It's a rainy day outside and it's cold and muddy to boot! The circus is no exception and it isn't exactly helping morale. Some members have even gotten moody over it. What could possibly go wrong?

Order:
Fredrick-Peer
Rhys-Kat
Silence-Liza
Zhenya & Rhynna-Artemis

Rain was never good for anybody's morale. It wasn't just the circus that was affected, but those usual forest-dwellers as well.

Not only was the forest wet, rainy, muddy, and overcast, but it was also a lot more dangerous in this neck of the woods. One specific creature had made its home here and as a result, there were sticky, invisible traps strewn between the trees.

Indeed, the woods were thick with spider-webs. Not just regular ol' Spider-webs, either, but webs strong enough to stop a fawn in its tracks. Even a bear-cub would have some difficulties getting out of these webs. Humans barely stood a chance against these strong, super-adhesive binds. On top of that, they were NOT very easily cut by swords. If the strike wasn't true and swift, and with a razor-sharp edge, the sword risked being caught in these webs as well.

And who owned these webs? Definitely not your average spider.

Fredrick wasn't in the rain anymore, but his webs still were. The beast was cowering in a cave, for the time being, very upset that he had to leave so many webs untended. Of course, he had light strands of each web leading back to the cave he was in, so that they would signal to him if they had prey caught in them, and he cast one additional web in front of the cave in case any cold creature decided to seek shelter here. Unfortunately, most of the creatures had already found a comfortable place and weren't risking getting caught in his traps. In addition to being super cold, he was faced with the prospect of not eating AGAIN today. Since it had been about a week since he had a decent meal, and it was cold out, the creature was dwelling on some very negative feelings.

The woods seemed to creak around Rhys as he walked, his steps tiny and uncertain. A huge, angry red line split his face, stretching from his temple down past the collar of his shirt, and he had a simple black eye patch tied over the eye the livid scar crossed. He had promised himself that he would get out of the city again – he wouldn’t hide from the outside world forever – but it was scarier than he remembered it out there.

He flinched at every noise he heard – from the crackle of twigs underfoot to the low calls of birds hiding high up in the trees, but he forced himself to keep walking. /There’s no one else here/ he told himself, /you’re safe/. He didn’t believe it.

Something brushed his sleeve, and he flinched away from it. It looked like a cobweb, but he couldn’t quite shake it off his sleeve. His eyes scanned up the length of the raindrop-coated fibre, before widening in horror. The web was huge – it stretched as far into the woods as he could see through the trees, and every strand had enough stickiness to catch a million flies. It looked almost industrial, by cobweb standards, and that coupled with his paranoia was enough to make him physically tremble. He hadn’t been ready to face the woods again, it had been a bad idea – maybe he should just start to turn around and go home…

Except he couldn’t – his sleeve was stuck fast, and there was no way he was leaving his coat behind. He struggled a bit, pulling at the threads, but only succeeded in getting them tangled a little more tightly over his forearm. “Dammit.” He cursed under his breath, before using his free hand to fish in his pockets, searching for a knife to cut at the threads, still trembling where he stood.

"Where are you, ya human magpie?!" Silence shouted in a rather ornery tone. She hated the rain with a burning hellish passion, and it showed quite easily as the rain that landed on her or somewhere near her turned to steam and thus made the area very foggy very quickly. "Rhys where are you?!" she yelled again. This was definitely not her day. First it started raining then her boss sent her to look for this recluse who recently joined their dysfunctional family, now she was out in the woods in the rain and it was freezing cold! What could possibly happen next?!

Light showers were a brilliant thing, in Zhenya's opinion. Especially when the circus was in the hotter parts of the country; the mist of cool rain moistening the air was refreshing and gave everything in the sky a shimmer like morning dew. Flying through a cloud could be fun as well; they came out wet and cold and stayed that way for a good while, but all the same it was an interesting experience.

This torrential flood of water, however, was not so enjoyable.

Shivering, Zhenya bent low over Rhynna's neck and buried her hands deep into the thick green mane which grew along her spine, trying to get past the wet fur and reach the warm, dry hair.
Can we land? she asked, burying her face in the mane too.
I think so... It looks like there's a clearing down there. Flaring her wings, Rhynna glid slowly groundwards, spiralling into the clearing and thumping down amongst the trees. She immediately headed for their cover, crouching low to fit under the canopy. Once they were safely under the leaves and there was slightly less water dripping on them, Zhenya slid from her saddle and walked through the woods ahead of her dragon. It was strangely quiet under the trees, all the animals which normally inhabited the forest taking refuge from the weather. So when a voice came from their left, the pair's attention was immediately grabbed.
Rhys? Rhynna suggested cautiously.
Sounds like it. By unspoken consent, the two set off through the trees towards the voice.

What was this?! Fredrick was immediately alerted to this new presence as one of his webs tugged away in alarm. Yesss... something had caught in his web! Since it was just the fellow's sleeve, he figured it might be small; something like a rabbit. He wasn't going to let that go to waste though. Food was food. And Rabbits were tasty. without a moment to loose, Fredrick skittered out of his cave and followed the strands to the web that had caught something for him.

As he got nearer, he spotted his prey between the trees. A humanoid! He grumbled a bit. Humans were a pain, and ... he sort of felt slightly... well, he didn't know, but he didn't like eating their meat. But when he was hungry enough (which he was), he wasn't going to argue. But to make it maybe ... less confrontational, he slipped into the trees above them and began to creep over, hoping to hide a little better to prevent his prey from starting to shout and scream and thrash and scare away all other potential prey.

So Fredrick slipped quietly above the captured human, and licked the rain off his lips and assessed his prey. It looked like he was only caught by his arm, which was a weak hold. Enough strength MIGHT be able to rip him away. Additionally, his prey was able to look all around himself, so there was no angle he could sneak up behind him from.

That was a pain.

Well, all right. Better to just get this over with them. Fredrick barked down a greeting to his captured victim, smiled, and waved at him. And now that he had introduced himself, he began to crawl down for him. :3

Rhys tugged at his arm a little harder, before the voice of one of the other circus members reached him. Human magpie? Only one person called him that. “Silence? I’m over here!” he said, trying to shout, but his terrified voice came out as a weak, whispery sound that even he had trouble hearing over the sound of the persistent rain. He was just about to try calling out again when a voice behind him grabbed his attention. He turned around sharply, another thread sticking to the back of his jacket loosely as he did so, to see who had spoken. The creature he saw startled him, to say the least.

His human upper-half seemed to melt into a harsh black exoskeleton, and Rhys had to admit he was a little worried by him, but there was only so much /more/ scared he could have been. And that explained the mass of huge webs. He swallowed hard, straightening himself up as much as possible, and addressed the creature before him.

“Erm, hello there. I’m a little, er, stuck – could you help?” he asked nervously, hoping that the man (for man sounded more polite than ‘thing’) was feeling helpful. He was also praying that Silence would get to him soon – he needed to get back to the city, and although he was never sure how to react to the fire-breather, he knew she would at least deposit him somewhere less dangerous until his legs had stopped shaking.

When she came up to him she didn't notice Fredrick at first. "Oh Hell's bells and pulpit upstarts you just can't stay out of trouble can you? Nevertheless, I'm glad you're at least in one piece." Upon seeing how terrified he was, she paused in her attempts to disentangle him and set her hands on her hips. "Are you utterly daft for blundering about out here in the rain? I'm not the only one the boss sent out here y'know! If I catch pneumonia because of this I'll be sure to spread it to you before I pass on." Upon further inspection of the mess Rhys had gotten into she gulped. After taking a cautious look upward she screamed, she'd never seen anything quite so scary in her life as spiders go!

They were both somewhat surprised to hear Silence's voice coming through the trees after Rhys', but they weren't worried until she screamed. Casting alarmed looks at each other, the pair broke into a run and skidded to a halt when they saw the two with their necks craned upwards to look at something in the trees. Naturally, both of their own gazes followed. Rhynna flinched back when she saw the creature, cowering.
It's... it's... what is it? she asked, staring at the strange crossbreed with terror.
It's pretty damn creepy. Zhenya's eyes travelled swiftly over the area, taking in the huge webs which were draped across the trees- and Rhys' arm, stuck in one. And I think it's about to eat Rhys, if we don't do something about it. She strode towards the other two performers.
'What happened?' she hissed to them, peering down at the magician's arm entangled in the web before glancing up to check on the spider-thing's position.
You don't know what he wants, Rhynna said anxiously. Maybe he's friendly...
He caught Rhys in his web, she pointed out bluntly, proceeding to ignore the dragon's weak protests of how it was hardly the spider's fault what walked into the web.
'We need to get that web off you before the spider attacks,' she told him in a low tone, shoulder muscles tense and ready to make a getaway with the wings which weren't there.

Oh no. No no no, none of this nonsense. It had FRIENDS. He knew what was going to come next. They were going to try to get him free, and destroy his web in the process. Neither of these things were good for him. Before they could deliberate any longer, Fredrick darted in front of Rhys possessively and HISSED at the trespassers. With a swift kick of one of his back legs, he heartily shoved Rhys from just having his arm and Back kind of caught in the web to having ALL of one side of him pushed against his sticky trap.

He didn't like being outnumbered, but this would make it harder for them to get their friend out if Fredrick had to retreat. Meanwhile, he raised his front legs threatening and showed his tiny little human fangs, which probably weren't that intimidating to people who didn't know how toxic his bite was. He balled his hands into fists, too, indicating he was definitely ready to fight these folk.

This was HIS food.

(Permission for hitting granted. Assume that he WAS struck.)

“I was trying to get used to the woods. I, er, got a bit stuck.” He explained quietly, physically trembling. However, as the spider-thing forced him back, further into the web, the shaking stopped, and he found himself unable to move. Snap out of it, you idiot, he thought to himself, forcing his mind clear. He was in serious trouble now, and standing there quivering was not going to help. Now, where had that knife gotten to anyway? He reached his free hand into his pocket, and brought out a table dagger, sharpened to a fine point. It was pretty much the only weapon he carried, and without any depth perception it was generally quite useless, but it looked sharp enough to cut through the web he was stuck in. He pulled it out, and with a vague sweep managed to cut one of the threads, loosening up one shoulder a little. From that position he could reach more of his surroundings, which he hoped would be of some use.

A few feet in front of him was a large, dead stick. It had a few stripes of sticky web draped over it, but looked free from the main trap. Rhys strained to reach it, his weight stretching the web a little, before his hand finally closed over the heavy branch. Then, the web sprang back, and his back contacted it, leaving only one arm free, and his feet a few inches above the ground.

The spider-man-thing was doing some sort of aggressive display, which at least bought Rhys some time. He lifted the stick as high as he could from his rather vulnerable position, and aimed for the back of his captor’s head. Then, he brought the stick down hard, hoping to at least distract the creature so someone could cut him free.

"Don't pull that crap with me!" She was about to reach out and knock his block off when Rhys hit the thing over the head. "Nice swing, but it needs work." She backed away from the creature and tried, half-successfully, to burn the web. "This is some strong web isn't it?" Finally she stopped and gave up on it for fear of getting stuck herself. "That's it, it's gotta be cut if you're gonna get free." That spider creature was creepy! "What to do about that thing though? Do we catch it and put it in the sideshow or do we just run for our lives?"

The spider thing seemed to be running circles around them. Zhenya watched with horror as the spider shoved Rhys back, rendering his attempts to cut himself free practically useless.
'Rhynna,' she yowled to the dragon as she twisted herself around the webs to reach in to Rhys and pluck the knife from his hand. Who would've known her flexibility from the circus would come in so useful? Sticking the knife in her mouth and freeing her hands to steady herself, the girl inched her way back out of the tangle of web before starting to slash it apart with great energy. She knew that there was only so long before the spiderboy did something, and the knife wouldn't stay sharp forever against this stuff. It was taking both her arms to cut it apart- and she was making slow progress.
'Rhyn, do something!'

The dragon flinched as Zhenya shouted at her again, whisking her tail away from the webs and wrapping it around herself. What should she do? Fighting was hardly her forte- well, neither of them were cut out for it, but at least the girl wasn't a complete wuss like Rhynna. Throwing a desperate glance to Rose for help- and trying to ignore how that ungodly thing was hissing at them- she did the only thing she could think of and urged the vines which grew up the sides of some of the trees to grow out towards the monster. Unfortunately, she couldn't bring herself to look at the horrific thing, and so the wavering attempts which the vines made to reach out and ensnare it were less than effective.

The Circus is a Family Empty
PostSubject: Re: The Circus is a Family   The Circus is a Family Icon_minitimeTue Mar 06, 2012 10:18 pm

At this point, it became strikingly obvious that being outnumbered sucked.

Having been struck in the head by a sizable bough, Fredrick reeled for a moment, and was forced to put his two front legs down (the ones that he had been threatening with) for additional balance. At that SAME time, they were now ALL trying to destroy his web. It was a godsend it was raining, or else the flammable adhesive webs WOULD have gone up faster than paper from the fire. Fortunately for him (and unfortunately for everybody else) water was a great flame retardant. If he had the capacity to thank a deity that it was raining, he would have at that point. But then he quickly went back to loathing the rain. To make matters worse, All of the sudden, the forest started HATING him! It expressed this by suddenly sprouting vines that wrapped around two of his legs.

This was quickly becoming overwhelming. He was already in a bad mood because of the rain, and just as he had thought he'd be able to eat, stupid human things all wanted to destroy his webs. They MIGHT not realize how much energy it took to create them. One of the reasons WHY he had to eat was so that he could keep producing the webbing. Destroying it was going to make him need to make another web even sooner. For him, this was a battle not between him vs. them in this exact moment, but a battle between him and the possibility of surviving at all this season. Just as Rhys was fighting for his life, Fredrick was fighting for his own.

He wasn't going to give up as easily as all that. He shook his head to try to clear the stars from it, and focused back on Rhys. Although his legs WERE kind of weapon-y, in truth, he was a lot more capable with his human appendages. So he reached out and grabbed at the branch and tried to rip it away from Rhys. As his feet were tangled, though, he couldn't fully turn and this was already starting to look like this was a losing battle. All the human-things had pointy things that they were destroying his web with, and that he knew could pierce his soft human-y flesh if they turned the pointy things against him. He had to start crowd-controlling or get their focus away from Rhys.

So he turned his attention to someone in front of him - Silence - and reached out to grab her, with the intention of biting her.

When the spider-thing turned around to grab at the branch, Rhys flinched back in fear, his grip on the thing loosening. As the creature can closer, he let go completely, letting the branch decide if it went to the ground or into the hands of Fredrick. He squeezed his good eye shut, whimpering a little. This could /not/ be happening – there was nothing at all right with this picture. His greatest fears had all come to life simultaneously, and they were now trying to kill him. This was why he didn’t leave the city.

“Thisisnothappeningthisisnothappeningthisisnothappening…” he started to mutter to himself, his fist clenched by his sides. He couldn’t imagine how that day could get nay worse, so just stood still, waiting either to be cut free or for the spider-thing to finish with him. He was hoping it would be the first option, but right then his thoughts weren’t coherent enough to form any true wishes.

As he trembled to himself, however, his terrified, scrambled mind began flicking through magic tricks. He knew they were all fake, and the other performers must do too, but what about the spider-creature? Maybe he could distract it for a moment? It was worth a try.

He forced himself to open his eye, not looking at the creature’s legs to avoid freaking out, and carefully worked a hard-boiled egg out of his sleeve using his wrist, to hide with one hand. He had just about enough mobility left to juggle messily, and the conjuring trick would hopefully buy him some time. The thing had hold of Silence, and he had to at least get it away from her.

“Hey, spidey, look at this.” He said uncertainly, trying to keep his voice level. He showed his ‘empty’ hands, remembering how the trick went flawlessly. Then, with a flick of his wrist, he plucked the egg seemingly out of a knot of web near his hand. There, attention-grabbing phase completed – time to see if it had worked.

Had she been able to speak she'd have shouted for someone to help her, but at that moment she wasn't able to get the words out. This thing was fairly strong and it was hard enough just to breath, much less do anything else. Rhys was going to get it handed to him if she survived the rest of the day. "L-Let. . .Go. . ." she wheezed trying to look mad. By now though, the only thing she looked to be was helpless.

She struggled to do much of anything but eventually coughed out a puff of black smoke. Finally she just gave up struggling and glared her best at Rhys. "Grow. . .A spine. . .Stupid magpie. . ." With that being said, or rather choked, she shut her eyes and just tried to get air into her lungs. She thought for a moment on the wingless avian and decided that with a large dragon for a companion she was safe enough.

[OOC: Silence is KO'd for now.]

The only thing Zhenya could find to be thankful for was that the spider thing didn’t seem too concerned about her in particular. Everything else was looking pretty dire; Rhys was more ensnared than ever, Silence’s attempts to burn the web down were fruitless, and apparently the two vines which Rhynna had managed to get the thing with weren’t a real issue, as it lunged out at Rhys and tried to snatch the branch away from him. Making a futile attempt to ignore it, the avian paused and studied the web. Instead of slashing blindly, maybe she could get through it quicker by being logical? After a second or two, she hacked at one of the threads which the whole structure was hanging off; sure enough, a section of it sagged, and she continued this new style of attack with renewed vigour.

But this small victory was shortlived. Silence’s spluttered words caught Zhenya’s attention and she spun to see the woman practically being strangled by the spider boy, which seemed about to bite her. For the first time, she wondered if its bite was poisonous… She hadn’t come across them too much, always travelling by air, but there were plenty of nasty spiders out there, weren’t there? And why else would it bite? To eat Silence?

Maybe! Interjected Rhynna on a wave of excited thought. Maybe it’s just hungry!
It could be, replied Zhenya thoughtfully. Go and find something to offer it instead.
The dragon didn’t need telling twice; she spun on her haunches and sped off through the trees, crouching slow with her wings pressed to her body to fit amongst their trunks. She was a decent hunter, but nothing remarkable. Even if the spider did just want food, there was no guarantee that she’d get back with something in time.
"Hang in there, everyone," said the girl through gritted teeth as she advanced on their attacker with her knife at the ready. The last thing she wanted to do was get closer to it, but she could hardly abandon Silence.

The Circus is a Family Empty
PostSubject: Re: The Circus is a Family   The Circus is a Family Icon_minitimeMon Mar 12, 2012 5:27 pm

Silence wasn't going anywhere, now. In one swift motion, Fredrick had sunk his fangs into her shoulder, pumped an unhealthy dose of venom into her, and had INTENDED to kill her right there. After all, they wouldn't need a dead comrade. If he couldn't eat the guy caught in his web, maybe he could eat somebody else, instead.

However, his attention was diverted. Thankfully for Silence, Rhys HAD actually manages to surprise Fredrick. Fredrick let go of Silence before the venom entering her system could raise to a lethal amount. For now, though, he abandoned his secondary prey. He was glad, too, that one of the other humanies decided to run off and save themselves.

But what caught his attention, really, was the fact that Rhys seemed to have pulled an egg from his web. Fredrick KNEW that there hadn't been anything there before. He knew his web front and back. Each strand was like a part of his nervous system, really. Well, he couldn't feel pain, but he could feel the pressure, the pulls, the weight, the tugs of each wisp. There had NOT been a small white stone-like sphere there before. THIS WAS CRAZY.

Fredrick was still very much on edge but his aggression seemed to deter a bit and was replaced by confusion and wonder. He half-stumbled back over to Rhys (still a bit restrained by the vines), and seized Rhys' hand. He took the egg from him, and then looked in front of his hand, behind his hand, peered up his sleeve... He smelled the egg and tipped his head.

With a swift motion, Fredrick popped the entire egg in his mouth and swallowed it whole. Then, he started trying to flick Rhys' hand back and forth, trying to make another one appear.

Rhys flinched back as the spider-thing took the egg from his hand, and swallowed hard. However he had managed to get it away from Silence, which had to be a good thing. He just hoped that the creature hadn’t hurt her before letting go.

His right hand was now trapped by the creature, who seemed to be trying to get another egg out of him, so he discretely shuffled a second egg into the crook in his hand that he usually hid them in, before plucking it out of a different piece of web and waving it at the spider-thing as vigorously as he could, shaking the web a little in the process. At least the mind-numbing act of performing the trick (or parts of it) was enough to stop him worrying – his knees had stopped shaking for the time being, which was definitely an improvement.

When he noticed Rhynna leaving, however, his confidence crumbled a little. “Where are you going?” he called pathetically, but the girl was already too far away to hear. He was certain that the spider thing was going to eat him – he couldn’t see the whole thing ending any other way, but that didn’t worry him too much. He wasn’t actually afraid of dying – thoughts far darker had crossed his mind before, and he was generally quite at home with the whole situation. It was just he had hoped for it /not/ to be caused by a giant spider, deep in the woods.

“Silence, ‘you OK over there?” he called, not sure how badly she had been bitten. He managed a proper shout that time, his hands still motioning through the trick. The brilliant yellow silk handkerchief was ready and waiting to fly over the heads of his ‘audience’, which made him a little more confident.

The plan to attack the spider with a knife was quickly diverted, Zhenya dropping the knife and instead springing to catch Silence as she toppled to the ground. After dragging the woman a little distance away and arranging her on the ground, the acrobat snatched her knife back up and warily skirted around the monster, which Rhys seemed to be distracting for the moment. All she could do was hope that that venom wasn’t lethal- but she wouldn’t be doing any of them any favours if she herself got bitten. Instead, she took a last uneasy glance at the thing’s back before crouching right to the ground and then springing upwards, stretching her arms right up to snare a low-hanging branch of one of the trees above. Gaining momentum, she swung her legs backwards and forwards a few times before flinging herself upwards and spinning up to hook her feet around a higher branch, from which she stood up and then carefully positioned herself above their attacker.
“Come on, Rhys, just a little longer,” she muttered, peering down through the branches to make sure that her target was still distracted.

Padding through the forest with as much stealth as she could muster- which was admittedly not a lot- Rhynna scanned between the trees for signs of movement. There were none. As she emerged into the clearing which she had landed in earlier, she gave a sigh of frustration and leapt into the air, ignoring the beads of rain which collected on the oily surface of her feathers. Once she was no longer shaking all the trees and scaring prey away, she soon spotted a flicker of brown fur underneath the canopy and tipped down into a steep dive, landing on top of the animal and breaking more than a few branches on her way down. A sharp, twisting bite to the neck killed the doe and the antler dragon promptly returned to the air through the hole she had created in the trees, landed again in the clearing, and hurried back to the others.

Gripping the knife so tightly that the pattern on its handle was stamped into her palm when she moved it to her other hand, Zhenya was bracing herself to jump from the trees when she heard a loud crashing from nearby. A quick search mentally confirmed that it was Rhynna on her way back- with food for the animal, if that was what it was after. It didn’t seem like it was entirely safe for them to wait until the dragon returned, though- that thing was more than a little aggressive. Holding her breath, Zhenya hopped off her branch and plummeted through the air, arms spread wide to catch herself on their attacker and get him with the knife, somehow.

He heard a crash off to the side - Rhynna, returning, and even smelled dead meat. It piqued his interest.

Fortunately for Zhenya, Fredrick had destractions a-plenty so she was not one of his biggest concerns. Okay, so ONE of the humans wanted to get away, and the dragon had taken flight, and that was just fine. He didn't think that Zhenya was going to come back, LEAST of all not ontop of him.

So Fredrick was a clear, stationary target. And she managed to land squarely on his back.

He let out a yelp in surprise before the knife cut into him, and his surprised yelp turned into a shriek of pain as he was cut. Not lethal, fortunately, just a shallow cut across his flesh, but jeez! It hurt! He jerked with an attempt to buck Zhenya off of him, but with two of his legs rooted to the ground, he couldn't get any momentum to do ... really, just about anything. So the only other option was to try to reach behind... but honestly, his torso had surprisingly limited mobility on its own. For a few seconds he spasmed like a dog who was glued to the floor who was trying to chase its tail... Basically, it accomplished nothing and looked funny.

That only lasted for a few seconds though before he got very still. He really had no means of reaching the person behind him. If he could move a little more, he'd have a lot more options, but since he was stuck in one spot because of the vines, he was a lot more helpless than he would have liked to admit to. The person on his back had a shiney pointy thing that hurt, and he had no way of shaking her. His back was bare. If it so pleased her, she could stick that knife straight into him, and right now, he really couldn't do jack squat about it.

But he only had one option now.

Slowly, not to startle anybody, he shuffled his legs and lowered his spider-body onto the ground. He leaned his human torso forward as much as he could, and covering his bowed head with his arms protectively. All aggression stopped now. He was surrenduring.

Rhys watched the events before him, his eyes oddly glassy. He felt like he was a million miles away from the scene, but knew with a sickening dread that he was in fact right at the heart of it. The egg rolled out of his hand and onto the floor, where is smashed seemingly in slow motion. His fear had crept back, and was gnawing at his innards every second, slowing time almost to a standstill. The breaking egg spat yellow yolk upwards, and he felt it splatter his ankles slightly, but paid in no heed. He was in the middle of a dark forest, and the spider thing in front of him still looked horrifying. He couldn’t bring himself to look.

He heard a soft sound as one of the others dropped onto the spider-creature’s back, and managed to haul his mind back into the present, and looked up. Immediately he wished he hadn’t. The creature seemed to be kneeling, and although somewhere deep down he knew that it was a gesture of surrender, the sight of those arachnid legs bending sent shivers down his spine. He shuddered, his blood running cold, and tore his gaze away. His thoughts were refusing to cohere, and all he was left with was a selection of words. ‘Spider! Forest! Danger! Web! Spider!’ his mind screamed to him, repeating it in a never-ending loop. His muscles froze solid, and even as he tried to fight off the fear, his vision clouded, and his knees gave way, removing the scene before him from his awareness.

The web kept him partially suspended, but Rhys didn’t notice or care – he was already out cold. He had never /fainted/ before, on his defence (only been knocked out, or drunk himself unconscious), but he was too far gone to care about that either.

(full PP granted until he comes round, which shouldn’t be until they reach the circus itself again, just to save you all the boredom of reading about him trembling in fear all the way back)

The Circus is a Family Empty
PostSubject: Re: The Circus is a Family   The Circus is a Family Icon_minitimeThu Mar 29, 2012 6:43 pm

It wasn't until shortly after Rhys passed out that Silence began to wake up. She was by no means feeling her best, in fact she couldn't feel her left arm at /all/ and her senses were dulled beyond the point of her knowing where she was. She couldn't feel the cold muddy ground or the rain still hitting her face, and she couldn't see much other than the blur of the trees above her, anything she heard was jumbled up and misplaced. All she felt was the poison coursing through her veins and the pain emanating from her shoulder in pulsing waves.

Her pain only worsened with each passing second as both blood and sickeningly purple venom from the open bite wound in her shoulder mingled with the falling rain. Agony had by far overtaken her ability to speak, and even to cry. Aside from her dead-numb arm, the rest of her body felt nothing but cold, like something had sucked the fire from her very soul. At her first attempt to speak she could hardly make her mouth move, and her voice ultimately failed her for no sound came with the minute movement. Breathing came as a shaky thing to do, like her body thought she was sleeping and had slowed its processes as such. Oh how she wanted to say "help", but the word just wouldn't come out.

Even as Zhenya landed on the creature’s back, she let out a small squeal of her own. Its exoskeleton was smooth and unyielding, but as it thrashed she could feel the muscles underneath moving and making the hard plates of armour twitch about in a way which made her feel somewhat ill. She wasn’t usually squeamish, but it would take her a while to get used to something like this. The first strike with the knife left only a scratch, and she was sure that it would be all too easy for the monster to break free and attack them again. Nonetheless, he had the face of a child and as she crouched with the blade of the knife poised to ram into his back, she found it hard to muster the ruthlessness to stab him- spider though he may be.

And much to her relief she didn’t have to. She let out a small shriek when it began moving- what was it doing?- but when all it did was drop to the ground and then cower away she let out a heavy sigh and sprang off its back. Despite the fact that it had obviously surrendered, she kept her knife levelled at it in a white-knuckled, two-handed grip lest it be tricking them into relaxing. After a few seconds standing like this and wondering what to do, a sudden movement in the web to her right made her start and spin round with the knife. The sight of the unconscious Rhys made her lip curl in disdain; maybe she felt slightly sick and she was trembling, but she hadn’t fainted. Even if she had… Well, men were supposed to do the fighting, not women.

For now though, her thoughts on society had to be put on hold while she sorted out this mess.
“Right then, erm… Rhynna, give him that meat.” The dragon obligingly tossed it over, her thoughts suggesting that she might go the same way as Rhys. But for different reasons.
“You nearly killed him,” she said tremulously to her rider.
“It’s some sort of mutant hybrid monster!” Zhenya stared at her dragon with bewilderment, brow creased as she tried to understand her viewpoint. “It would hardly be a loss to the world!”
“He can’t help what he is. Besides… How do you know anything about him?” Rhynna was defensive, but at the next words the girl spat out she turned quiet and submissive.
“Does it seem intelligent? It’s just an animal. Be thankful I was merciful to it. Now just keep an eye on it while I deal with this.” The spider-thing hopefully occupied for the time being, she turned to their unconscious colleagues.

Much to her relief, Silence was stirring at this point, her mouth moving feebly.
“Um, I’m going to get everyone back to the circus. It’ll be okay,” she said weakly, staring at the wound as she knelt beside the younger girl.
“Zhenya? Um, should I carry them?” Rhynna asked tentatively after a few seconds of silence. Zhenya shook her head and gathered Silence up in her arms.
“Yeah, that’s probably best.” It wasn’t too hard to stand and carry the girl over to Rhynna’s back, not after so many hours spent doing acrobatics and having to hold her own weight sometimes with as little as a few fingertips. But after arranging Silence in a rough sitting position on the antler’s back and binding her there using some of the long, tough vines of ivy which grew so abundantly on the trees, she was faced with the issue of lifting the much heavier Rhys.
“I’m not sure I can pick him up on my own,” she admitted, staring down at his body. The dragon was still watching the spider-boy with the doe’s carcass, and she didn’t look up either as she suggested,
“Maybe he can help.”
“What? He won’t understand!”
“Well… Not words, no, but maybe if I ask him with my mind I will.” Zhenya flung her arms in the air before crossing them and watching the two expectantly. She wasn’t capable of any mental contact except in the channel which Rhynna had opened between them, but she could feel the dragon stretching out her mind to carefully skirt around the edges of the hybrid’s. She poured in a stream of thoughts, more made of images and sensations than of words, before carefully withdrawing and throwing a pointed look to Rhys hanging limply in the web. Suggestions of the boy picking up Rhys and carrying him over to Rhynna with Zhenya’s help were backed up with the potential reward of being fed and given shelter in the future.

When she looked back at her rider, however, the antler was met by a look of horror mingled with shock.
“We can’t bring him back to circus with us!” she exclaimed. This was met only by a slow shake of the head.
“He’d be perfect for it. Besides, we can’t leave him. I’m sure he was just hungry, think how hard this must be for him.” The dragon’s wide, pleading gaze eventually cracked Zhenya- she might not always be smiles and kindness to the dragon, but she did care about her and she knew from their mental contact how close she felt to all other life. If this thing really was evil, then she would’ve picked it up even from trying to reach it with her mind.

The Circus is a Family Empty
PostSubject: Re: The Circus is a Family   The Circus is a Family Icon_minitimeTue Apr 10, 2012 9:17 pm

Oh wow.

For some obscure reason, when he surrendered, they had given him FOOD. He was genuinely shocked and surprised and was glad that this was so much the opposite of being killed.

He went straight to work, starved as he was, to eat the doe. Funny thing, though, he really didn't have any natural resources TO eat it. In spite of his spindly legs, it didn't look like they were meant for tearing flesh (as much as he had threatened with them earlier) and his fingernails certainly weren't meant for it, either. His slightly pointy canines, although poison-inducing, were small and would probably be yanked out of his head instead of tearing at this thick flesh if he had tried it. It didn't look like he at things the way other spiders did, by melting thing's innards and drinking them; he was definitely a straight meat-eater. So, he grabbed a sharp nearby rock and began trying to cut the deer open vigorously. It was a pretty violent display, but it worked. As soon as the thick hide was cut, he messily began eating the raw meat inside. It clearly took a lot of effort for him to get that far. What I'm getting at is, whatever this creature was, it was not particularly evolved for it's own survival. It seemed like the human and spider-parts worked *against* each other rather than with each other. It was most assuredly not a thing of nature.

If Rhys had NOT been saved, he would have suffered the same bloody treatment as this doe had without a doubt. So, it was indeed a good thing he had been saved.

For a few minutes, Fredrick devoured the creature like the wild thing that he was (you know, blood going everywhere), then wiped his mouth on his arm for what little good it did to clean his face. Once he felt slightly less starved, he looked sheepishly up at the people who he had just attempted to victimize, looking like a kid who had just got caught with his hand in the cookie jar. He wasn't sure WHAT this feeling was that he was feeling, but he wanted to get rid of it. Guilt.

Then, he had an idea! Or at least, he THOUGHT it was his own idea. He could carry the human for them! Back to... somewhere! Maybe, maybe if he was helpful, he could get more food! Ridiculous as it was, it seemed very plausible. It didn't occur to him that the images in his mind may have come from somebody externally. Though, incidentally, as he was looking for a way to relieve this new-found bad-guilt-feeling he had, he seemed relieved for the possibility that this may work out for him.

Fredrick's mind was incredibly easy to navigate and very simple- mostly going on instincts, if Rhynna was just skirting around the edges of it. Though there was a kind of building tension or stress to it, like two massive tectonic plates vying to fill the same spot, or like a heavy anvil on a delicate glass surface. It was hard to pin down where it was coming from, or what the tension actually was, it was just... there.

He raised his hands up slowly, palms outward, to show he wasn't going to cause any more harm, and then easily plucked Rhys up with his spider legs and placed him gingerly on his back. He kept his head lowered as a sign of submission, to not raise any alarm in these people who had already bested him AND fed him. He wasn't going to leave the rest of the half-eaten carcass behind, though, so he bound up the rather disgusting chunks of meat and bone and got ready to drag that along, too. Then, with some various pointing at himself and at them and then at the distance, he tried indicating that he intended to follow them. See? Helpful!

Oh, and, also, as an aside, before going, he also reached into his web (still moving to not cause any panic in the humans) and unstuck a different small something from it. In the dark and in the rain, it was hard to tell at first but it in fact was the remains of a yellow rose. Only four or five petals hung on it still (It wasn't a wild rose), and it looked mostly withered, like it had been there a while. Actually, it may just have looked so yellow because of how dried the leaves were. It was hard to tell. But anyhow, after picking that up, THEN he seemed ready to go.
