Lets just see how this plays out, shall we?
Setting: Tarz; surrounded by plains on three sides, this is a big city. A river cuts through them to the east, winding along one edge of the city's walls. To the far north are many mountains, but they're a few days ride. It's early summer, with the evenings long and the temperature during the day just starting to pick up.

Start time: Late evening.

Let the romance commence! (8

Everything was perfect. Or at least, as near to perfect as it could get. The sun burned a deep red just on the horizon, throwing long threads of gold and amber across the sky. The mountains on the very edge of the horizon were backlit, their edges almost white against the darkening sky, their centres black like a bottomless pit. And of course, it was just warm enough to be out and enjoying the evening- but not too cold to offer a lady a coat.

It wasn’t only the weather on the brighter side of good, but the rest of the city too. The city wall was open for the evening to the public, allowing people to wander along its length and enjoy all the splendours of the plains that lay beyond its boundaries. Even with such privileges though, it was still relatively quiet, only the odd couple walking hand-in-hand here and there. Most of the families that had been around had left a while before, taking their children back for an evening meal and early bed.

The quiet suited some people just fine. Lutis was on his own, yet he wasn’t going to go out of his way to avoid a place just because most of the people using the walkway were in some way or another hooked up. Although, it did make him wish he had someone good to spend the evening with, even if it was just someone for the night. A bit of company (and a kiss, he was never one to turn down a kiss). That wasn’t going to happen though, not when he was the only single guy around… typical. Everything was turning up roses except for his mood, which was distinctly sour.

He sighed and paused by the wall, resting his elbows on the parapet and staring out at the view in front of him, not really seeing it properly. Thinking too much- it really wasn’t a good habit. Better to just plod on and take things as they wandered along and announced themselves. He wished something interesting would happen, even if it was trouble. At least it would fill up the hours.

Dawn (It's kinda basic for the moment): https://dragonscove.darkbb.com/t966-dawn-anderson-shapeshifter

Surprisingly enough, it was a rather nice day. Or, perhaps, not so surprising if it was what one was used to. But some people were more used to cold, overcast days where it would either ran, snow, or sleet relentlessly until night fell and the world was covered with darkness. A darkness that Dawn, for one, was not comfortable with.

Perhaps these were not the kinds of thoughts one should have while balancing on the edge of a wall, arms spread slightly to keep from falling to what would be certain death on one side and a nasty tumble on the other. Still, she was paying attention. Mostly. Better that than watching the happy couples go by her. Oh no, that sort of thing was not for her.

She had never managed to find a man that seemed to suit her, at least not in the long run, and as such she had remained single for most of her life. Oh sure, there had been a few trials here and there, but they all ended catastrophically one way or another. The last one, the one that had caused her to give up on men entirely, had involved her slightly dim witted suitor lying to her about joining the military.

So no, while Dawn needed the air, she really did not want to watch the couples stroll past, which was why she was focusing on the wall beneath her feet. Her simple white dress fluttered around her ankles and she was glad that she had chosen to wear her best pair of flat shoes for her walk. It was only then that she glanced up and noticed a man standing on his own not far down the wall, and the vague surprise she felt was enough to cause her to lose her balance and fall. Fortunately she fell towards the wall, and was, therefore, able to land safely on her feet. Still, she let out an involuntary shriek of terror that caused many couples around her to turn and glare, and her face to turn a delicate shade of pink. Of course.

Lutis decided to ignore the other people on the wall as he watched the sun slowly sink into the west, sickened by all the mushy romance crap couples always seemed to spew at each other. No doubt he also did it himself, but that wasn’t the point- it was disgusting to watch all the same. It was definitely better to just pay no attention.

So it was of little surprise he didn’t register the woman walking along the edge of the wall towards him until she fell off, her yelp cutting through the mushy atmosphere. He jerked away from the wall, worry flickering across his face as he hurried forwards to steady her, hoping she hadn’t hurt herself. The selfishness of the other people around- glares? Had they no interest in anyone other than themselves?

He caught at her arm as she found her feet again, making sure she wasn’t about to lose her balance more and –gods forbid- fall off the wall itself.
“Are you okay? What happened? Did I scare you… sorry if I did,” he said, tailing off and shrugging ruefully. Well, he thought to himself, I guess I’m not the only one on my own up here tonight. Or at least, hopefully… pretty girl, she’s probably got some boyfriend off doing something romantic for her…

Dawn looked up in surprise as she was steadied, not having expected any assistance, and certainly not from the man who had distracted her in the first place. Her cheeks turned a slightly darker shade of pink. Oh stop it, she chastised herself, you do not want to start anything. She brushed off her skirt and nodded slightly.
"Yes, thank you, I am quite well," she replied, looking up at the man and smiling slightly. Thankfully the others around them turned away and went back to their business. She had never done well under scrutiny, and this occasion was no different. They probably think we are a couple, she realized, looking around. Well, no reason to be rude, I might as well talk to him. "I am Dawn," she said, returning her gaze to him. "My apologies for bothering you. I was simply walking along and then I slipped." Shrugging slightly Dawn studied him while trying not to appear like she was doing so.

If she was being honest, she was almost sure there was someone coming to meet him. She figured she had to be the only person on the wall who did not. Still... No, she reminded herself, before she could even begin to wonder.

“Oh uh… good,” Lutis said, taking a step backwards and shoving his hands awkwardly in his pockets. What more could you say to that? Cursing his sudden lack in communication skills, he looked around at the others nearest to them, raising his eyebrows challengingly as they turned away again.

He gave her a genuine smile as she introduced herself. Dawn- pretty name. It suited her.
“Lutis. Nice ta meetcha,” he said, slipping into his familiar city drawl. Unless he was making a conscious effort to sound educated, it was as much a part of him as was anything else. “And it’s no bother, really. I wasn’t doing anything, just kinda… looking at the view.” He gestured vaguely beyond the wall, knowing it probably wasn’t doing him many favours. It was getting dark now anyway, so the extreme lightning on the few features of the landscape were starting to look less impressive than they had done a few minutes previous. His eyes hardly lingered on the view before they flicked back to Dawn, meeting her curious eyes. Oh, she was much too good to not be taken by another.

“Well, I’m probably keeping you from someone,” he said, taking another step backwards and dropping his eyes to the ground. “Have a good evening, might see ya around. Never know, things like that always seem to happen.” He gave her a friendly wink and turned, steadfastly ignoring the urge to turn around and stop to talk longer.

" Actually no," Dawn started, though she trailed off again quickly, watching him turn away with a vaguely hurt expression. Well, that answers your question, she thought with a sigh. At least someone in this city cares whether or not you break your neck. Not that he sticks around. Of course, she could understand his response. It was all couples on the wall, with no other single people in sight, the logical conclusion to make was that someone was waiting for her. She had, after all, made the same assumption about him.

"You know, you do not have to run off," she braved, glancing over at Lutis. That is an interesting name, she thought. Certainly not one I have ever heard before. "Unless, of course, you have someone waiting for you?" It was more of a challenge than a question, and not one she generally dared to make, however she did not want him to disappear, though she was not quite certain of her reasoning yet.

“You’re not?” As Dawn spoke briefly Lutis paused, turning back to her again. “I would have thought…” he stopped, not wanting to embarrass her with the following a pretty girl like you would have had someone. No, that wasn’t a good way to go. He cleared his throat awkwardly, feeling like an idiot. Ah, what a way to make a fool of himself on his first impression. Although, surprisingly, it seemed as though he hadn’t offended her. At least, not enough for her to just let him leave.

“Me? No, no there’s noone I was meeting,” he said quickly, stepped back up towards her again. “It seems we’ve found the one other person up here that’s not waiting or with someone else.” He had to smile at that- what a strange but pleasant coincidence. Well, if that really was the case, then everything pointed to at least spending a little while longer with Dawn. “And that, to me, says that we should probably spend a little more time together. What says you?”

Dawn considered his words, wondering what she should do. She was interested in the man, but considering her luck with relationships she was not sure if it was a good idea. Still, what could be the harm in spending a little time with him? "I can understand your confusion," she replied with a soft smile. "I thought the same thing after all. No need to make him feel guilty she thought.

But really, what were the chances of them running into each other? Of all the people on the wall, she happened to spot the only one who was single? Dawn was not really one to believe in fate but still! This seemed like a perfect example of it. "I say you are quite right," she agreed, her smile widening.

Lutis cracked a smile at Dawn's remark, wondering if she had been thinking the same thing. "Well then," he said, holding out one arm with a lighthearted smirk for her to loop her own arm through, "I say we take this thing to the whole measure and pretend like we know each other already. As everyone else here seems to know each other so well." He gestured slightly towards the nearest couple to them, the two too wrapped up in themselves to take any notice of anything else going on around them.

"You should definitely tell me a little more about yourself, so this is more effective," he said with a wink, grinning. "Otherwise it's not as good, you know?"

Dawn nodded slightly in agreement, a gentle smile crossing her face as she slipped her arm through his. "I agree," she said, following his motion and flushing slightly. Well, maybe she was not ready to do that yet, but he seemed to be nice enough to spend some time with. At least he had helped her instead of ignoring her like everyone else had. It took her a moment to register his question and another to find an answer for him.

"Well you already know my name," she replied, considering her words. "I am twenty-three years old, and I came here to visit the city. Most of the time I roam the countryside, looking for a place to call my own." She decided not to mention how long she had been doing so. "What about you? And what else would you like to know?"

“Heh, you’re a year younger than me then,” Lutis said. “Twenty-four, lived in cities like this one all my life and never wanted anything else,” he winked, looking out across the city on the inside of the wall where the streets were dimly lit here and there by lamps hung on the outside walls of the buildings that clustered together. “This one’s pretty standard, nothing much of interest to be said really. Apart from rather nice sunsets and rather pretty girls falling off the city wall.” He shot her a mischievous grin. They were nearly at one of the guardhouses that speckled the wall every now and then, where to get to the next part of the wall you had to walk through the middle of it. You could also get down to the ground from them too, down the spiral staircase that ran down the middle of the building. The door was closed and he pushed it open, beckoning for Dawn to go first.

A sudden kafuffle erupted from inside the guardhouse as the door opened, arrows exploding through the gap as someone leapt through the new space, a dark cloak flapping around the person as they rolled through it and slammed the door shut behind them. They pressed their back against the wood, wincing as more arrows thudded into the door. Dressed all in black, it was obvious they didn’t have any good planned- if the angry guards didn’t suggest that already. The person gave the pair a manic grin, pushing off the door and running down the wall with a path as irregular as a mad march hare.
“Hiya Lutis!” the person shouted behind them, vaulting onto the nearest building to the left as guards burst through the now open door.

Dawn had fortunately not moved yet when the man burst through the door, though it did surprise her considerably. She raised an eyebrow at the arrows that shot past her, one skimming so close it made her hair flutter in the wind it created. She turned her interested look on Lutis as the man called out to them, a faint smile flickering at the corners of her mouth. "While I do appreciate your compliment I must ask who that was and how they know you," she said softly so as not to attract the attention of the guards.

While it did not really matter all that much to her she wanted to know, partially because she was not certain if she wanted to get involved with a criminal. Of course, just because the person that had gone by them seemed less than honest that did not mean Lutis was. This Dawn knew full well, but she wanted to make sure. "And what exactly is going on here?" she added as an afterthought.

Lutis pulled Dawn to one side as the guards burst onto the battlements, already fanning out along its length to try and see where the man that had made a quick escape onto the rooftops had gone. A couple of those guards who had been at the front of the group were starting to shoot suspicious looks at Dawn and Lutis, and he decided it was probably time to get out of there.
“Uhm well… probably nowhere good, shall we keep going before they decide that I’m in league with whoever that was that just ran for it?” He tried a smile on Dawn, hoping she would take his thinly veiled instruction and they could escape the wall too. “I think it was Raroo…” he muttered to himself, looking across in the direction that the man had disappeared again.

He sighed as Dawn asked what was going on, shooting the nearest guards another cautious look. Yes, they were definitely starting to attract unwanted attention now. A couple stepped forwards, hands on their weapons as it started to click that something connected Lutis with the thief that had just run past. It was time to take desperate measures. He suddenly pulled her close, tipping her chin up with one hand and laying a kiss on her lips before she could protest. He shot a quick glance at the guards, then pulled away and shrugged.
“Can I explain later?” he asked, then tugged her towards the staircase at a run.

Dawn looked around warily as guards surrounded them, knowing that something bad was about to happen. She really did not like crowds, especially armed ones, and this was no exception. She took a step closer to Lutis, holding onto his sleeve nervously. "You think?" she asked quietly, rather distracted by the approaching guards. "I agree, we should probably go."

Because she was not completely paying attention to him his kiss caught her entirely by surprise. She gasped at first but then relaxed, reminding herself to just go with the flow. "I believe you can explain later," she agreed softly, letting him pull her along. She could actually keep up rather well, despite her thoughts being scattered. The guards were drawing their weapons, which did not leave her any real choice in the matter.

Okay, she thought, forcing herself to concentrate. Where can we go to get away from them? "The marketplace," she said suddenly. "Maybe we can lose them there." She certainly hoped so anyway. Spending the night in jail, or possibly nights for that matter, did not sound like a good idea to her.

Lutis grinned as Dawn let him lead her along, shoving the door shut behind them before running down the staircase, her hand still wrapped tightly in his own.
“Oh good, because its kind of a long story, and I’m not sure the extra ears would like hearing it,” he said, nearly missing a step on one of the more worn parts of the staircase. There was a shout from behind them, but he didn’t stop.

“Good idea. You’re taking this a lot better than I would have thought someone would,” he commented as they reached the bottom of the staircase, running right through the middle of even more guards gathered there. One even stepped aside to let them pass, unknowing that they too were now being pursued. The streets were even quieter than the wall had been- well, it wasn’t exactly quiet with all the guards now- and they had no trouble running through the streets. It was so quiet two running people were very out of place, and Lutis soon slowed them to a walk- they could always hide if they were still being pursued.

Dawn glanced back at the shout but she did not stay that way for long, needing to watch where she was going. "Well I have all the time in the world," she replied, thankful as they cleared the wall and the guards allowed them to pass.

Still, they were not safe yet. Not until they were sure the guards had abandoned their chase. "I hardly have any choice," Dawn commented, settling into an easy walk beside Lutis. Strangely enough she was actually enjoying herself. It was the most excitement she had had in ages and it was quite fun. "But I must say, it is not every day that I fall off of walls into the arms of a rather handsome man and then am forced to run from armed guards." She smiled and laughed quietly at the thought. "Hopefully they will leave us alone," she added, glancing back slightly over her shoulder while pretending to be studying the buildings around them.

“Mm well… you could throw a hissy fit,” said Lutis, agreeing that Dawn hadn’t had much choice in coming with him on their new adventure. “Not that I want you to do that, of course,” he added hastily at the end. The rather nice night really didn’t need making less nice by a hissy fit.

He smiled at her following words. “Well, I would want to say the same thing about youself- I can on that aspect- but as for being chased by guards, well… I have some interesting acquaintances.” Least of who was the thief who had managed to get the pair of them into trouble back on the wall- next time he saw him, Lutis would definitely be getting his own back some way or another. “They should leave us alone for a bit, it’s not as though they were after us in the first place.”

By now they had come to the markets that Dawn had suggested as a place for them to head towards- by night it was a completely different place to what it was at the day, stalls all locked up shut with their goods hidden by tarps, wooden shutters and the like, the ground swept clean of all the rubbish that managed to accumulate on it every day. A cat sat on the doorstep of one of the houses that ringed the main market square (if it could be called that, it was rather more oval than square, houses squished round in strange shapes to fit in as many to the city as they could be fit), casually washing its ears with one paw.
“Well, here we are,” said Lutis, turning to Dawn properly. His eyes flicked behind them briefly, making sure there weren’t any guards left in sight. Nope, everything was quiet- for now.

"Well I can assure you that I have not, nor will I ever, throw a hissy fit," Dawn said calmly. "I fail to see the point in them. All the do is make one look like a raving lunatic." Which was the last thing Dawn needed to look like. No, she could be unstable enough as it was, though she took care not to show it.

"I believe interesting is a mild way of putting it," she commented with a smile. She certainly did not have any friends who made it a point to get in trouble with the law. But then, she did not have any friends at all really. There were people she had met of course, but none of them had shown any inclination to stick around. "True, they only thought we might have something to do with it. No thanks to your friend. But still we should probably be careful."

Dawn scanned the area, surprised to realize that it was later than she had thought and the crowds were gone. Well, she thought, my idea still worked a little bit. It got us away from the wall. But now there was no one else around, or so it seemed at first glance, and she was unsure as to what she should do. Okay, go with the flow, she told herself. After all, it was that idea that had caused her to run into Lutis in the first place. "You certainly know how to make things interesting," she commented, looking up at him slightly shyly. "I must say this has turned into quite the exciting evening, hardly what I expected when I came out here." Pausing for a moment to consider him she braved the question, "What should we do now?"

Lutis smiled lopsidedly at her words, meeting her uncertain look upwards at him. “Well, I do try,” he said, his words bright with laughter. True, he hadn’t caused all of the strange adventurous things that had been happening- in fact, had any of the things that had happened to them actually been his fault by action?- but he took the compliment anyway. It wasn’t something that needed worrying over.

“Now?” He tapped one finger to his lips. The obvious answer, you should definitely come back to my place probably wouldn’t sit well with Dawn, so he restrained himself- just about- from saying it. Instead, his smile widened.
“I wouldn’t want to spoil your nice exiting evening with some monotonous ending, now would I? I say we go out with a real bang, I can show you some really interesting places. The best place to hide from guards, after all, is through the thieves’ network.” His grin turned challenging, pushing the woman to agree with his new idea. “Unless you just wanted to head home, of course?”

She smiled, pleased by the amusement in his voice. Dawn had never met a man like Lutis, which was probably due to the fact that she did not meet many people in general more than anything else. A little adventure, a little excitement... that was what she had wanted to draw herself out of her shell. And now she was getting that chance. Even if she never saw him again, which she hoped would not be the case but knew was a definite possibility, at least she would know that she had not driven him away with her shyness, as so many other people had been.

Hmm, the thieves' network? Well, Dawn thought, I did want to get out more often, however much this might sound like a bad idea. Vaguely surprised to realize that she already trusted him the woman nodded and smiled bravely. "Sounds like a plan to me," she agreed, wondering what he had been about to say. Doubtless she did not want to know, which was fine in her mind. At least he knew what not to say, even though he might think it. That was something she could respect. "No... home seems so boring now," she added, meeting his grin with a smile of her own. "I would much rather have some fun."

“Oh good,” said Lutis as Dawn agreed to his suggestion of the thieves’ network. “It’s much more interesting when there’s someone else around you know. You get some very strange people around.” He rubbed at the back of his head. “Not too weird though- we’ll stick to the cleaner parts of the network. Otherwise those bits won’t look half as good if we just head for the really crazy parts.”

He looked around the marketplace, working out exactly where the closest entrance to the network actually was, before guiding Dawn over to another smaller street. The shops that lined the road were mostly closed down for the night, cleanly polished signs showing how they were normally open during the day- apart from one shop front, which had a distinctly rundown, abandoned feel to it. There were also a couple of open taverns the other end of the street, but Lutis didn’t head for those, walking towards the strange empty shop front instead. He rapped a little tune on the wood of the boarded up door, counting the seconds under his breath before there was a similar knock the other side.
“That means all the traps on this door are disabled now,” he explained as he pushed it open, nodding to the young boy who sat on guard duty just inside the “shop”. “Got an extra guest with me tonight, I’ll make sure she doesn’t get into trouble.”

He led Dawn into the shop, which was a lot more impressive than what it looked like from outside. It had been stripped out into a bigger space, long corridors running to the left and right behind the shops that were next to the one they had entered through, and stairs leading up to the top floor. There were a few people around, but it was by no means busy- yet.
“Which way takes your fancy?” Lutis asked.

Dawn refrained from commenting that if he was not with her she would have been terrified by the prospect of entering the thieves' network. Actually, even with him beside her, the thought still made her slightly nervous. But she trusted him, believing that he knew what he was doing and that he would take care of her. "I was not aware that there are different levels of crazy," she commented with a slight smile. The idea interested her slightly.

She followed him as they left the marketplace, though shops still lined the streets. For whatever reason she had expected the entrance to be in a more run down part of town, not right in the middle of the shops. However, once Lutis headed up to an abandoned shop front she realized that her guess had not been completely wrong. After all, something had to make it stand out, right?

A crash from one of the taverns down the street distracted her for a moment, and she looked in that direction with wide eyes before hearing Lutis speak and focusing on him again. "Well it would be bad if they were not," she commented, wondering just what kind of traps they were. No doubt they could be quite lethal, and Dawn really did not feel like testing them to find out. No, save that for another day, or better yet, never. The woman nodded slightly at the boy, wondering if he was an orphan or something like that. Unless of course the thieves used their own children as guards, which made her wonder. "I do not think I will be getting into much trouble anyway," she added softly with a slight smile. "Or at least, I hope not."

With that being said she looked around the inside of the shop in awe, wondering how the long corridors fit into the buildings without being noticed. Surely someone had wondered why the dimensions of the shops did not seem quite right? Or maybe no one cared. Yes, that seemed more likely than anything else. After all, no one had cared when she fell off of the wall. Well, almost no one. "Right I think," she responded uncertainly, not having any idea where the corridors led.

The boy that was guarding the door to the network jumped up off his stall as soon as Lutis and Dawn were inside the building, immediately setting about putting all the traps back to their original places, until the next person came along and wanted to get into the building. Some of them really weren’t nice- Lutis quickly pulled Dawn away from the doorway, not wanting to scare her with the nasty things the boy was handling. Poison daggers and acid sprays weren’t really tools for the lighthearted.

The woman seemed pretty taken aback by the thieves’ network- Lutis assumed he probably would have been too, if he hadn’t been so used to similar, sometimes larger, networks in the other cities he had been to.
“Good choice, right it is,” he said, checking up and down the corridors before they set off down it. It was quite thin, but well kept- the path from the shop they had entered through was well used. The corridor led down, winding between the other shops that- supposedly- lay to its left and right, into the basements (there was a larger room here, much busier on account of the alcohol being served- Lutis hurried the pair of them through, not wanting to be accosted by drunkards), then finally opened out onto the main network.

More tunnels led in every direction, some wide enough to run a cart through, others only just big enough for a child to wriggle through. People wandered this way and that, some unspoken truce between the people keeping them from pickpocketing or attacking one another- although the latter did occasionally happen. A few people were selling goods, but most of the business that went on underground was held in little chambers that had been blasted out of the walls many years previously, when the network had first been set up.
“Tada,” said Lutis quietly, guiding Dawn over to one wall so they weren’t in the way of anyone behind them. The best way to keep safe in the network was to stay inconspicuous.

Dawn let Lutis lead her down the hall, trusting him not to get her lost. After all, he was the thief and she was not. Or at least, she thought he was. Who else would know their way around the network, or even be allowed in?

She smiled gratefully at her praise, thankful that she had made the right choice. Or perhaps guess would have been a better word. Either way she had been correct. She looked around warily as they passed through the underground tavern of sorts, outwardly defying anyone to mess with her though inside she quailed at the thought of having to confront anyone. Better to run and hide in her book, especially since she was mostly useless at protecting herself. That was the reason why Taya was so protective of her, though the Antler dragon was nowhere nearby now. So for now she would trust Lutis. Wait until Taya hears about this though, she thought, her lips twitching in a hidden smile.

"Wow," she said quietly, surreptitiously looking around. Obviously it was not a good idea to appear to be gawking, and she did not want to come across that way anyway. Still, it was rather impressive that all of this had been built into and underneath the city. Obviously the thieves were good at hiding themselves, which was entirely the point she knew. "Come here often?" she murmured, turning her demure blue gaze on him again.

“It’s good, eh?” said Lutis as Dawn looked around, folding his arms and leaning back against the wall behind him. He wasn’t as relaxed as he looked- it always paid off to be vigilant around other thieves, even in a neutral zone like the network. Dawn seemed to have the right idea too, shuffling quietly out of the way of the others that moved through the tunnels without any complaint. She was definitely quite the girl- Lutis knew enough who would be wailing in horror by now, but Dawn was just taking it all in her stride.

It was quite difficult for Lutis to choose where the pair of them should go next, so he just waited until Dawn spotted something that caught her attention. There was always something quite interesting going on- no doubt they would fall across adventure soon enough!
“Yeah, I come down here quite a lot,” he said. “More lately, but only because things have been a bit thin-“ he cut himself off before he finished his sentence, thinking it probably wouldn’t be the best thing to be telling a girl he had hardly met an hour or two before that work was thin on the ground. “Because I’ve been catching up with some friends,” he amended. “Ermm… where do you fancy going next?”
