was far to sick of customers to care any more.

'Thanks,' Zhenya sighed, casting one last look to the girl's wings before going out. She saw the avian tuck the feathers further behind her back, looking uncomfortable, which caused her to stop with a slight frown. Why was she hiding her wings? She certainly shouldn't be ashamed of them.
Maybe it's something to do with the looks you've been giving her, Rhynna suggested dryly. The girl gave a small hrumph, but turned hesitantly back all the same, experiencing a rare feeling of guilt. She felt that she should say something, but she wasn't sure what.
'Um... You're lucky,' she offered. 'To, uh, to have wings.' She could practically feel her antler dragon headwindowing behind her, but she didn't turn to see Rhynna's expression as she hovered awkwardly in the shop.
